“Beautiful setting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2012

The beach is made of grey sand and pebbles, in a big cove between the two headlands, very pretty, with perfect sunsets. Nice level of tourism at the beach, not too much but enough to have a vibe.

“Matala beach..... with views”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2012

Average beach for Southern Crete, but can get very busy. Great views of the caves and surrounding bay. Plenty of sun beds and umbrellas available at €2 per sunbed, per umbrella, so 2x sunbeds and 1 umbrella for a whole day is only €6. (at time of review, only £4.20). lots of tavernas and cafes line the beach, Would recommend Dolphin. (see my review for Dolphin)

“Sheltered, right in town”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2012

This town of Matala is right on thiis beach, at least the southern half. It is not very big and the main part gets crowded. Usual umbrellas and cars for rent. Near a big parking lot (middle) and a campground (north end). At the north end is a high cliff with the Roman caves, said to be a burial ground but more famous as a hippy hangout in the '60's. While officially "closed" after 5pm, the fence has many obvious holes :-)

The cliff shelters the bay from the wind; if you want surf, go to the beaches north of Matala. While the beach above water is sandy, there are pebbles at the water's edge and rock ledges and stones in the water. Nice for swimming. There are restaurants right at the beach's edge on the southern third, and thirty metres further is the main part of town, with all sorts of stores and amenities. As most such beaches in populated areas of Crete, not topless.

“Beautiful but busy”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 24, 2012

The town of hippies that used to be Matala is now full of tourists on the beach. In fact, when I went, there were no free parasols left on the beach! The caves are beautiful from a distance but you do see some rubbish that people have left behind, which is a shame. (Contrary to some reviews, the visiting of the caves is completely free. The only restriction is that you cannot go there after 5pm.) The beach itself is beautiful but for me, it was too busy. There is a another beach nearby called the Red beach, which the guidebook said was quieter, but you have to climb a rocky path to get there and unfortunately, we did not have enough time to get there (there's a page for this on TripAdvisor too); definitely would recommend a real pair of shoes for this walk though, not flip-flops. I really did enjoy the view in Matala though.

I visited Matala as part of a bus tour, which went from Rethymno to Moni Arkadi, Phaestos, Matala, and Spili, ran by Klados travel (http://www.kladostravel.gr). I think it was a great tour and would recommend it to anyone who wants excursions from Rethymno. They pick you up on the bus from your hotel and if you stay by their office in Aderelianos Campos, they give you a 6 euro discount! Much cheaper than renting a car, especially for a couple, and the roads on the island aren't the easiest/safest to drive...

“Beautiful and quiet town beach”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2012

This is the main town beach by the famous caves where the likes of Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and Joni Mitchell used in the late 60s.

Wonderful blue waters and amazing sunsets
