“But they couldn't fix the weather!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2012

This was our third trip to Barga but our first stay at Casa Fontana.
Barga is an amazing place, lost in time with little invasion of the tourist industry. Great base to visit the local towns & Lucca.
Casa Fontana was a rare treat, an opportunity to enjoy sharing Susi & Ron's home, the great dining room, Tuscan breakfast, thankfully without the cakes!,the wonderful garden.
We always enjoy the Barga restaurants, this time was no exception.
However the weather was not kind! Torrential rain, cold & wind!!
Will need to return in better weather, any excuse!!

Ron and Susi have created a lovely house in the attractive old town, where there are a surprising number of excellent restaurants, exhibitions, music and other cultural enterprises. It is set in the most beautiful countryside which offers all manner of walks, (energetic or otherwise), and is the perfect spot for drawing or painting. The old town itself is very attractive, and the countryside full of wild flowers, olive groves and vineyards. Our hosts could not have been kinder, and are also extremely knowledgeable about the local history, customs, businesses and people. They serve locally produced ham, cheese and home made jams and chutneys with breakfast, and are wonderfully relaxed while being attentive to one's slightest need.
We could not recommend it more highly.

Room Tip: The best rooms have a balcony.

We stayed in Casa Fontana from 17th to 24th July 2012 and had a great week at Ron & Susi's. They made us feel so welcome - as if we had known them for years. We met some lovely people in Barga and at Casa Fontana. We happened to choose a great week as there was lots going on in the town i.e. live bands etc on almost every night. Some of the Restaurants were superb and good value for money. Our favourite in particular being "Ricardos". There is a lovely outdoor pool in the town but a word of warning you must wear a swimming cap which Ron & Susi very kindly provided. The views were spectacular from our balcony and we much enjoyed our walk to Tilio Alto (not sure of spelling). We went to Lucca which we would recommend - plenty of shops and restaurants and we cycled round the city wall. The public transport system is good, on time and cheap!! Barga is a lovely old town with plenty of Scottish connections but don't let that put you off (HA HA)!! Would definitely recommend and will be back.

Room Tip: Room with a Balcony a must!!

Just came back from a 1 weeks stay 13/20 August 2012 at the Casa Fontana in Barga Tuscany,Ron and Susi who own and run the B&B are very nice people and very helpful to travellers and will give you a warm welcome its a pity other hotels were not as welcoming as Ron and Susi...... but my wife and I were very disappointed in the room. If we had to rate Casa Fontana on the welcome and the way Ron and Susi look after their guests it would be a 6* but the room we were allocated was very very basic and not very big but it had a nice little balcony which had some lovely views but the interior let it down, yes it was very rustic but to basic for our liking, it had a pole across a recess in the corner of the room which measured about 30 inches across which acted as your wardrobe for both of you and below that there were 3 small draws there were 2 small chairs and your bed and that was it, there was no A/C and the temperature reached 41 degrees while we were there,we were given a fan but had to asked for it, the bathroom had a nice shower wet room but that too was a little small, it seemed a little expensive we thought around 80 was a fair price to pay not 110 p.n. The breakfast was help yourself to, thinly sliced Italian bread thinly sliced ham and cheese, mixed fruit and home made jams along with tea, coffee and juices. You all sit at the same long table for breakfast so it does give you a chance to meet other people.
Barga is a lovely place but I think its a must to have a car as you will soon get bored unless you are on a short stay. The Casa Fontana has a good location in the walled city which has some very steep streets but the city is a touch of real Italy there is not alot I can say except its a must visit beautifull place its very safe to walk about at night but for me 3-4 days stay at the most and I am so glad we visited. If its shopping your after then this is not the place for you the nearest good shopping is Lucca.Would I recommend Barga most definately.

While it is disappointing to receive a harsh review, we can take comfort in the many positive comments that Genuine121 has written. It was clear to us from the start that what we offer in Barga is not what he expects in a holiday - resort type hotels with pool and good shopping opportunities. That is definitely NOT Barga. Barga is a beautiful mediaeval Tuscan hilltown steeped in history, art, music and excellent food served in small family restaurants. Casa Fontana is right in the historic centre.
It is unfortunate that he arrived at the height of the summer season during an unprecedented heatwave. We don't have a/c as it is rarely needed here with cool mountain air and normal night and morning temperatures below 18 degC. Daytime temperatures normally don't exceed 30degC.
Luckily the vast majority of our guests do appreciate what Casa Fontana and Barga have to offer. Our thanks to all of them for their continued support.

We stayed in July for 1 week while my husband was attending a conference at a nearby resort.
Casa Fontana is perfect in all respects. It has the best location in the old town, beautifully restored and appointed rooms, nice garden to realx. The best of all are the charming hosts Ron and Susi-we got a very warm welcome and great advice on everything. The breakfast is nice and fresh, with fruits from their garden. The rooms are spacious and very clean, and those with balcony have spectacular views of the area. This was the best choice for us and I believe the best choice to stay in Barga. We all hope to return one day.

Room Tip: Rooms with balcony are the best.

This charming B&B located in the hilltop town of Barga at the northern end of Tuscany offers rustic charm, the warmest hosts one could ever hope to meet, and a relaxing sense of calm. Ron & Susi are gracious and knowledgeable, offering terrific recommendatoins for local hikes, restaurants, and travel tips.

Our room was clean and tastefully decorated, with a wonderful view. There is no air-conditioning, but even in the height of the mid-August heat, the evenings offer a cool respite and a comfortable night's sleep.

Breakfast is very well presented and include selections of local fruits, meats, cheeses, juices, toast, and foccee or tea. The dining area is charming, as is the garden area.

Room Tip: Rooms away from the street are your best bet, as Barga is a working town where people arise early (a...

Planning to go to a place that only one person has suggested and no-one else has ever heard of (even amongst our Italian friends!) invokes a little fear and apprehension as to what we were to expect. Quite the contrary. Everything we had read on tripadvisor regarding Ron and Susi and Casa Fontana is completely true. We were made to feel like family members coming home. When we arrived Susi showed us our immaculate bedroom (with sprigs of lavender on each pillow) and Ron took us on a tour of the old town and got us settled in a restaurant with delicious food (there are many places to dine in, in Barga). We met up with Susi and Ron that afternoon under the vines in their garden and over a glass of wine they gave us suggestions what to do in Barga. One of the best things was Ron's suggestion to walk to the shepherdess a few villages away to purchase some soft pecorino. Even with a letter of introduction,it was not an easy feat with no common language between us. If you want to go somewhere where time has stood still, the air is fresh and the birds sing all day long then the mountain town of Barga is for you and in our opinion there is only one place to stay and that is Ron and Susi's "Casa Fontana"

Room Tip: We had a balcony room which looked over the garden and the town.
