“hippie caves”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2013

If your a bit of a free spirit your self its realy easy to see the charm theese caves must have had back in the 70´s. The climbing was verry good in the sense you could see the lowest row witout any climbing and the higest was already almoast real climbing.

“interesrting and fun”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2013

There is a fee to enter the caves of 3 euros. Good fun clambering around looking into all the caves. However you would need to be reasonably mobile to take advantage of this site as it is abit of a clamber.

“It was a very short visit, so the review may be not 100% accurate”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2013

We visited the Matala Roman caves for less than 2 hours, so we were not able to fully explore them.
For a person that likes history and ancient places the caves are fascinating. You can go for hours there trying to find and interesting engraving or picture or piece of clay pots.
Unfortunately, you can see that the place is not guarded and had been visited by uncivilized people. Bottles, cans, cigarette buts and all kind of garbage you can imagine (to include several condoms). Most of the caves smell like public toilet and even they have interesting thinks to see you can not stay long time there.
After I go there for a longer stay I will come back with more detailed review.

Oh, I almost forgot - Even some people below say there is no fee, actually there is. 3 euro for adults, 2 euro for students and people 65+ years and it is free of charge for people under 18.

“Worth a look”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 26, 2013

Fairly interesting and worth a look around if you are in Matala. There is no fee to enter and it only takes a few minutes to clamber around and look inside. Unfortunately some stank of urine had some litter in, but others were clean and good to enter – check inside before you climb in!

“Romans, schmomans: climb!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2012

Nice way to break the sunbathing on Matala beach, but if you are a boulderer or free climber, bring your shoes. Lots of fun to be had, but watch for the sandstone. When you get to the top head west and you will find a vast flat of sedimentary rock full of huge fossilised shells.
