“Great Vacation for 2”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 1, 2013

Booked this vacation thru Central Travel flying out of Detroit to Atlanta to St Lucia. All went well and were pleased with the 5 min ride from airport to hotel. Stayed Jan. 14 thru 21. Our room was on the Harmony side 3 doors from the lobby on the ground floor. At first we were concerned that it would be noisy, had 2 beds and not the king that we wanted and was on the gound floor when we wanted higher. All turned out well and we were close to everything and very pleased with the room. Food was good at the buffet and Asian. Could have been better service and food at the other 2 specialty rest. Hired a private tour of the island with Luden as our driver. Very good day and viseted most of the sites of the island. Probably will not repeat this destination but would recommend this resort to anyone. Staff makes this resort outstanding.

My dad and me came from France to get better in Kitesurf. We found what we wanted:

- The Kitesurf School: a great place at half a mile from the resort by the beach. A very good equipment (Kitesurf, Windsurf, Paddle Board) in a laid back beach house. A container is available to stock safely your equipment. A great wood-deck to take a great rest after exhausting sessions.

- The Spot: a flat area protected from the waves by the reef (if you like waves you can go beyond the reef). The west wind is always strong enough and when if you're kite falls in the water you'll always land and the south east oriented beach.

-The Team: Great! Professional, available, nice, fun, dynamic... A band of 4 young Portuguese who know each others since 20 years. For the classes they always give you good and progressive advice between two exercises. They're always encouraging and congratulating you. After the classes you can really feel the difference. If you kite falls or if you're loosing your board the will arrive in 2 minutes with a zodiac to help you.

- The Resort: A Former 'Club Med'. It is very family-friendly with a lot of think to do for the kids. A self (quite american style) and 3 restaurant (Italian, Caribbean, Asian) not excellent but ok. The staff is extremely nice and the enormous lobby will allow you to check you e-mails in a fresh and shaded place.

We spent the first week of January at the resort and it was great. We were a total of 15people and never had an issue with accommodating us. The hotel is yes a little dated but they are working on that, food was very good and something different every night. The rooms are comfortable but you are only there to sleep. The grounds are clean, pool is clean. All in all it was great time and I would do it again, the next time it would be for two weeks. The staff are very good, always smiling. The staff were all good but there were two of them that we're great, first was Ozie at the bar, she had always a smile and was always eager to make that special drink. She would remember every drink so whenever she seen me coming it was done. If all of them would be as she was it would of been even better. CHEERS to Ozie. Next you need to look for Marcellous, he is great guy always wanting to help and always asking to get you a drink. He even taught us ow to carry four beers at once. Ask for these two and you will see how wonderful they are. I would definitely refer this resort to all, worth the money. Hope to go back next year.

Just back from coconut bay,no problems with the hotel ,room and food it's all there you want for nothing.what I want to mention ,we hired a car from Avis based at the hotel,on a trip to soufriere witch is a must, this part of the island for me was the best with the pitons as the back drop amazing viewes,in soufriere we were approached by a few locals offering to be are guide,me bieing me quickly shrugged this off with a no thank you, after a walk around this lovely town we asked a local police man for directions to the botanical gardens when the first guy who asked to be a guide came in on the convosation he was knowen to the police man we were talking to and he assured me that Dennis was a good and trust worthy guy,we done the deal and I hired Dennis to be are guide ,what a result with Dennis we covered more attractions that day that we would on are own,Dennis was knowen every place we visited, and he was a mind of information and knowlage, some thing I did not hear other guides doing,so the reason I am writing this is to big up Dennis if you are in soufriere and he approaches you don't be wiery this man is worth every ec dollar you will pay him,he is around 35 stubble beard and one of his front teeth missing, you will recognise him.a great guy and trust worthy.

This hotel is definitely a good 4* HOTEL, great food in both the buffet and al a carte and the good thing is you can dine there as many times as you can during your stay. The staff were great and the hotel was clean. The hotel is close to the airport which is great for families literally a 5 min transfer, but dont think you will be hearing the constant sound of planes, we only heard 3/4 in a week. The hotel does look a bit tired and needs a lick of paint. But we would definitely go back.

Room Tip: A ground floor room with families are good.

My wife, 4 year old daughter and myself spent one week at Coconut Bay Resort. This was our first time there and also in St-Lucia. Last year, we spent one week in Antigua. We booked this trip with Air Canada Vacations via a travel agent.

