“Well run hotel - a bit too far from the beach”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2011

1 week stay, first week of Aug 2011 - Family with 3 children, 10, 8, 4 year's old.
We chose Side primarily for the weather, we were not disappointed with 35+ every day, 29 at night, and 28-29 deg in the water!
This hotel is a big machine and located a bit away from the beach. This means most rooms have poor views. The best ones have a view over the main pool. The walk to the beach is about 200m, which doesn't sound that much but can be a pain with almost 40 deg heat and 3 young children.
On the beach, each large hotel has its area with a restaurant and many deck chairs, with always plenty available. The sandy beach is clean and very kids friendly, with shallow waters and small surf. The all coast is full of peaple, in fact I had never seen so many deck chairs in my life.

Guests of the Monachus are entitled to borrowing a windsurf (against international certificate ??), a kayak or a pedalo, once a day at the watersport center. Their staff was particularly unwelcoming though, and I was never allowed a ride, as they are too busy selling rides behind their power boats. Quite disappointing for us...

The service was generally very good is the hotel, with friendly staff that doesn't overdo it either. Impeccable room service. The food was really the high point there, with a very large choice of salads, vegetables, fresh fish every day, soups, wide choice of deserts and plenty of junk food as well (chips, sausages etc.)
Drinks are available all day, soda dispensers, lager and wines. There's even ice-creams give aways twice a day!
The pools are cleaned every night and open until 19:00.
The Spa was quite good with friendly and well trained staff. We tried Turkish bath and hot stones massage. Both are recommended. Good value.
There is a young animation team trying to get you to silly pool games. They're not pushy though. They have a show in the evening, involving kids. The whole atmosphere is pretty laid back.

Hotel population is mostly german. There are a few Brits and Dutch as well as Russians. Mostly families. Everyone is "well-behaved" and I haven't witnessed anyone behaving improperly, being drunk.
All prices are in Euros and I advise you to avoid the TRL as prices will be higher if you use the local lira.

The area around has very little cultural interest. Side has some nice ruins but the village is really just a gigantic shopping center, with hundreds of shops selling pretty much the same. If you're into counterfeit goods, you'll find happiness there, from fake watches to copied designer clothing. Knockoffs joints as far as the eye can see...
The coast presents little interest as well, as it is basically one long beach.

If you want a week by the pool, with nice food and guaranteed sun, go ahead. But beware, the place is purely functional and has no charm what so ever.

We have never been to turkey before so didn't quite know what to expect! We have cOme home totally elated with experiencing such a lovely country! Whilst we were there temperatures were high 40's so certainly a sun lovers destination.
The hotel was lovely, rooms were a little basic but have exactly what you need. They are well serviced everyday no matter what time you vacate your room.
The food was lovely lots of fresh salads and varying main dishes throughout the day. Perhaps a little more catered for young children with an ever supply of pizza and chips if you so wished.
The hotel was very family orientated and the staff were all exceptionally very good at integrating with all ages.
The hotel has been a main stay for German tourists for the past 20 years so you don't really hear an awful lot of British accents- which we found actually quite nice! I don't speak German however all the staff basically have it as their second language, signs in the hotel are also in German, entertainment can be in German and also the tv's in the bedroom have many German channels.
Side itself is 20 mins in a bus and very definately worth a visit! Such a beautiful town with so much to offer. History, restoration, sites, shopping and a vibrant night life.
We will
Definitely go back to visit!

Please don't go to this hotel....
First of all you will be treated like an animal because nobody speak English only Turkish or German, food extremely poor (recycling every day). Animators and Bar staff are OK but the Reception always want to rip you off.
I have been in Turkey for more than 10 times and this trip was the worst experience ever and if you still intend to visit this hotel be ready to pay extra for changing towels 0,50 pence for each towel change, alcohol after 12, key card loss 5 Euro and loss of towels 10 Euro, and please do not brake anything in the room otherwise you will end up in Jandarma (local police) like my friends and pay penalty of 1000 pounds

