“The Residence - A Truly Elegant Wonder”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2013

The Residence is a gorgeous property that has a definitive atmosphere of elegant luxury... This was evident as soon as we entered the gates of the property and laid our eyes upon the immaculately crafted gardens that provide a proud welcome to new guests. The patches of lush vegetation juxtaposed with the manicured lawns, compliments the exotic setting and with the clean lines of the architecture within that setting, I felt that this resort was really well thought out and tasteful.

THEN... we were shown to our ocean front villa and I can honestly say that throughout all my travels, I have never felt so royal. The bathroom alone was bigger than my bedroom back in the UK and the shower was about the size of said bed. On the rim of the bathtub, there was a spa treatment menu, from which we could order our treatments, directly from our room phone and there was no shortage of towels and extra comforts throughout our stay.

The plunge pool is tiled with tiny blue squares, adding to my sense of appreciation for the designers attention to detail. The water was clean, warm and overlooking the sunset at the time we arrived. Needless to say we dove right in! There was space for about thirty people in that pool.

When we started to get hungry, we had no idea how far the clubhouse was in relation to where we were because it was dark, so we called off of the room phone to ask and they offered to pick us up in a golf cart. So off we went my friend and I (Feeling slightly embarrassed that the clubhouse was only a few strides away), to enjoy dinner in the form of an artisan curry that would have a certain Mr. Ramsay a bit jealous for sure :)

After dinner I was looking so forward to indulging in the sleep of ages in the four poster bed that was host to some of the most contented sleep I have had to this date... The Egyptian Cotton linen and feather pillows and duvet made sure of that!

So on the whole, this property was a winner for me and I imagine it would be for most. I have absolutely no negative feedback about The Residence because when you are going all that way to experience the idyllic paradise, it delivers effortlessly and with added extras to enjoy like their private beach, various activities and their glass sided swimming pool, the extra initiatives exercised by their staff are collectively what makes the entire experience exactly what you'd hope it would.

My wife and I just completed our honeymoon with a 3 night stay at The Residence Zanzibar and were very impressed with our experience. The resort is world class (my wife enjoyed it more than her stay at the Four Seasons in Lanai, Hawaii), impeccable in every way. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming from the assistant manager Kavi (upgraded us to an oceanfront villa and gave us a great tip to eat at The Rock restaurant with its amazing views and seafood) to receptionist Mazuri to porters/waiters Marco, Dotto, Haji, Kileo and Dominic. On the final night of our stay, we were treated to a fantastic private dinner in our villa that included a 3-course meal (seafood tartare, tagine and tropical fruits) on our back porch. The staff also set up a romantic arrangement in our bedroom that included flowers and candles that really impressed my wife. It was a special treat. We also enjoyed the buffet meals, particularly in the Pavillion, where there is also live music, as well as the couples massage (another treat for honeymooners). We enjoyed our stay so much we want to go back and/or visit The Residence properties in Tunisia, The Maldives and/or Mauritius. We also hope they'll expand to North America soon so we can visit more regularly :)

Room Tip: Oceanfront villas were fantastic.

Went there with 3 of my friends, stayed only for one night.

Requested 2 extra beds, had it in place and ready.

The staff is really nice, smiling and friendly.

The place is beautiful, the food perfect, the service is fast and flawless.

What else ? We were missing a bike but well, a bit of walk did not hurt me that much in that little piece of paradise.

We had a free massage offered for each one of us which was awesome.

Would absolutely recommend.

What can i say about The Residence?
Well to start with, the staff were very friendly and very helpful and always had a smile on their faces. The food was scrumptious with a lot of varieties to chose from. The rooms were superb with the private swiming pool which was amazing. Each guest is given a bike to get them around the hotel, which my grand kids really enjoyed.

To sum up, the residence is an amazing hotel with a warm and friendly atmosphere and i would recommend this place to any one who goes to Zanzibar.

The Residence, Zanzibar is an excellent hotel for quality, style and an all round marvellous experience.
We have now visited twice, and would most definitely return. The resort is truly elegant and stylish, yet the atmosphere is very warm and friendly. No-one can do enough to help with any request. It is a tranquil spot, kept pristine by the staff. The food is excellent, and the service matches.
The kids club, although not very busy during our second visit, could not have been more attentive and entertaining for our daughter.
The Spa is stunning and the massages were top notch. Pricey, but to be expected in such a resort.
We would highly recommend, particularly if you are looking for somewhere post safari that offers rest and pampering in an ideal setting.

Room Tip: All the villas are very spacious, but the beachfront is worth the extra money

We stayed at the Residence for 5 nights after a safari. It is consideres the best place in Zanzibar but it left us with mixed feelings. The place is great though it could do with some improvement in the "garden area" between the seafron and the garden view villas. Each villa is spacious with living room area separated from the bedroom, allowinf for 2 children bed to fit in. Each villa has its own little pool and terrace area though oura was not much in the sun. The big common pool is the place where eveybody gravitates around, you cycle around the resort so even if big the area you cover the distance quite quickly. The beach is nice and empty but do not expect a tropical sea. When tide is low, the sea is quite distant, and when it gets hogh it is rough and more for playing than snorkelling. For snorkellig activity you will have to get the boat out. Food was good, the Pavillon restaurant has buffet with theme night every evening, while the main restaurant has a la carte menu. Do not miss the African night each monday. Kids club is big and nice but it does not seem to attract the children, also they do not provide lunchea or dinner there, so if your children want ro have a movie might you will have to feed them in the villa before. We had 2 excursions, Stone Town visit and Spice Tour were ok, but Prison Island picnic was quite a disaster due to unfriendliness of the hotel there, so avoid it, go to another island for snorkelling. The service was good but a little bit slow and not so proactive. There was a little bit of unclarity in the final bill as though we had booked for 4 people with American Express Travel Services, they told we had to pay for the extra bed. So be sure to have all your receipt and booking forms! At the end nice stay but I would not go back.

The Residence is unique in Zanzibar. It combines huge grounds with friendly, personal service and high end luxury. It does this while being very family friendly too! Accommodation is in private villas which are beautifully done and come with private plunge pool. Each guest is given a bicycle to get you around the resort, which is great fun - even little pink bikes for girls and baby seats. Food was excellent, free water sports kept us entertained and the gym is extremely well equipped and modern. Proper pampering at its best!
