“tonys & christines stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 17, 2012

rooms clean but could do with adding aircon in with the price otherwise 7 euro per day
most of the food was ok but it was basic but you could go over the road for nice meal cheap at the rainbow
pool and pool bar are ok but all inclusive drinks dont start till 11am till 10.30pm
and only include local brandy ouzo wine and larger soft drinks tea and coffee
their is a main road outside the hotel but its not that bad realy once over the road it takes about 20mins to get to the beach but it is worth it very good
there is a few super markets near the hotel easy to find prices are ok
you can do excursions but would recomend that you dont do any with the tour operators they are not worth it cos you can do these cheaper on your own as their prices dont include entrance fees or meals so do take note
for instance me and my partner payed 144 euros for 2 trips and if we done on our own would of been about 90 euros with everything included
anyway all in all our stay at despo hotel was fine

Room Tip: no pool side rooms

Have just returned from the Despo having spent a week there with my daughter. Basically I cant believe some the comments posted about this hotel. We paid £450 all inclusive each, which judging by other comments, was very high.

However, we had a fabulous time and really dont understand what people expect. Certainly those paying only £250 each - what could you get in England for that money?!

Admittedly we upgraded to a superior room which was only an extra 70 euros and it was well worth it. The view over the mountains and olive groves was stunning and every morning we watched the staff collect the eggs and tomatoes for breakfast. The staff were so friendly and polite - Maria, Nicos to name a few. they worked long hours and always had a smile for you, especially you tried a little bit of Greek! The food was plentiful, varied and very tasty - all home cooked

Everywhere was kept clean and tidy - no rubbish and the gardens were delightful.
There were cats about but they were on the whole very healthy and knew not to come into the restaurant and waited outside for their titbits! They served the purpose of keeping vermin away which worked very well we never saw a cockroach or mouse!

The location of hotel has been critised but we didnt find it a problem. If you want somewhere with lots of bars and restaurants next door then you book there and not here! The drinks have also come in for criticism but again, you get what you pay for - if you want 5 star, then pay for it!

Finally, but by no means last, a big thank you to all the wonderful people we met and some firm friendships were made - especially Sue and John, Claire(Doris) and Andrew, Amy and Joanne and not forgetting Jacob and Carol - who kept us entertained in the restaurant with his hilarious jokes! We were quite touched to have such a warm send off when we left - or maybe they were just relieved to see the back of us!!

All in all, I would say if you like Greek people (they are the warmest in Europe in my opinion), Greek food and a homely atmosphere then this is the hotel for you. If you want burgers, chips, tons of booze and nightlife, then look elsewhere.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a superior room - rooms higher than 500 where the best.

I spend my holiday in Crete this year. I hve been choosen the Despo Hotel for my holiday. This is a perfect three star hotel, with a very very good staff. If you really want to find a hotel with good quality for the money, don't hesitate to choose this hotel :) All inclusive service is great too: lots of fruits, vegetables, delicious food. There is a very good swimming pool at the hotel.

Just returned from a week at Hotel Despo and its true you get what you pay for in my case £250 for a week all inclusive. The food was not that bad really not Jamie Oliver but tasty and plentiful.
Drinks on the other hand well that's a joke for all inclusive beer, Greek brandy and soft drinks and it all finished at 10-30 then it cost 3 euros for a small beer rip off Despo.

Across the road is the Rainbow great food and a large beer and I mean large for 2euros and 50 cent.
We had the dreaded basement rooms 110 and whilst basic we only slept and showered here it served a purpose, the staff at reception especially Katarina were brilliant, the guy allocating tables in the restaurant with the moustache was a gem.
Like I said this hotel is ok but not great.

Room Tip: Do not accept the basement rooms.