I'M writing this know as I forgot to do this when I returned last August (2010)
So, check in and rooms: rooms were basic but very clean. Didn't spend much time in there so didn't want anymore than that!
Pool: Music a bit loud sometimes. Always found a sunbed.Children loved the slides (not on all the time...check the timings)
Food: I didn't expect much from a Turkish hotel. Clientel mainly german, yet despite that, fussy eater as I am, always found something tasty to eat.
Bar: wine was a discrace. Beer was good. Vokda was pointless. Children's drinks were very good
Amenities: Great! Main pool was lovely, little pool with water slides. Wander off about 200 metres to the other 2x pools and there's trampolines, mini golf, wall climbing
Beach: Beach was a treat...clean, plenty of loungers with shade, a bar, snacks, and watersports (always haggle for these)
People: All of the staff were lovely, English wasn't great but their enthusiasm made up for that.
Shopping: Be brave and get a bus to the market, the vendors are nowhere near as pushy as those I experienced in Tunisia....we had a lovely time there
I would go back in a heartbeat if it weren't for the fact there are too many other places to discover!!!

Age - 23 and 25
Country - England
Date of stay - 23 - 2 may 2011

Tour operator - Thomas cook

Welcome meeting - our rep never turned up...and no1 came the next day...or the next....or the next

Hotel experience -

this hotel is a very clean, quiet and focused towards the Germans. 98% of guests were german and all activities and communication was in german. It wasn't until our 3rd day did the reps realise we were English and then all instructions were german and English translated (not that we should have been treated like royalty it would have been nice to actually understand what was going on from day one)

The food was okay... A lot of the evening meals the same and a lot of meals recycled (what was on at lunch was put on at dinner but in a different style I.e. Sprouts for lunch... Then in a cheesy mash for dinner, then the next day this would happen to something different, a plus point for waste however not the best for choice of food.

Lunch each day was pretty much the same, grilled fish or chicken with rice or spaghetti not much of a change...

The waiters were fantastic for the first few days, willing to get your drinks for you, clearing tables until they realised you're not big tippers (I tip when someone's done something out of their way, not when they expect it) however there is a tip box at the exit of restaurant for waiters and kitchen which I'd rather put tips in.

ThIs hotel is a good hotel, relaxed not a hustle and bustle hotel. A nice atmosphere here, ice cream at 4pm each day lunch at 12.30 dinner at 7.

There are two a la carte restaurants at the sister hotel across the way which you can use,  Fish and Italian. You can only eat in one, we chose the Italian.

You were asked to choose your main when you booked at calimera reception from a folder, and no menu provided to see what you'd be looking forward to. When you enter the restaurant you are greeted again in german, and shown to your table with your starters already waiting for you, there are around 4 courses before your main, you have a choice of 3, we chose beef and the other meal lamb.
The lamb was deep fried and very small, more like a kebab than a chop, the beef was extremely salty - if this is something you like then you'll love it here. We rarely add salt to our food but this was vile. There was also a guitar player but not sure how he fitted in the Italian theme...

Is this really all inclusive?

So, like most all inclusive's you get your local beer (here it's tuborg) vodka wine etc... But you have to pay for:

International spirits (like normal hotels)
Wine in al a carte (if bottle)
Turkish coffee
Towels.... Which we didn't realise - maybe this is the norm but I've never heard of this before.

In your "info" book in the room it doesn't say anything about a charge for towels however each day you swap towels you're charged 0.50 € We didn't realise this and changed each day because who is really going to have the same towel for a weeks trip?(we did 9 days so really had to change) I certainly wouldn't, so when we extended our room (30€ from 12-6 which was 63 lira for us) we also had a charge of 10.50 TL to pay, however we got this refunded due to not being made aware of this and in the "info brochure" it only says a charge if your towel card is not returned. This really annoyed us as we had to explain for more than 10 minutes that we were not told and it didn't say anywhere however we were put on to the manager who argued the point and then decided we didn't need to pay for this. He did explain that we should have been told that we would be charged when visiting the spa area.

The location is fine, close to side (pronounced sea-day) and costs 3 TL each way. To go to side keep on the same side as your hotel on the main road and there are little buses that take you to the main bus station. On way back go to same station however look for a little bus that says hotel club monachus park (that's the hotel opposite)

After all the above I'm not moaning, purely letting you know of the experiences we encountered and hopefully to help you all a little bit!

