Owner description: After more than 130 years away, Mataatua Wharenui - New Zealand's only repatriated and most travelled Maori meeting house - stands once again as the unifying soul of the Ngati Awa (one of the Maori tribes of the Bay of Plenty) New Zealand. Built in 1875, it travelled to Sydney, Melbourne, Victoria & Albert Museum and South Kensington Museum (London), Dunedin and Otago (South Island) before being rebuilt back in its place of origin, Whakatane, in 2011. Your journey at Mataatua (The Face of God) will Ignite the Soul within, as you discover the extraordinary story of the house that has travelled through time. Mataatua is a living and breathing being and our experience provides an opportunity for intimate engagement with the people of Ngati Awa. Be enthralled as the carvings and legends of Ngati Awa are brought to life through world-class digital technology. A spine tingling experience, HIKO; Legends Carved in Light, is the 2011 GOLD Nga Aho award winner from the New Zealand Designers Institute.

“Great insights into the house that came home”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2014

Love the story of Mataatua - and the team really brought this alive for us. We learned new stories and got a new appreciation of the building and its people.

“very personal and educational experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 12, 2014

We learned a lot at this location. The people were very nice, helpful and professional. You can tell they are knowledgeable and take pride in what they do. The marae is beautifully restored and the new buildings compliment it well. It is a very nice facility. The laser show was very entertaining and a great combination of story telling of the history with modern technology. I recommend this to anyone that has an interest in learning about other cultures from a truly educational standpoint. It was not touristy. This was the best Maori cultural experience we had on the island.

“A welcoming place with a memorable story”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 4, 2014

The staff at the visitor centre are so warm and welcoming, telling the history of the meeting house and showing a video with more detail about its travels. Definitely worth taking the time to see. Thanks for telling us more about your culture and beautiful part of the world.

“Loved it!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2014

The Mataatua whare has an amazing history and it was a real pleasure to watch it come home. I recently hosted an event at the site and found the staff to be awesome and the venue well appointed. Getting to see the Mataatua Experience was well worthwhile, too. No hesitation in recommending!

A great experience with skilled guides. An experience that felt genuine and in which the meaning of manaakitanga was demonstrated. Kia ora.
