Just got back last night. 6 days in water villa - 6 days in a beach villa. Water villas are really lovely. Great pool but the surround is like really rough sandpaper. You couldn't lean back or lean on it to relax in the water but overcame this by using a hand towel to cushion the effect. Found I didn't like how long the walk was to the island in the searing heat but I was aware that this is the longest water villa jetty in the Maldives. You can call a buggy but it takes Away from being spontaneous and nipping out for a walk or drink. Snorkelling was just metres from our steps at villa 73 and was pretty good. Saw lots of fish. Fridges in the room were warm so the drinks were not cold. They do make sure you have big bucket of ice twice a day though.
Beach villa was fantastic - much better for us. We had villa 11 which was in my opinion the best along with number 12. Huge. Best bit of the beach. Lovely lagoon to swim in. Very private. Loved it. The island is lovely, the staff are the best I have come across. Every single one of them make you feel as though they love having you there and nothing is too much trouble.
The Apple TV system was fantastic. Films, music, internet on demand.
For us the only let down was the big game fishing. This is an independently run business to the island. At 1500 US$ we were told we would get half a day. We set off at 6 am travelled 40 minutes- by the time the rods were out we Started fishing at 7.15. At 9.30 they said we had to get back. In all rods out for only 2 1 /4 hours. Back at the island just after 10 am. Felt quite ripped off really. We expressed our disappointment to the staff. As we were leaving the island the dive centre manager came to see us and asked what he could do. As we were going home it was a silly question. He said did we want him to try and get a discount. This felt embarrassing. We are happy to pay this kind of money but felt it was not value and really we should not have been asked, it should have just happened. It didn't. My Husband said that if due to tidal conditions they had to travel far they should factor this into the package and give people a guaranteed period of time that they were actually fishing and not just be out on a boat ride. Will they take this on board - probably not. In our own business which is fishing - if any customer is not happy with our products we rectify it immediately - no ifs or buts. Customer service should be paramount to any business as it goes a long way to keeping people loyal to your brand. Would not recommend anyone to bother wasting their money on the fishing. Last year at Lily Beach the fishing was fantastic 6 good hours with rods out for 4 plus of that time.
Don't have the club sandwich. Really bad. Did tell them but they didn't remove it from the bill which we found amusing as in a decent restaurant this would have been deducted.
From the minute we were met at the airport to the minute we were taken back to the airport the service was first class. We loved our time at Halaveli and yes we will be back despite these niggles but we won't be fishing and I won't have a club sandwich. If you are thinking of going just do it - you won't regret it. We heart all of them from the gardeners to the General Manager - you should be proud. We will return.