The bar staff are great friendly and know what you drink even without tipping! The reps are great also, just don't be shy and speak to them, we had lunch and dinner with them and their all great!

Literally 3 minute walk from beach and it's all inclusive on their too if you stay within the club calimera part.

A little bit on the rooms - sleeps 3 1 double bed and a single, loads of power points, tv etc... No iron (I was looking for someone to say about a iron glad I took my own travel one) you also have to pay €30 for the safe, we just put all valuables in our case and locked each day.

Wireless internet which is....okay, we were using mobile devices such as iPhone and iPad. The password is calimera2011 however if using mobile device, you will then need to load up web browsers if it doesn't come up auto and then put in your hotel room in top box and passport number in bottom box, however if it doesn't work when you type your passport number is this is down to the fact they've written it down wrong at reception or, you're logged in twice, make sure you use your own passport number if using mobile device Facebook app cuts the inteernet off don't know why but you'll need to enter your room no and passport no in again to reconnect. Wireless can be accessed in reception, restaurant and on the pool side.

Just a little warning - there is a new hotel being built behind this hotel however you don't even hear the noise, and what noise you do here is minimal. The hotels mostly complete (building wise) so it's mainly just putting window in etc... However not sure if any other reviews have captured this.

Hope this helps!

Our room was lovely spacious and clean with air con which was well needed! The cleaners came in every day but we never seen them once we just arrived back after a day out to a spotless room :) Also we got a double bed!!! every holiday we have been on we have always had single beds so we were very pleasantly surprised to arrive and find a huge double bed!

The staff at the hotel are very friendly and love to chat to everybody - there are a few that don't really smile or talk to the guests but you get that everywhere, the bar staff where great especially Shukan who literally couldn't do enough for us the whole time we where there. One member of staff who wasn't every helpful was the photography man - we won one free professional photo on the bingo but he wouldn't give us it - unless we bought another 30 photo's which he wanted 300 euro's for - absolute rip off not to mention very aggressive.

Other guests -

There where a lot German guests at the hotel which didn't really bother us at first but as time went on they started to grate on us, they actually complained to the bar manager because our group was sat round the bar area - I mean seriously get a life - your on holiday you sad sad people! On the other hand we met 8 amazing people that we intend to stay in touch with for a very long time , it really was the company that made our holiday everything it turned out to be! One thing i would say is German's are favoured in the hotel so if that would be an issue for you don't go!

Food -

The food is the one and only thing that i can complain about - although there is a lot of selection that selection doesn't change much at all so its the same food every day. Breakfast was without doubt the best meal of the day although even that wasn't that great, dinner and tea was very bland. They don't cook food properly the eggs at breakfast are still raw in the middle and the meats are still pink in the middle it really is vile! My partner suffered with sickness and diarrhoea most days of the holiday. Also be aware that not all drinks are included in the 'all inclusive' cocktails cost extra as does bottled beer & wine. All inclusive is from 10am til 12pm so its not a 24 hour thing as it was in our previous all inclusive hotel in Morocco.

All in all the holiday was great but would i return? probably not - purely because of the food - had the food been better this would have been a 10/10 holiday for us - the best bit is that we've made some friends for life!

I booked this holiday over the internet, never been All Inclusive before but the price was a bargain for two. My friend admits to being a fussy eater, yet she certainly didn't go hungry! Within an hour of arriving we had met Buffy, one of the Animation (Entertainment) team. I cannot praise all the animation Team enough, they were friendly, hard working, but never gave the impression of it just being a job, At times Ibo the childrens entertainer resembled the Pied Piper, all the children loved him and followed him everywhere.
The bar staff were excellent and if their English was not perfect, then there's nothing stopping us Brits ordering drinks in Turkish.Nearly all the staff I spoke to were understandable. I had more difficulty understanding the Irish! I thoroughly enjoyed my stay, there are plenty of shopping opportunities in Kumkoy, a 20 minute walk along the promenade, Manavgat- get the Dolmus and barter in the Bazaar or Market on Monday/Thursday. DO go to a Hammam and have a Turkish bath its amazing! Above all, remember you are on holiday and say hello to both staff and guests and join in.
