“A monumental water mill in Kyparissia - Peloponnese”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2013

Preservation of history, local tradition and monuments support communities’ intermolecular strengths and bring people together in hard times. This is the case of Kyparissia reconditioned water mill, visit able since early this summer. Technically speaking, a watermill utilizes waterfall power (mass of water/time unit and height of water fall) to turn a heavy milling stone squeezing wheat grains below and produce flour. This old methodology usable till sometime within last century, is available for you to see still in action in this mill! To reach the mill you need 5 minutes driving from Kyparissia to the small community of Myloi (meaning mills, as in this area their main occupation used to be olive oil processing and flour milling). Adequately road signs indicate the way on both directions near the north entry to Kyparissia. The mill actually produces flour during weekend time (best timing to visit). The rennovation is absolutely perfect both esthetically and technically. Detailed explanation of how the mill works and references of background history are happily offered by the mill’s crew on the spot. I wish to underline the educational value of this latter gesture as it definitely represents an added value to knowledge buildup of younger generations visiting the place. Behind the mill, the owners have created a sitting café area where you can have a variety of drinks (infusions, beer or local strong alcohol). My personal suggestion is to try miller’s mature tsipouro alcohol as it is unique. The go-together dishes with tsipouro are home-made and simply fantastic. The old watermill of Kyparissia is a very positive historical and recreation core-unit in this area. Do not forget to ask for the special pamphlet which provides additional historical details and information.
