“Pleasant Surprise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

10 of us spent 2 nights here during a tour through Colombia. The rooms were very nice, the food at the restaurant was good and the beer was cheap. The grounds are lovely with a large pond and a another little wet area near the community center. What we really liked was the setting along a small stream. The hotel has an intrepretive center for hummingbirds, a small butterfly conservatory and a forest walk with many tropical plants especially orchids.
The grounds are a good place to go bird watching especailly for hummingbirds which come to the feeders at the interpretive center which is located across the stream and up the river. Our guide was a wonderful young women naturalist who even though she didn't speak English was still able to communicate quite well.
If you are ever in Manizales and you love nature this is the place for you. It is only a short ride to downtown or the airport.

I client who wanted to show me the best places of Manizales took me here for lunc. I was very impressed by the entrance of the hotel and there is no doubt the surroundings are beautiful. It’s a very relaxing hotel with a typical view of the coffee farms from the coffee area in Colombia (Quindio, Caldas, Risaralda). I was greeted by the hotel staff that kindly walked me over to the restaurant. I was fascinated with the view and the place itself, Until I got to the dining room. The tables were very unappealing and average covered with a simple table cloth. The chairs used are the average chairs use for conventions, the ones you get on big quantity for a cheap price. I don’t understand why you would have this plain artless set up in a small room as the restaurant of such a beautiful facility. The server was great and very knowledgeable of the items on the menu. As I was a guest I didn’t want to go with a complicated option. So I went for the Grilled Chicken on the menu. I thought that would be the easiest option. Big mistake. The chicken came completely raw. It did not come undercooked, It was raw. I have never been someone who would complain at the table, especially when I am the guest of someone who is hosting a lunch for me trying to impress me. So I didn’t say anything but left the full chicken breast on the plate, making them aware in the kitchen of their big mistake. They came and picked up the plates and no one even asked if there was something wrong with the chicken. Even thou the full raw breast was there.
I recommend this place to go and spend and afternoon and look at the panoramic and walk around. I would never recommend the restaurant. They can not deliver the product that they want to charge for. The prices are average for a good restaurant in Manizales. But usually when you pay these prices the quality of the food and service are outstanding. Chicken is one of the most dangerous meats that could get bacteria when not being prepared correctly or cooked properly.

Room Tip: Beautiful view and experience of typical farms from the region.

I just spent a week at this lovely jewel of a resort in the small town of Manizales in central Colombia. I was there with a friend who I had met in grad school, and she invitied me to travel with her in Colombia for a month. We have stayed at a number of hotels, eco-resorts, small town pensions, but this was a definite high-point! The hotel entrance is a little hard to find; it is easy to drive past it on a road where there are many factories. But once inside the gate, the place is a jewel and highly serene. The hotel is a series of one-story buildings with very comfortable rooms, and many out buildings for the restaurant, meetings and such. The grounds are vast, and they have been repurposed to be a place of tranquility, serenity and nature. There are orchid forests, a butterfly house, and many, many birds in the cloud forest. 16,000 ft volcanis peaks ring the town and make the hotel feel like a magic kingdom. We went on an early morning bird watching hike with a guide, and learned an amazing amount about the myriad of birds that are both year-round resident as well as migratory. There are a couple of interesting animals as well in pens, including one of the most friendly ostriches I have ever met! She followed me up and down the fence, and would engage in some sort of display ritual from time to time that was very unusual and intriguing. The hotel is also a research and teaching facility for Juan Valdez coffee, so you can guess that the coffee that they serve is excellent.

The town of Manizels is home to several universities, so there are excellent restaurants and much night life. No roads in Manizeles go straight or stay level!

If you find yourself in the Manizales area and need a place to stay, please make an effort to stay here.

Room Tip: Any room is likely to be excellent.

This hotel is in the outbound of Manizales but withing a short cab ride to the very downtown. It is special for nature lovers, peace seekers and in general for people not in the party mood. Hotel is a peaceful place surrounded by a natural park so have your trekking shoes ready to walk on the different trails there are available for recreation. Your must be accompanied by a local guide (cost per person is about US$ 9), have your camera ready for the butterfly nursery and the mist forest. It is a experience that worth the visit.

This is a great choice for nature lovers like us. You will need to take an easy bus or taxi into town from here. But we didn't care because it's prettier here than in town and all activities (trips to Los Nevados, etc) can be easily arrqnged from here. Desk staff, particularly Orlando who speaks English, but also Wilson who doesn't, were extremely helpful to us in every way. Rooms are nicely modern upscale feeling. Flat screen tv, english cnn, great wi fi in halls and lobbies. Sparkling new bathrooms with great showers.
Very good food in the charmless restsurant. Lovely nature trail on property. Highly recommend early am bird tour with reisdent guide Julian who is excellent. At the moment more employees than guests here it seems! So go now - they deserve and need your business. And did I say that the restaurant svice was super efficient, helpful, friendly and patient with our bad Spanish? Especially Antonio and Carlos

This hotel is certainly worth a visit, we especially enjoyed the nice environment but particularly were enchanted by the medicinal gardens (ask for Camillo to guide), the butterfly nursery, the orchideas in the wild, the small zoological garden with recued animals!
In short, a visit worthwile for a short or longer break