TRAVEL, TRANSPORTATION & CHECK-IN
Travel time is about 5½ hours from Toronto Airport – Arrival at St-Lucia is about the same as any other Caribbean Island as airports are small. The great thing about Coconut Bay Resort is it’s located less than 5 minutes from the airport. Check-in at the hotel is easy, with a welcome drink available for all of us, even our daughter.

ROOM
We had a room on the 4th floor where we were told rooms were "renovated" in the last year. Also, our travel agent told us that the view to the ocean was amazing… This is quite debatable as the “Ocean View” is in fact a “PARTIAL Ocean View” – If you have to pay substantially more to get this view, I don’t believe it’s worth it; luckily we had the upgrade for free. Rooms are yes, renovated with new furniture, flat screen TV and fresh paint, but that is about it. Mattress is very hard and one detail that strikes me is that there is no chair or sofa in the room – the only option is to sit on the bed: a bit awkward sometimes.

Furthermore, the 2 chairs on the balcony are the cheapest ones you can find at the dollar store and very uncomfortable with a cheap small table – If we had something different, my wife & I would have spent a few more hours at night on the balcony looking at the amazing sky full of stars… Bathroom is ok – but if you’re the kind of person who dreams about a hot water shower, you will be disappointed, water is lukewarm at best in the shower.

RESORT / POOL / BEACH
These vacations were focused on our 4 year old daughter so we made a conscious decision to have a resort vacation and not do any daytrips outside the resort… The main pool is large and fun for a 4 year old as it is not deeper than about 1 meter. The pool has different sections including waterfalls and swim up bar; it was just perfect for our daughter. Then you have the lazy river which is fun for everybody especially for a 4 year old. There is also a water slide which could bore any teenager after a few days, but for us and our daughter it was also perfect.

There is also the “CoCo Club” for kids, where you have play yard, a mini waterpark with different water features and games – at the club, there are also different activities for kids; we went with our daughter for 2 activities: jewelry craft & coconut painting and she really enjoy them – they were not too long and were simple. Finally, as for the beach, the resort is located on the East Atlantic side and surf could be rough – perfect if you want to kite surf, but for us, it was our decision to spend time in the pool…

FOOD
This is where Coconut Bay Resort is losing stars and is falling off the cliff… Agreed it is an all-inclusive formula and our expectations shouldn’t be too high…. Call us naïve, our expectation were higher than what we got. There is a main restaurant – buffet style – where you have breakfast, lunch and where you could get most of your dinners – breakfast are ok - somedays better than others, but it didn’t made us go WOW…

For lunch, it is about the same with a few exceptions when it was good and sometimes it was not that good.

For dinner, I was hoping to taste great fish from the area served simply, but every time they had fish on the buffet, it was breaded, overcooked, deep-fried or just simply overcooked – one exception: one night, they had the mahi-mahi wellington with goat cheese and it was probably the best dish of our stay. Also, the Saturday night, it is Caribbean night and they served the buffet outside beside the pool and perform some sort of show with steel drums – they got it that night!; a few dishes at the buffet were very good…

We had dinner at the Italian restaurant one night, the food is a bit better, but menu choice is still limited. You also have the choice of a Caribbean or an Asian restaurant which we didn’t try as the menus didn’t really inspire us.

GENERAL
One important comment about the resort in general as I mentioned to my wife while we were there, is that it is a loud and noisy resort. Whether it is the music, the DJ or anything else, it is difficult to find a spot where it is quiet and you can relax, at least on the Splash side, even if you are travelling with children, you still want some “down” time and the entertainment is loud late into the evening, even when you are in your room …

Another factor is that the resort seems to have some sort of identity crisis – let me explain: some of the most popular sunny destinations are certainly Hawaii, Jamaica & Mexico – those destinations know who they are and have their own identity, their own style – they don’t pretend or try to copy another style and their clientele appreciate that and go to those specific destinations for that reason: you don’t go to Mexico and expect a luau or you don’t go to Jamaica and hope for a great Mexican dinner… So why is Coconut Bay trying to copy those other destinations? People are going to St. Lucia, to the Caribbean, for the Caribbean experience… Just a thought !

Room Tip: Room on the 4th floor are renovated - The Splash side is loud, but the Adult side have a very small...

