“Best value in mount cook”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 25, 2011 via mobile

Stayed in a studio room. Clean and tidy. You get what you pay for. The Hermitage looked awesome but was expensive. Ask for a mountain view. The bar and restaurant was awesome for a backpackers. Bring your own coffee or tea.

We came from Queenstown and even though it was quite a wet and cold day I still really enjoyed my stay here-the kitchen was great and we had an ensuite dorm with a BATH which we got terribly excited about!!!
the lounge room is great-spent some time relaxing on the beanbags!!! :)
the manager Jock was really nice too :)

Stayed for 1 night. Had a 4 bed dorm and it was ensuite. Bed was comfy and room was clean. So was the kitchen which was huge. Guy at reception, Jock, was very helpful & friendly too. No complaints.

Over-priced, shabby, and way below standard. The carpet in our "motel" room was filthy, there were dirty cups in the cupboard, no kitchen utensils, only one small pot to cook with, no bowls, no teapot, no coathangers or drawer space, no table. The sort of standard you might accept (and even expect) in a cheap backpackers, but not at $185 a night, which is what we were charged.

This hostel has amazing views of Mt. Cook, and for the price, this is great. The hotel next door is about $2,000/night, so I was getting quite a bargain for the same view. The hostel is not new, but it has solid facilities (clean kitchen, clean bathrooms - each room has its own bathroom). I stayed in a 4 person room, and I was quite happy with it. The one word of advice that I would give this hostel is to have more consistent customer service. When I checked in with Stray bus, we were in a large group, and I asked the female receptionist to put me in a room with two other friends of mine. She refused. I didn't think it was appropriate and went back with the same request to the male receptionist who didn't have an issue granting it.

I have booked via the lodge's website and it show that the rooms are clean, modern and facing mt cook. However, when I stayed the manager told me that only dorm room can face the mountain but the double room with much higher price does not. The room is old, and equipment is slack even cannot provide a water heater!! We even cannot have a hot water!!! In other accommodation in New Zealand water heater is a standard equipment in a room. I have a room without mountain view but told to have before, and the room is totally different with it has been shown by pic. I feel I am cheated and hope you do not choose this accommodation any more. Will not recommend to others.
