This is an honest review from OUR family, some may agree some may not, however if you do go have a fab holiday, because we did!!!!!!! xxx
We traveled in August 2012 family of 4. We booked 2 rooms as our children are 12 (M) and 17 (F), when we first arrived we was a little surprised with the size of the pool :( as I have a normal 12 year old boy who likes to dive and jump and bomb occassionaly.... whooopppss someones gonna get wet!!!
The sunbeds are supa close maybe18 inches away from the pool MAX!! This was quite hard to explain that my son had to just get in the water and not splash at all and after a few splashes and appologies actually most of the other guests were understanding of that fact thankfully, or I would have spent the whole 2 weeks screaming at them to get out. Although we were out most of the time just early morning and late afternoon really after the beach, which is DIRE at Polychrono, in fact I would say FILTH, get a bus out to other beaches Christina will tell you where are best, and they are lovely elsewhere and less crowded...
The rooms were amazing, really they were, very clean and spacious, our room was slightly smaller than the kids but we had 2 balconies which was excellent as we didnt need air con cos we had a an excellent breeze.
Cooking facitilies were limited yes, but we managed to cook on what we had for a family of 4 although I must say workspace was an issue, but then the rooms are for 2, not 4 almost adults so I suppose ample space considering. We ate in quite a lot as to be honest we found the restaurants to be medioca really..the best one was the boutique hotel (Christina will know the name) was simply divine ...although around 90 euros for the 4 of us which I didnt mind payin as crap parrot and crap garden (in our opinion) were somewhere around the 60 euro mark anyway and as I said crap, I mean very basic no flavour.
Gyros not badly prices tho and without the chips are quite tasty for a cheapo snack!!! Oh and Georges restaurant we found on our last night was also very nice and cheap.
THE HILL.... I feel I must comment as maybe people will be put off because of this and this is the truth!!!!!!!! Yes it is a bit steep but walkin slowly takes all of about 20-30 seconds to walk up and if anyone reading this, that have been before will have to agree, please just be honest!! Its not as much an issue as some are saying.
Christina and staff, Christina was just adorable every morning smile and warm warm welcome (always remembered our names as we all strolled in together she would say good morning ... good morning ... good morning .... and good morning...., good morning guys im sure would have been easier but no always used our names, lovely) in fact I didnt sleep to well whilst there (due to a dog barking mainly, about 1/2 mile away not hotels fault, but I was tempted to shoot the bloody thing, had I had a gun LOL!!! and sorry if this has offended any dog lovers, I to have 3 dogs, but you try spending 2 weeks with about 4 hours disturbed on and off sleep a night...bloody thing) she always managed to put a smile on my weary face, Thank you for that Christina xx
The staff, George shots NO!!!! lol, there good but boy oh boy there lethal so be warned, although his a supa chap and soooo helpful.
The cleaner did a wonderful job and sunday was the only day she didnt clean, fresh towels if we left old/dirty in the shower etc... and not that we left washing up but if we'd have left our tea cups in bowl and rushed out she would have washed them up every time, bless her xxxx
Food was limited in the hotel as others have suggested, toasties and salad but must say good toasties and salad, drinks were cheap (the cheapest around thats why our bar was maybe always busy, and of course the fab company) and the BBQ do it!!! its great value and loads of food help yourself style buffet so why some people have left comments about the portions im really not sure??
The shower yes was a disaster, leeky curtain etc and yes the floor got drenched and could be a tad bigger, the bathroom in general actually but thats my only tiny little gripe with the place, and the pool of course.
So to sum up, shower and pool area was the only let down and not so much a let down but the rest of Ammos is so good they do let it down, stars if not for what i have mentioned I would rate this at least a four!!!!
Would we return? No is the answer, if the Ammos was somewhere else we would be booked up already (even with the pool and shower issues as the rest really does overcomponsate these small issues) but to be honest we hated Polychrono, the beaches were filthy, fag-ends everywhere, empty littered coffee cups everywhere, soiled nappies, cloudy water, kids running around naked in the sea and mums washing kids bums in the water etc, there are LOTS and LOTS of eastern Europeans there (not that I mind them) but we were the only english speakers on the beach at anytime we were there, sorry we did hear 1 couple speaking English ONCE in 2 weeks.
Aperantly there are now only 2 hotels that cater for us Brits, all the others cater for EU residents and offer SUPA cheap deals 40 euros for a 2 week stay (so I was told) and the europeans snap these up (which I would at these prices), its only a 260 k drive (max 4hrs) for them, so no wonder.
Bars are empty as someone had suggested before (again due to the cafe culture in the EU, I suspect) most Greeks we spoke to agreed the eastern Europeans have killed the area and dont spent any money either as they drive and bring everything with them inc alcohol!!!! This is evident on the beach as they all have picnics they just buy coffees. So thank you but no thank you im affraid that was our only visit to Halkidiki.
Turkey for our cheapo short haul for us from now on, maybe see you ther xxxx
