“Great experience: living in an authentic chateau and hosted by royalty!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 22, 2012

We spent 3 nights at Chateau La Barre in June 2012 and loved it! At first sight, the chateau feels more like a huge villa than a typical chateau, but once you get in, you can transport yourself to 1800s and even before.
Comte Guy and Comtess Marnie personally receive, host and even serve you! Guy's family has owned the chateau for centuries, so everything there is authentic and original: from furniture and cutlery to china.
They are also great guides, with off-the-beaten path recommendations on what to do in the Loire Valley. I strongly recommend to follow their suggestions.
We had dinner at the chateau once, with Guy and Marnie and other guests sharing a big dinning room table. Very good food, with good wine and interesting stories about everything.
The chateau grounds are good for a short stroll and having tea, but you need to plan for activities outside if you are planning to spend more than a day there.
Price isn't cheap, although it feels reasonable considering the uniqueness of the experience and the personalized service that you get.
We strongly recommend going there!

My wife and I celebrated our 30th anniversary at Chateau de la Barre by staying there for 2 days, and thorougly enjoyed our time there. We felt totally indulged, and found our hosts (Marnie and Guy) to be fascinating and accomodating - Marnie had to drive out at night to "rescue" us as we found ourselves lost on return from a restaurant in the region. The accomodations are truly unlike any other we've had - a trip back 600 years to a level of elegance that simply does not exist anymore. We stayed in the Suite de Marin Vanssay and cannot imagine a more comfortable and elegant room. The chateau is steeped in history, and Guy does a wonderful job in setting social and political context as he relates the story of his family's residence there.

We would most highly recommend this to anyone looking to stay in the area. You do need to have a car to take advantage of the many extraordinary regional sights, but Marnie does a wonderful job of recommending itinerary, and arranging excellent dining reservations (although the meal we had with the Vanssays at the chateau was immensely enjoyable).

Exploring France’s château-filled Loire Valley, is a particular delight. But staying in one of the aristocratic castles is the ultimate thrill. We lived out our fantasy recently at Château de La Barre, which has belonged to the same family for over 600 years. The current owners Comte and Comtesse de Vanssay offer a few choice rooms and a small cottage on their 100-acre estate, which also includes a family chapel and 16th Century fortifications.

Priceless family heirlooms furnish and decorate the château as well as the guest rooms -- think Limoges Hermes tea cups, precious Louis 14th antiques, an 18th Century Aubusson tapestry, designer fabrics (ours was traditional mustard yellow toile de Jouy and the neighbouring room ornate Venitan Rubelli silk brocade) embroidered linnens, and much more...  the rooms overlook a pond and gardens. Tea service or a glass of wine in the gardens is also encouraged!

The highlight of our stay at Château de La Barre was a Grand Siècle Dinner, which included a champagne and wine flight along with a five-course dinner that featured cheese, produce, veal -- the best morel mushrooms we’ve ever tasted -- and apple schnapps, all produced on the property. The family silver and crystal, which come with fascinating historical side notes, added to the festivities.

But beyond the beauty of the estate and the great food, is the incredible attention Marnie and Guy de Vanssay lavish on their guests. The two work tirelessly to provide detailed itineraries perfectly fitted to each guest’s interest. In our case, they arranged for us to tour the Valley’s principal châteaus and cathedrals, along with wine caves. Marnie and Guy also use their considerable connections to book prized reservations in local restaurants. We’re confident that, thanks to their insight and care, we saw the best of Loire and made the utmost of our time, all the while enjoying a real home at Château de La Barre.

My husband and I stayed here for three nights and let me tell you, it was a fabulous experience. Chateau de la Barre is rich in history and elegance. I felt like we were staying in a ‘hotel museum’ where I could actually touch the artifacts, but very gently, of course! When I showed pictures of our bedroom to friends they exclaimed: “This was your bedroom???” Would I stay here again? As fast as you can say pain au chocolat, which by the way, were served each morning and were ‘formidable!’

Room Tip: Ask for the enourmous blue one. :)

This was my second visit to Chateau de la Barre. My family stayed four days at the Chateau in 2009 while were in the area for a family reunion. We so enjoyed our stay here I wanted to return to share the experience with a long time friend. We both enjoyed the hospitality offered by Marnie and Guy. Guy met us at the train station in LeMans helped us get our rental car and programmed the GPS so we could find our way "home" for the next few days. We enjoyed the buffet supper with delicious salads, regional specialties, cheese, wine and dessert our first night. Marnie made sure we had fun itineraries for each day. We saw a charming area of France that we would have overlooked with out her expertise. She made reservations for three delightful meals and excellent suggestions for others. The breakfast is plentiful and beautifully presented. The rooms are beautiful and well appointed. The only bad part is eventually you have to leave. I certainly hope to return again and again.

Guy and Marnie are very gracious hosts. We spent two evenings. Dinner in the dining room with Guy and Marnie was a highlight of our 37 day Tour de France. Wonderful food, wine and conversation with a diverse and interesting group all staying at the hotel. Both Marnie and Guy offered very good advice for day trips. Love the parrot but our favourite is the gentlemanly foxed hair terrier Poom. Be sure to try Guy's chateau distilled Calvados.

Room Tip: Not a bad room in the castle

A luxurious French Chateau, beautifully decorated in 100acres of farm land. However, what makes the Chateau de la Barre unique is the fact that you really feel you are a guest in a private home. Marnie and Guy do everything to ensure that you are part of the 'house party'. Do attend a 'grand siècle dinner' if you can - dinner in the beautiful dining room, using family silver, with a really interesting group of people.
Breakfast in family room, relaxed and Marnie makes excellent scrambled eggs!
The care that the hosts take to make sure you see the best of the local area, providing maps and suggestions of places to visit help you to really explore the locality.
We will go back.
