I am not sure why the previous reviewer despised this hotel so much. My family has traveled around the world and stayed in many types of accommodations. When we book a hotel for $120 a night, we do not expect luxury, we expect basic amenities.
Casa Romantica is a beautiful little spot perfectly situated a short walk from the one of the most gorgeous beaches I have ever encountered. My husband and two boys booked adjacent rooms (9 &10) with a shared patio graced with wooden rocking chairs and a handy drying rack. The rooms are very basic, tile floors, beds were large and the sheets were perfectly acceptable. With the air conditioner at a comfortable temp, we all slept soundly every night. The bathroom is spacious and clean, though the shower water pressure was laughable. Somehow this did not bother any of us too much. If you are a stickler for a strong shower head, be forewarned.
Otherwise, the grounds are private and lush, the pool is nice and shaded, and the breakfast is just fine, fresh fruit, eggs, french toast, and homemade bread with jam. We ate dinner here two nights and the experience was lovely, food delicious. Get the lobster if they have it, divine.
The staff, particularly Mary Lou, is wonderful, very sweet and welcoming. There is an honor system refrigerator stocked with water, sodas, and ice cold beer. We loved this amenity.
Overall, this was a perfectly comfortable and welcoming place to stay. We ended up staying here 5 nights and moving to Harmony Hotel for the last three nights, triple the price and definitely more luxurious. Yet we all agreed that our stay at Casa Romantica felt more authentic, we engaged with the guests, shared recommendations, tried out our Spanish with the staff, and made ourselves at home. Am authentic Costa Rican experience.
Oh, and did I mention the incredible beach steps away where you can take your morning and afternoon swims? Paradise.
