“One man's vision”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 7, 2013 via mobile

After teaching for two terms Barry Brickell decided teaching wasn't for him (wise man) and decided to make his living as a potter. To cut a long story short, having bought a piece of land on which to live and work and for practical reasons, he began to create his own 15 inch gauge railway studying and learning the necessary engineering as he went along.

Over thirty years later the engines and carriages Barry has designed and built, and the track he has personally laid take visitors on a wonderful hour long journey through replanted native forest and past quirky artwork created by Barry himself or fellow artists.

The view from The EyeFull Tower at the top of the hill, across the hills and sea is wonderful and would be worth the journey alone. However, it is the endearing quality of this venture and the enthusiasm of the employees that makes this place so special. Special thanks go to Paul, our train driver, for his friendly, interested and enthusiastic attitude which helped make this visit so special for us.

“Quintessential Coromandel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 1, 2013

When you get to know The Coromandel Peninsua, a place like this is exactly what you'd expect to find. A fabulous history, great entertainment and something a little bit quirky. It is a must do when on the Peninsula!

“Quirky, fun”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2013

A pleasant way to spend an hour or so in this area. Quirky little railway, hand built by the owner, as was the whole track. Interesting commentary. Not got the wow factor but still good.

“Trains for old & young”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2013

I'm not a huge train person, but this place is exceptional, & whilst it would thrill children, its also a great experience for adults too. Even on weekdays the trains are completely booked & understandably so. The work on the trains, the lines, the bush, the artwork along the way, its just a unique experience. They have so much to be proud of & will do for a long time to come, as the future of the DCR is a committment to the native bush & to returning it to its former glory.