Good day and thank you for taking the time to share your comments on your stay with us at Coconut Bay. We are pleased thay you enjoyed the majority of your stay and are thankful for your comments in areas in which you feel we could continue to improve. Its important for me to point out that all of our rooms are full ocean facing and that the fourth floor especially has sweeping full views of the Atlantic Ocean...the only obstruction to these views would be the occasional coconut palm tree. There are no buildings or other view obstructions from this vantage point. Your comments on the patio furniture are appreciated and as we are approximately 1/3 of the way through the rooms with changing these out and the project continues. We are thrilled that your family enjoyed our pools and slides, they are a source of endless fun for so many families.
I apologize if you did not find the food selections to your liking. And it is unfortunate you did not dine in our two best restaurnats; Calabash and Silk. It is important to note that our guests predominantly come from the UK, Canada and the United States. There are alot of palettes and personal preferences to satsify. Its not so much an identity crisis as giving the majority what they are expecting. Our buffet has a 14 day roation schedule for dinner so that we can appeal to all and not repeat our dinner menu during your stay.

Once again the team and I would like to thank you for comments and your stay and we hope to see you again down here in paradise

Cheers!

We just returned from Coconut Bay yesterday with our 4 and 2 year old and had an amazing time. We already miss it! What a lovely resort and gorgeous island. We can't wait to go back.

For the kids - my 4 year old was in heaven! She had a blast on the waterslide, lazy river, pool, splash pad etc. The kids club was amazing for her, and also for my 2 year old. The scheduled activites kept her busy and totally entertained. From a tent camp-out, to games, painting, movie night, dinner with the Kids Club and even baking cookies, she woke up everyday wondering what fun was in store for that day. The staff were incredible and treated each child like gold. They knew her by name and said Hi to her whenever they saw her around the resort. They truly made her feel special.
For my son, the kids club/daycare was a lifesaver. He didn't adjust so well over the first few days of our trip, so we brought him to the daycare (all day) for the last 3 days. He had a great time there and was definitely taken care of. A huge thank you to the kids club staff, especially Nasha and Auntie. Our son ended up really enjoying himself and so did we with some 'free time and relaxation". We also booked a babysitter one night and felt truly comfortable with that since it was a kids club staff member who had already gotten to know him at the daycare.

There were a ton of kids and families at this resort, so if that is your situation, the kids will have a blast and you won't feel bad if your child starts crying, or running or being silly etc.

Food - the food was delicious! There was a different theme every night which made for a nice variety and not the same buffet food everyday. We also ate at the Italian restaurant, which wasn't the greatest, so we just went to the buffet after. Our only 'complaint" would be the fact that the buffet did not open for dinner until 6:30pm. This is way too late for a 4 and 2 year old to eat, they were pretty cranky by dinner time. The nice thing though, was the beach grill was open all day and 'made to order". So you can always go up and order a burger, hot dog, wraps, salads etc. if you're hungry.

Rooms - the rooms were standard.. nice and big, but nothing special. We had a bit of trouble with the shower turning off 'mid-shower'.. but not a big deal. Also, there are no bathtubs, so I had to wash my young kids standing up.. but again, no big deal.

Location - so convenient being only 5 minutes from the airport! We did see one or two planes take off through the day, but the noise was not a bother and only lasted about 1 minute per flight.

Pool/ Waterslide/ River - 2 large pools and one was perfect for the kids - it had a shallow play area with a fountain etc. The lazy river was nice as well. The waterslides were also a ton of fun. We could go with the kids down the open waterslide (4 and 2 year old), so they had a blast. The tube slide is single rider only, so the kids did not go down that one.. but didn't mind.

The pool was never extremely busy, so we always got a lounge chair, no matter what time of day. I don't know if we just picked a slower week, but it was so nice to not have to get up at 5:00am to put our towels on a chair! The beach was also always open with lounge chairs as well.

Beach - as mentioned in other reviews, the beach is not amazing. It was nice though, and the kdis had fun playing in the sand, but we definitely did not have a desire to take them in the ocean. Way too choppy and alot of seaweed. I thought they did a good job clearing the seaweed on the beach though, so it really was not a major issue. The tractor went through about 2-3 times a day.

Weather - weather was perfect! It is pretty windy in the morning, but once the sun starts shining, the wind is a beautiful compliment.. we never got too hot. It rained for about 5-10 minutes on 2 of the days, but it cleared out very quickly.

Excursion - we went on an excurtion, but would not recommend it with young kids. My 2 year old got car sick (very curvey roads) and overall it was just too much work with young kids. I would suggest enjoying the resort instead.

Credits - To our surprise, we also had credits at the spa and gift shop. That was such a nice treat!

Overall, we had a great time and definitely want to go back in a couple of years. Thanks again to the wonderful and friendly staff who made our trip so enjoyable.

Room Tip: Ask for a ground floor if you have kids. This way, you can sit outside on a lounge chair on the gras...
