“A Perfect Picture Post Card of Brighton”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2013

I lived in Brighton for some years, many years ago.Last year,I decided I would like to spend a couple of nights in the town with my teenage son.I had narrowed the choice of "boutique" hotels down to half a dozen or so,and then, quite by chance, happened across the Bow Street Runner.I was struck by the number of extremely positive reviews. We made a room reservation for January Ist. and 2nd..
From the moment we arrived,we were made to feel very much at home. Our room had twin beds,as requested. The room, and it's facilities, were well thought out, clean, and well maintained throughout our stay.We both relaxed into our new surroundings in no time at all.
The Bow Street is run by Sue and her able team,Liz and Warren.Liz does an excellent job of keeping the rooms spic and span, while Sue, with the help of Warren, runs a wonderful little pub downstairs.I'm not much of a pub person these days, mainly because I don't like the way many of them have been "modernised".The Bow Street is very different to the average modern pub.It has oodles of charm, wonderful characters as regulars,an old style pub,a proper Brighton local! Another plus,is a well chosen and very reasonably priced wine list.
The rooms are accessed by a separate entrance to the pub.The pub does not intrude in any way on the accommodation. It would be perfectly possible to stay upstairs, oblivious to the bar below. In my view,to do so would be a huge mistake. The Bow Street offers something very special.Comfortable, well priced, and well located accommodation. On top of this, the visitor has the the chance to experience an authentic and welcoming local community.
Over the years,Brighton has changed. In my view, not necessarily for the best.I'm pleased to see that the spirit of the Brighton that I knew many years ago,is still very much alive and well at The Bow Street Runner.Bravo!!

Oh my god what a lovely pub, with friendly staff and nice clean rooms! Old school character, open fire, the best swivelling bar stools known to man, worth a visit for the stools alone!
Perfectly located in the heart of Brighton & Hove.
A traditional classic! You couldn't ask for more from a backstreet boozer!

What a find this little place is. There are just three rooms and our room was just perfect. We had room number 2, it is small and cosy and has everything you could need. Very clean, warm, very comfortable beds with lovely white bed linen. The small en suite shower room is also a little small but has a good shower and was spotlessly clean.

The pub which is below the rooms is great if you want a nice drink in a traditional pub, very friendly and a place where you will be welcomed.

Sue the landlady is great, she provided a very nice light breakfast. I will definitely stay here again. The location is perfect too. Great little place to stay.

We stayed here for two nights.
There is everything you need here. It's in a good location with little noise past 11 o'clock at night.
The rooms are small, at the expense of big beds which is a good thing.
Everywhere was clean, no complaints at all.
I would definitely recommend staying here.

Just returned from a 2 night break in Brighton, we booked this b&b on the good reviews and we were glad we did, on arrival we were met in the bar and our bags taken to the room, on asking about parking as it's a typical city and congested we wre given 2 nights resident parking permit so we could park anywhere in close proximity. The pub it'self is the smallest i have ever seen and is just used by the locals, no music, no tv just old fellas having a chat and the room was spotless and as clean as you would like it, there is no food available so you get milk and orange juice in the room frige and cerials on the shelf as well as pastries, jam and fruit in the room. Sue who is the owner is lovely and cant do enough for you and for £60 per night you cant go wrong.

A great little (locals) pub with three rooms above. The rooms are very clean and although a little small have been tastefullly furnished without clutter. The owners provide a warm welcome and a breakfast is provide in the room with milk for the tea in a small fridge. Parking which is such a nightmare in Brighton is covered by purchase of a residents pass.

We booked here primarily because of the costing and the fantastic reviews the place had recieved. When we arrived we were unable to access our room as the lock had broke, we were asked if we could wait a while so they could try and fit a new one, this was fine and we decided to have a drink in the pub whilst we waited. Everybody in the pub is very welcoming and we were made to feel totally welcome. After around 20 minutes teh gentleman came down and said that he was unable to fix the lock it was the wrong size and it would be sorted tomorrow. He reassured us that we wcould lock the door from the inside and that there was a seperate door for entry into the accomodation part and nobody would go upstairs from the pub. We felt assured so we didnt worry too much and we made sure we had on us anything valuable. However this was not corrected throughout our 2 night stay and I felt a little dissapointed that this was not rectified or even discussed any further with us.

The bedrooms are clean, well equipped and the bed is huge!! and very comfortable. However I couldnt see us stay any longer than a few days as it did feel at times a little claustrophobic when we were both trying to get ready...to the point that when my partner was ready he would go and wait outside. The shower works well and there are complimentary wash and shower gel. Also there is fresh fruit, and cereals as well as croissants and pots of jam for guests to have to eat. We had this and it was sufficent.

As I said everybody was incredibly friendly and we would stay here again, and but for these few issues we had a nice stay.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
A small traditional pub in a side street of Hove just off of the main thoroughfare that links Brighton and Hove, the pub has no food, no Sky TV, no loud music and no gaming machines, just a pub, BLISS! Originally called the Station Inn the earliest record as a pub was 1867 and was originally the Brunswick Police and Fire Station hence the name. There is a stark difference between the old pub and the modern guest rooms. We took the pub over in 2010 and converted the living accommodation to 3 en-suite rooms. We are helped by a great team, Warren, John, Maggie, Kevin and Lisa. They all make our guests welcome as do our pub customers and Beau (our dog). Unfortunately, due to the age and nature of the property, access for some people may be difficult. If you have any special needs please give us a call to find out if we are able to accommodate you. ... more   less
