“Amazing experience, unique and exciting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 1, 2013

On the cruiser trip on the way to the Island we sighted common dolphin, gannets and mutton birds. We transferred at sea to a pontoon boat and then to the island. We were guided right to the crater edges, past steam and gases (we were wearing gas masks and hard hats). There were lots of bright yellow sulphur deposits and the remains of a mining operation. There is a gannet breeding colony on the side of the island unaffected by the volcano. A once in a lifetime experience wandering a live marine volcano.

“One of new Zealands best natural attractions”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2013

This active volcano is far more impressive than the volcanic attractions at Rotorua (90 minutes drive away from Whakatane)
The island can only be accessed with licensed tour guides. The boat trip leaves from Whakatane daily and takes about 1 1/2 hours to reach the island.Helicopters also offer trips but at a much higher price.
We took the 6 hour trip with Pee Jay Tours at Whakatane .It cost $200NZD each but we think it was well worth it.(a packed lunch is included)The bonus was seeing the pods of dolphins on the way out to & back from the island.

“White Island 'WOW'”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 10, 2013

WOW what can you say about this experience, it is unlike anything I have experienced before.

I must say straight up now there is an extended boat trip involved here and if you are suseptable to getting sea sick the chances are you will. The day we went it was rough with a 3 metre beam on swell and half those on the boat were throwing up on the back deck - we went on the smaller of the 2 vessels PeeJay 4 and I would say it is not the friendliest of passenger boats, comfort wise but they do have a larger vessel in service PeeJay 5. My wife joined those out the back throwing up but she was also getting drenched with salt water at the same time. (the staff were obviously used to this and helped all the unfortunate ones)

The company does have a policy that if they don't land you on the island you don't pay so rest ashored they will almost anything to get you there. When we arived the landing jetty was washed away in a storm the day before so we had to be landed on the beach with swells breaking on the beach - quite adventurous really but I did feel for those less agile.

Once on the island we were blasted with volcanic grit as it was still blowing 35 kts - but don't be put off it was all worth it. We were given gas masks because of the sulphur smell. Because the volcano has blown before there was no long hike up to the crater you were right there in amoungst it all the vent holes with plumes of gasses escaping, the boiling lake and the eerie sulphur coloured rocks. The crew gave us a well rehersed history of the island and its activities and what reseach is being carried out which filled in a lot of gaps.

A once in a lfetime experience - I would suggest that if you suffer from sea sickness you take the helicopter service over to the island.

“White Island North Island N.Z.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 8, 2013

This is certainly not a cheap trip but if you can afford a special treat then this is it. We took a Helipro helicopter trip which picked us up from our small hotel, then flew us overland and out to sea, eventually landing on White Island approx. an hour later. Our pilot acted as our guide and was most informative.
The tour of this active volcanic island lasts approx. an hour and is truly amazing as you walk over hot water rivulets, see bubbling pools of mud, vents issuing clouds of steam and eventually you reach the rim of the crater and look into a cauldron of boiling water. The sights and sounds are quite other worldly and words do little justice to the whole experience. It is certainly the most incredible experience of my lifetime.
On our return to the mainland we landed on the summit of Mount Tarawera, which was blown apart by a volcanic explosion over a hundred years ago, and sat in awe looking at what nature can do. The colours of the rocks and earth are spectacular. We were happy to sit there for ages and drink in the sights and surrounding scenery. It was the end of an incredibly memorable trip.
Remember to wear sensible shoes and note there are no toilet facilities, food or water available. Take your own. It's a three hour trip.
