“wow! But they shouldn't change the name”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 25, 2014 NEW via mobile

Food and service were great. Went on Christmas Eve and had the most incredible ceviche and tuna tartare. Ceviche had a nice bit of kick at the end, as it was in a light coconut milk sauce with red pepper. The tuna steaks were great, but mine had avocado sauce over it and was too much sauce. My wife had the dorado with lemon and wine and it was terrific!

Hope they decide to not change the name to pacifico Azul like they're planning. Gilded iguana seems so much better, and they'd have to change all the maps ;-)

“Great food; a bit expensive”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2014

Very good food (dinner and desserts). Service is great. There is more english than spanish spoken here. A lot of expats hang out here. You have to get the ice cream and brownie for dessert.

“Fish Tacos were fantastic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 2, 2014

I'm almost a year late with this review as I understand there are new owners, but I had a great meal when I dined here. I had the fish tacos, which were tasty, and my buddy had fish and chips both times we ate there.

“Disappointed since my last visit”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2014

The new owners have the wrong crew at the bar. Very disapppointed. They were a surly bunch - a big change from the previous wonderful and friendly staff from the old iguana. Hope the new owners can pull it together.

Hi Jeffrey G, thanks for your review. This review is super suspicious as you mentioned twice about the "new owners" - I would imagine for a restaurant review there should be something about the food quality, menu, service, etc - perhaps you are a former employee or competitor? would love to hear what you think about the food and sorry that you found the staff to be "surly" - we hope that is not a latent racist euphemism for "Tico" as this is Costa Rica, and the management is proudly entirely staffed by locals, including former bartenders and waiters from the prior years. We would hope you can make your judgement based on the food quality, ambiance, and service, or perhaps be open minded in considering that "Tico" does not equate to "surly". If you have any constructive criticism that would be very helpful. If there was a particular problem with a staff member, or your meal, we would be happy to know and pass the message along to the management in place at the restaurant and make any changes based on actual bad performance or actors. Thanks so much for your sincere concern for the new owners of the Gilded Iguana, we assure you that the management in place is doing a fantastic job and is as friendly and accommodative as has ever been at this fine establishment!

“Great meal in Playa Guiones”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 23, 2014

My wife and I had a fantastic meal at The Gilded Iguana. I had a vegetarian casado, a pretty standard Costa Rican dish with beans rice, plantains and salad. It was fantastic. My wife had garlic shrimp and loved her meal as well.

The service was great and the setting was quite nice.

If you're in Playa Guiones definitely stop by for a great meal.

Jeff, thanks so much for the kind words. Carlos and Melissa are doing an amazing job with the place and the food quality has exceeded our expectations. There is no place better to get fresh fish or typical Costa Rica cuisine, it is great to be able to provide guests with an authentic experience instead of an Americanized menu as it has been in the past. The transition from former menu to new has been a learning process, but the bottom line is we have the utmost faith and confidence in the staff and are pleased with the wonderful service they provide and see many other satisfied guests like yourself dining there each night. We look forward to your continued patronage and appreciate the vote of confidence.
