I stayed at White Island Rendezvous in Whakatane in mid-February 2007, primarily because it's where the White Island Volcano boat tour departs from, so it's very convenient if you're taking that tour. I stayed in one of the deluxe units, which have air conditioning. The unit was very roomy and clean, with a nice kitchenette, and is within easy walking distance of both the boat pier and the town center. The attached cafe serves a great breakfast/brunch menu, but you need to venture into town for dinner options.

The volcano tour is awesome. The boat crosses open ocean, so a helicopter tour might be a better choice if you're prone to seasickness, but the sea was calm on my sailing and no one on board had any problems. You do have to clamber over a large field of boulders to reach the island itself, so think twice about taking this tour if you have balance problems or aren't reasonably limber. Once ashore, though, the walking is fairly easy. The tour operators issue everyone a gas maks as well as a hard hat, and it's not for just show; the acrid fumes from the volcano vents are very irritating, so if you have asthma or other breathing difficulties be sure to use the mask and take along your inhaler! The scenery is like something from another planet: steaming fumeroles, sulpher crystals everywhere, boiling mud pots, a central steaming crater lake with waters colored an unearthly turquoise, ash deposits. The volcano also hosts the remains of an ill-fated mining camp, and the tour guides provide a lot of history about the past mining attempts. I'd recoomend this tour to anyone who is in reasonably good physical shape and interested in geology.

Our family of four adults took two rooms are the Rendezvous motel. Overall, it was a great value for the service and room they provide.

Each of our rooms came with one double and one single bed. A small, but functional kitchen was also provided. It had everything except a stove (free, available upon request). Glasses, mugs, plates, bowls, flatware, etc. were all standard. A nice selection of teas and coffee is also available. They even provide each room with an individual container of fresh milk/cream upon check-in.

The bathroom was large and well lit, with a working ventilation fan. The shower had great water pressure with new fixtures.

The site provides coin laundry (NZ $2) and paid wireless internet ($3.50 for 1/2 hour, $7 for an hour, $20 for 24 hours). It's expensive, but very fast.

The full service hotel cafe is the best part. We walked around the main strip (The Strand) to find a place for breakfast, but we returned to the hotel for their gourmet breakfast options. I had the Vegetarian Brekie Croissant -- a fresh croissant with spinach, egg and yogurt (it was actually very good).

The hotel staff was professional and very accommodating. We got a flat tire and arrived after the normal check-in hours, but with a phone call they waited for our arrival and arranged a late dinner reservation at a restaurant across the street.

  • Liked — Great showers, professional staff, amazing cafe
  • Disliked — Internet is expensive

This hotel is owned and run by Peejay's, which are the company that do the tours to White Island, so it is very convenient if you are going on the tour. We stayed in a deluxe room, which meant we got air con and a spa bath. The room was huge with a kitchen attached to it. The bathroom was a good size with a huge spa bath. The room was well equipped with iron & ironing board, microwave, fridge etc. There is a coffee shop attached to the hotel where you can have a free coffee if you are staying at the hotel, this was excellent. Would recommend this hotel.

you are planning a trip to the North Island of New Zealand, make sure you spare time to go and visit White Island. White Island is the only active marine volcano in New Zealand (a suprising fact given the sysmic activity in the country), and is a truely AWESOME sight. Situated about 50km off the north east coast of New Zealand it can be accessed by Helicopter or charter boat (the boat is much cheaper, but can be pretty unpleasent if the swells are up). The island itself is just the top of the main crater, under the surface the volcano drops straight down to the ocean floor. The volcano is estimated to be between 100,000 and 200,000 years old. However, the small portion of the island that is visible above sea level has been in its present form for an estimated 16,000 years.

The island is home to a large Garnet colony and as it is a restricted fishing zone, is also teeming with sea life.

Walking tours of the island are a must, the huge steaming cliffs rising above your head, the ground which is so hot you can feel it through your shoes, roaring fumaroles spewing out sulpheric acid and creating feilds of yellow, red and green sulpher crystals. There is also a giant acid lake where the main crater used to be (a very recent eruption), and forests of skeleton trees.

The island was once home to an ill fated mining venture, which was wiped out in an eruption and landslide, but whos ruins still remain.

On the trip over keep and eye out for dolphins and whales (depending on the time of year), and for the really game, go diving down to under water caves and vents.

Overall a fantastic experience, and well worth the cost no matter what your budget.

Boat tours are operated by Pee Jays Charters.

This is a centrally located hotel in Whakatane, within walking distance of much of the town, with beautiful rooms. We had a friendly cat hang around our room, and enjoyed our stay even though Cyclone Ivy visited for most of the time. Has a really nice cafe with delicious coffee!!