Just arrived home from a week at the despo, hotel in need of some basic refurb. Stayed in room 107 in basement. (dungeon). Shower hanging off wall and curtains hanging down . No air con facilities only a small fan . No tv and concrete beds/ head boards, nearly smacked my head in on two occasions . Do not go all inclusive as the drinks poor and bar only open 11 am til 10.30 . U can go b and b instead and eat in the bar across the road ( the rainbow) for 4 plus euros a meal and the owner ( George will keep u entertained) . The pool and staff at the despo were very good and without them it could have been a nightmare . Maria and the young lad who worked on the afternoon shift were brilliant. Loads of cats hanging round restaurant . Overall this could be a lovely place to stay if the owners invested a bit of money into it. Jan and dave

I really needed to write this review with it being my first experience abroad. We went for a week on September 18th. Gouves is lovely. The beach is a 10 minute stroll and a sunlounger and parasol was 6 euro. The Despo Hotel was lovely. We had room 506 and it was huge! We had a kingsize bed, a bath with a shower and a view looking over the gardens. The shower was always hot. The television worked and we had a fridge. We did pay 14 euros for the safe for the week. Air conditioning was 7euro a day but as we spent little time in the room we didnt need it. Food was fabulous! Proper greek cooking and full of flavour. Always salads and pastas and rice. Which they eat as starters. Then at least 2 different mains and a vegatarian option. Always a pudding. It is Greece, if you want burgers and fish and chips and full english go to blackpool! Cant believe the moaners about food. The drinks on all inclusive were limited. Spirits were brandy, ouzo or raki. I discovered brandy and coke is really nice :o). The lager was good. White wine was like paintstripper and the rose and red was drinkable. But eh? You cant win them all. All the staff were super friendly. Worked very hard and made you very welcome. I wouldnt hesitate to come back here. Met some lovely people. Liz and Bob we miss you already. :o)

Before booking a holiday to Despo, we read a lot of reviews which seemed unjust, our travel agents however strongly recommended the place so we went for it!
On arrival at approx. 12am, me and my girlfriend were welcomed by a fairly pleasant receptionist, Mike, who gave us a huge weight lifting key! We carried our own suitcases to the first floor. The room was twin bedded and tiny! Too small for us and we had specifically requested a double bed. After explaining that the room wasn't good enough he swapped it for a double room, which was a lot bigger and nicer. The view wasn't as nice (facing the main road) unlike the garden view in the smaller room.
Breakfasts was continental but nice to our taste, some people complained about there not being English style breakfast eg.bacon, beans etc but that's what you get most places abroad. There were bars and restaurants not far which did serve a full English. Lunch and dinner had a variety of Greek style selection which was all very tasty, served as a buffet. The chef serves you the hot food available (which you could only have one helping of) but there was also an all you can eat salad area, which had a great range of Greek style goods (pasta, rice, feta cheese, tzatziki, bread, salad etc).
The 'all inclusive' alcohol was a slight disappointment, the brochure stated that it included vodka, rum and gin on the menu but this was not the case. The choices were: Ouzo, Raki, Brandy, Beer and Wine. If we knew this earlier we may have gone elsewhere, some people including ourselves bought our own vodka and just added it to the soft drinks available at the hotel. The wine seemed a bit watered down, but if you drink enough it still gets you drunk lol!
A special mention goes to Rainbow Bar across the road from Despo, George was a great host. They served great food and amazing cocktails at a good price with free wifi as there was no wifi in Despo.
The pool area was great, everyone was friendly and the greenery made the place look lovely. The cleaners were friendly and kept everything well presented. The room had a mini fridge and a safe as well as optional air con at a price, In between meals, ice cream was served 3-6, 'snacks' were available 3-6, although they were quite lame, usually bread or sandwiches left over from lunch.
The hotel is a 10 minute walk to a small beach which was lovely, however a 20 minute walk to the main shopping area and restaurants. Close to the hotel is a shop called Mike Tours which has a selection of day trips and rent a cars. We purchased a quad bike for 24 hours for only 20 euros which got us around very quickly and was so much fun! Another couple we spoke to had a car rented for 2 weeks so they enjoyed loads of days out around the island.
All in all it was a lovely, but basic, holiday. You pay for what you get! We were very happy with our holiday at Despo :)
p.s there was ALOT of cats at despo,,,

Room Tip: ask for garden view.. there is no pool view rooms as stated in brochure
