“Nice family hotel for quite rest.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2013

We lived in this hotel for 10 days, and we have only warm impressions about it. Elderly couple-owners of the hotel-create the home atmosphere. You feel, like you visit your own grandmother and grandfather. They even have a kitchen-garden on the territory of the hotel! Our room was clean, we had a balcony with a view on sunrise. The beach was rather far away, but we could see the sea from our balcony. We liked to swim in the pool. We bought amasing, delicious melons in a little fruit shop in about 100 metres from this place. It isn't 5-star hotel, but it's charm is in simplicity and in owners.

Nice hotel but make sure you get the right Hotel Irene (Ireni)

Hotel Irene in Crete, near to Heraklion, is a pleasant traditional hotel which is away from other hotels, but very near the bus stop. The pool was great and the room was good with nice views. A few friends of Dorothy were staying here. The hotel is situated along way from civilisation which may appeal to some. Be careful you don’t mix this hotel up with Hotel Ireni which we thought we had booked as we needed to be on a 7am flight. This hotel also goes by the same name and is 25 mins by bus from the airport rather than 5 mins that we thought. No problem unless the first bus doesn’t go till 6am and the taxis are on strike!! So it was hitching at 5.45am. Crete people (Well one chap in a borrowed jeep) are so friendly that we had our lift in the dark within 45mins. Not to be recommended!

The only reviews we could find for this hotel before we went were from a few years ago, and were less than impressive, so we were a little apprehensive. However, I’m happy to say that things have obviously changed for the better.

Firstly, the hotel stands next to the Old National Road, giving very good connections. It’s only 15 minutes from the airport, Knossos took only 10 minutes and we even got across to Gounion in the South in 75 minutes.

The road is quite busy, so we could hear quite a bit of traffic noise from our rooms, but during the day this was completely drowned out by the cicadas who chirp merrily from the trees in Crete all day (and I mean all day!). We were at the very front of the hotel, and I should imagine the rooms to the back are much quieter. The road was sheltered from view by shrubs and trees. It was certainly nice and peaceful by the pool. Planes also fly nearby on their way into Heraklion airport, but this wasn’t nearly as bad as it sounds!

Our first impressions were very favourable, with a large, clean and tidy entrance and reception. Our rooms were very spacious each with a balcony. There were twin beds rather than doubles, which anyone with romance in mind might want to take into account, but the beds can be pushed together if need be! The rooms were clean and in good enough order. We didn’t try the TV or the air conditioning, but they were there. The bathroom was adequate although on the old side. Don’t expect a power shower – you have to hold it up yourself, but it did the job. The bathroom was cleaned every day, but we were there for 5 nights and the sheets on the beds were not changed, although they probably would have been if we had asked.

We were booked on a bed and breakfast basis, and breakfast was self service every morning on a nice terrace under the shade of creepers and vines at the front of the hotel. Breakfast was bread, crispbread, jam, cheese, sliced meat, cornflakes, orange juice, tea or coffee. It wasn’t the most sumptuous spread, but was adequate to get the day started.

There was a very nice pool out the back with sunbeds which was open to hotel guests from 8am until 7pm. It was clean and well maintained and my boys loved it.

There is a small supermarket just around the corner which does basics. The beach is either a 20 minute walk straight downhill from the hotel or there is a very nice beach a little further on at Kato Gouves. We walked there in about 20-25 minutes. Kato Gouves has a selection of very good tavernas and bars (the Athevoli and Bar Ilios by the beach were both very nice with friendly staff and tasty food). There is also a larger supermarket there.

If you wanted the sort of holiday where you just camped by the pool for 2 weeks, you could do it here, but you would probably want to find more luxurious surroundings for that sort of holiday. We used the Hotel Irene as a base for various day trips around Crete and it was absolutely fine for that and very reasonably priced.

Well, where do i start. I have travelled for many years and have never had a holiday from , well now i have.
We are actually not that fussy, we just wanted a clean hotel, friendly service. We did not recieve any of this. the choice of the menu was limited along with the drinks. There were local watered down brandy, ouzo and wine poured out of a plastic water bottle! NO VODKA, Not even a local vodka unless you paid 4 euros. We were miss sold our holiday, we were told it is all inclusive oh, how wrong could we be. They are so clever now they have brought out..wait for it...all inclusive LIGHT which means in english...bugger all!!The biggest problem is their were no choice for anything. The hotel was dirty we did not have clean towels until i complained. A condom laid by a childrensmachine for four days, and peanut shells in the bar area for a week. You had to pay for airconditioning, well, you did not really, you could turn it on with a switch..rip off!! THE BAR STAFF WERE THE BEST..The daytime barmen was a perv and extremely lazy could not be bothered to serve you and the bulgarian thug took everything you said the wrong way and just argued with you..how nice!!
The people who enjoyed this hotel must have not very high standards. We work so hard for our holiday and we were so looking forward to it, now that is sad and utter pish!!, IT IS NOT FAIR..DO NOT GO ON THIS HOLIDAY....X

We have just returned from the hotel and must be honest it left alot to be desired in terms of location, cleanliness and quality of food. The hotel is a bit remote-much more than 400m from the beach. If you like walking it took about 45 mins to reach Gouves along the seafront (nice bars to stop at on the way) but the walk back was scary due to poor street lighting and no pavements. Bus stop and taxi rank is a 2 min walk but as an all inclusive guest you wouldn't expect to use them that often! Room was clean and quite spacious but basic-towels only changed once in a week stay, sheets not changed at all. Pool area looked unattractive unmatching parasols etc. Also guests seemed to be the only people to fish insects and other rubbish out of the water but thankfully no snails! Have to agree with previous comments that bar staff were rude and quite lazy-actually commented that we had 6 empty glasses on table when we were only a family of 3! Family commandeered pool at weekends showing little respect for guests and no respect at all for their property such as lilos etc - used and abused! Only advantage there was no need to get up at dawn to secure sunbed as hardly anyone stayed in hotel 24/7! Food was edible but nothing special. Breakfast was a sparse version of continental and you needed to get up early to receive full choice. Lunch often consisted of a revamp of the evenings before meal. Dining area bar was unstaffed for the whole of our stay. We booked for a week in the sun to get away from it all. Sun was plentiful and hotel certainly away from it all but had it been our main holiday this year I would have been devastated. Overall I feel the hotel is too small to offer all inclusive in the same way as the caribbean and larger med resorts and if that is what you expect you will be grossly disappointed. Would we go there again or recommend to others? No.

  • Liked — very very quiet
  • Disliked — poor all inclusive-ypou could not stay here without leaving hotel.

Just got back from staying at the Irene Beach Hotel at Gouves, 3 star hotel..I think not unless the stars are for Poor food, Poor hotel and Poor service. This is the worst place we have stayed in and it gives Crete a bad name. Avoid at all costs, even the paint off the pool came off when you put your knees down. Lovely area but never again to this hotel. No snacks, minimum local drinks which are rationed and bad attitude are the menu for here, everyone complaining.
