Owner description: A full day tour to the remote and magnificent Northern Coromandel. Pickup in Coromandel town, and travel up the pohutukawa-fringed coast road. There is a full commentary. Look out for dolphins and orca! Then start your 10km (3-4hr) walk on the Coromandel Coastal Walkway, where the views are breathtaking. You are met at the end of your walk with refreshments, maybe have a swim, then you are driven back to Coromandel town. There is also a shorter 3km walk down a ridge-line and along the glorious Port Jackson beach - or you can just stay on the bus for the scenic drive! We own and operate Breakaway B&B if you want somewhere to stay

“A terrific day with a decent walk made very accessible.”

Coromandel Discovery Day Trip: The Coromandel Coastal Walkway. Following the recommendation of a friend, this seemed like a good way to walk a scenic track only once - they drop you off at one end and pick you up at the other. As we were staying in Whitianga, we drove across to the rendezvous point in Coromandel town to meet the minibus. Guide and driver Barbara was brilliant: she offered information and insights on the landscape and the environment as she drove along. This was an early point in our NZ trip so the orientation she provided on conservation work (which we later revisited in other places) was really of value. She is also great fun and has loads of stories - this is not a lecture tour! The winding and steep gravel roads are of course interesting (!!) although we were completely confident of our driver and vehicle.

The walk was great, we loved it. Many birds presented themselves including gannet, NZ kingfisher, tui, bellbird. It was our good fortune to be there on a beautiful sunny day in spring, with blue and turquoise all around us in the sea and the sky. And it was quiet as well, a bonus. Reaching Stony Bay was rewarded with home made cake and tea/coffee magicked up by Barbara.

Well worth our organised and early start from Whitianga, we still had time for a proper evening back there, which would definitely not have been the case under our own steam (diesel, actually) with twice the 3-4 hour walk and driving speeds in the hired vehicle lowered by our unfamiliarity! A terrific day, highly recommended.

“Great trip even in winter”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2013

Just returned from this trip with Barbara. We are well travelled NZrs within our own country and highly recommend this tour. The road to the tip of the Coromandel does not continue right the way round and is only accessible to the "connecting" road via the walking track. Coromandel Discovery Tours picks you up at your accommodation, takes you to the start of the walkway and picks you up at the other end. Walk takes 3-4hrs around a stunningly beautiful coastline. Track is in excellent condition even at this time of the year. About an 8hr day (takes around 1.5 - 2hrs to get to the start of the track) and the same back (of course :) Barbara is an excellent driver and we felt very safe on the narrow and winding non sealed roads.

“Beautiful views and bright blue clear skies made this very special”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 6, 2013

A lovely day of walking the top of the Coromandel Peninsula.
Like others (below) we used Barbara from Coromandel Discovery as you can't take your car and do need to be picked up. The price perhaps seems a little steep but having witnessed the roads - and it does take the whole day - it is a fair cost.
I would NOT recommend walking it both ways unless you are a sucker for a long walk.
Barbara has lots of stories to tell and knows the locals. We started at Fletcher Bay after a delicious morning coffee at Colville.
The walk took about 3 hours with no rush - it was a very hot day - and she met us at Stony Bay with well deserved tea and and cake.
My only disappointment with the walk was that there was no chill-out shady spot with a view for us to sit down and enjoy our picnic lunch.
It is a pretty narrow path almost all the way. On shady days you could do this at the SEAT / bench half way - but in the full sun it was just too hot for us.
Non walkers note that there are a few steep climbs in the first half but nothing over strenuous.
Beautiful views and bright blue clear skies (after all it was NZ's sunniest, longest, driest summer ever recorded!) made this very special.
Definitely recommended for those that enjoy quiet walks and great views.

“A magical walk”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 29, 2013

This is a great day out. We were lucky to have perfect weather. Michael collected us in a minibus from our B&B and we were joined by four others. The drive up to the top of the Coromandel Peninsula is very scenic and Michael pointed out things of interest. The walk starts from Fletcher Bay. It's not a difficult walk although the hill out of Poley Bay is long and steep. The walk took my wife and I (fit 60 somethings) just under 4 hours with plenty of stops along the way. The first half of the walk is very open with magnificent ocean views. The second half is mostly through forest and just as enjoyable. Michael met us at Stony Bay with tea and cake before the drive back to Coromandel. This would be a very relaxing and healthy weekend escape from Auckland. I thoroughly recommend the walk and Coromandel Discovery.

“Coromandel Coastal Walkway Tour”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 18, 2013

We thoroughly enjoyed this day tour around the scenic tip of the Coromandel Peninsula. Because of rough roads, it's not possible to drive rental cars to the start of the Coromandel Walkway trek so we went with Barbara of Coromandel Discovery. She was an excellent driver and tour guide and provided us with lots of interesting info about the Peninsula and the hike (we especially liked the "singing" bird cards she showed us of birds and their songs that we were likely to encounter on the hike). She dropped us off at Stony Bay and drove around to meet us at Fletcher Bay (with coffee and cake). The hike was very scenic and not too difficult and we had plenty of time before meeting back with Barbara. Definitely recommended.
