“Nice view”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 24, 2012

The lodge has pros and cons. Pros: it's cheap, there are bathrooms attached to the rooms, it has an amazing view of the mountains. Cons: the layout is quite odd and there is no real communal area even though there is so much space for it, and the kitchen. The kitchen is FILTHY. We stayed for three days and the same pieces of food and dirt were in the same place the whole time, so the floor obviously didn't get cleaned. There is old food spattered all over the walls, heaters, microwaves...very very dirty. Also, the kitchen is small. Our room didn't get cleaned the whole time we were there and there was scummy stuff all around the taps. But because it was so convenient to have our own bathroom I didn't really mind. So if you can handle the kitchen it's a good deal.

Room Tip: Ask for one with a view- the balconies are awesome.

The Lodge might be old and in real need of redevelopment but it had just about all that was required. Clean and comfortable and great position. If you want better then go to The Hermitage and pay a small fortune. I was travelling with my 2 sisters so required cooking and bathroom within the room and have no complaint. Staff were super friendly and always good for a laugh.Sit out front late evening with a glass of something and view the sunset. wow.

To sum it up:
1. This place has a great view from the room, however what you are seeing is NOT Mt Cook. The actual Mt Cook can only be viewed from The Hermitage which is the sister hotel and cost alot more. So hike up there to see the real Mt Cook
2. It's relatively clean though the bed isnt that comfortable but its all about the views
3. The communial kitchen is great but not all cooking hobs works
4. The bar is great and there's a great dining area with views to kill for and if you don't cook then you can order dinner - mains are from NZD20ish but the food is a little bland
5. They have activities like quiz night and etc which is very nice of them
6. Check out the activities that you can do - I booked the glacier expedition and it was wonderful
7. They don't provide towels and when asked, they will offer it but I've forgotten it come with a cost. Sure NZD10 isn't a big deal BUT this is how I can afford so many trips a year, by skimming on as many 10 dollars as I can and when the staff sarcastically replied - oh so now you don't want the towels? I thought it was alittle rude even though I have apologized for their trouble

Dear Daniel
You are right when you say Mount Cook can't be viewed from Mount Cook Backpacker Lodge, from the rooms the will be viewing Wakefield Mountain Range and it's only a short 50m walk to view Aoraki Mount Cook,.
I'm a wee bit concerned to find out through your feedback on trip advisor that some of the cooking hobs didn't work, we have looked at the cooking hobs they seem to be working fine now, shame the staff weren't aware of this issue on the night in question.

I'm extremely disappointed to hear that the staff were sarcastic and unprofessional this is not acceptable behavior, we do provide towels in all the private rooms and towel hire for dorms are $5NZD.
I'm glad you enjoyed the views and hope you will return some day to rectify some of our mistakes.
Thanks

Very good for a backpackers lodge - almost as good as the average hotel, but with an amazing view in the Hooker Valley at the foot of Mount Cook. Good facilities with rather helpful staff. The location itself is what's best about this place. With not many options available in this tiny village I think this is probably the best value accommodation in town.

this place used to be a hotel, i guess. every 4-bed dorm has an ensuite bathroom which is a cool bonus for a backpacker's place. The view from the room was breathtaking - just at the Mt Cook.
I was absolutely satisfied with the quality of accomodation.
and we had just an amazing quiz-night followed by karaoke at the bar. The staf really did their best to entertain guests which i am very much grateful for.

I stayed here for new year 2012 and had a great time. The four bed dorm had an amazing view of the mountains and a little balcony. The bathroom was spotless as was the dorm. There was lots of different hikes and trips to do close to the hostel. There is also a kitchen and a bar where you can get cooked meals. I would recommend this to anyone!

I stayed at this backpacker lodge while travelling on Stray bus and I have to say it is probably on e of the best backpackers I have stayed at in NZ. The 4 bed dorms all have their own bathroom with a bath and have balconies on the second floor with amazing views of the mountains and they are super warm, clean and comfy. The staff were all super friendly and the reception manager Sonny had so much knowledge about the area and was great to sit and chat too.
I highly recommend this backpacker to anyone going to Mt Cook...
