Such a relaxing vacation! Very mellow compared to party-central Mexico. Here's the breakdown:
CLIENTELE: This is definitely a FAMILY resort. Kids and babies galore. Not the most romantic place, but there’s an adults-only side for those looking for more quiet. The average age range there was approximately 40 and over. (Note that the pool on the adult side is backyard-sized and the beach is much smaller than on the family side.)
LOCATION: The resort is in Vieux Fort in the southernmost part of the island. The North is about 2 hours away by car and Soufrière is about 45 minutes away. Don’t fret about being so close to the airport – only 4 or 5 planes take off per day and always between 4:15 and 4:30pm. Therefore no constant air traffic to ruin your serenity. Plus it’s wonderful to only have a 3-minute drive to the hotel!
ROOM: About 250 rooms on the family side. The usual kitschy beach décor, but clean and comfortable. Plenty of storage. All rooms are oceanfront, but I would venture to say that most don’t have an actual ocean view because of the palm trees. Our room was on the 3rd floor and we could only catch a glimpse of the ocean. We requested and got a king-sized bed, while our 5-year-old daughter slept on a sofa bed. Note that if you have very young children, the bathroom is only equipped with a smallish shower (not sure if this is the case in every room though). The A/C was rather loud, but it did drown out the sound of our noisy neighbours. The problem was the doors between connecting rooms. The first week we had very considerate neighbours, but a loudmouth family moved in for our last 3 days and they acted like they were all alone at home! Not the hotel’s fault of course, just bad luck. One last thing: if you don’t like falling asleep to the sound of chirping frogs, bring earplugs. Personally I found them quite soothing. Similar to the sounds of a white-noise machine basically.
BEACH: Small and lovely, but not exactly an endless deep stretch of pure white sand like you’d see in Mexico or the Dominican. That being said, the average number of people on the beach on any given day was about 10 people – including us!!! It’s very quiet which suited us just fine. No party people, no annoying staff constantly trying to get you to play games, no motorized sports. Just the sound of the ocean and a delicious breeze. Fewer people also means that you never have to wake up at 6am to go put towels on loungers to save them! There were always free chairs at the beach and pool no matter what time of the day you got there. I should mention that there is seaweed. However, even though I despise seaweed with a passion, this type was different. More like small blades of grass floating around, not the long slimy stuff. So I actually didn’t mind it at all. A tractor would regularly scoop it up during the day. There’s a reef to the left of the beach, but snorkellers were disappointed as there were no fish. Not many waves due to a man-made rock barrier, so swimming is easy for young children.
POOL: Large, clean, wide sloped entry at one end, fountain in the middle with a platform where kids can play, plenty of chairs, and a swim-up bar with numerous non-alcoholic choices for the kiddies – and no watered-down drinks for the adults!
WATER SLIDES: Only two. One is easier and popular with younger children (typical twisty kind that’s not too fast). The other is a black hole tunnel. Note that there is also a lazy river which is quite relaxing.
FOOD: Typical “all-inclusive” buffet food. Definitely not gourmet dining. Good variety though. Nightly carving station. Children’s corner. Once a week, they serve dinner under the stars. Tables are set up around the pool area and food stations are set up on the lawn. Live music on stage during and after the meal. As for lunch, you can eat at the buffet restaurant (no bathing suits) or at a fast-food restaurant by the pool where you can keep your swimming attire.
CHECK-IN: Very warm welcome. Plenty of smiles and a delicious rum punch awaited us (orange juice for our daughter). Quick, efficient, no issues whatsoever.
SHOWS: There are always musicians or a singer in the lobby lounge during and after dinner (kids love to dance there). I liked the fact that there weren’t big shows on the main stage every night, which allowed for the occasional early bedtime. When there were shows, they were small-scale but entertaining. They consisted mainly of local singers, dancers, fire-eaters, etc. The best show was entirely devoted to Caribbean dancing and gave us a colourful glimpse of traditional dances from various islands.
GROUNDS AND WALKING: No need for golf carts or shuttles here! The pool area is in front of the rooms and the beach is right after. Figure no more than a 2-minute walk to get to the beach (if that). The grounds are well-maintained, but there’s not much space for elaborate landscaping.
KIDS CLUB: My daughter didn’t try it, but it seemed well-organized. Their building is offset from the main public area. It boasts a large fenced-in playground and play structure, as well as huge trees for plenty of shade.
RESORT CREDIT: If you stay 7 nights or more, you are given resort credit, i.e. 50$ at the gift shop (excluding alcohol and tobacco), 50$ on any excursion (see agency in lobby), 75$ at the spa, and another 75$ to be used on a room upgrade, paintball or another go at the spa. We used all of it of course!
In the end, I would recommend this resort to families looking for a fun but quieter vacation than what you usually see at large all-inclusives. We would definitely go back.
