“A Five Star, Three Star”

The surprising thing about Hotel Olaertsduyn is that it is only rated (by its proprietors) as a Three Star Hotel... I would say that it could easily compete with some of the major four star international hotels I've stayed in. The reason the management give for the modest ranking is that they recognise that the bathrooms might need an upgrade to bring them into line with higher graded hotels... well, maybe. But that doesn't detract from the fact that the hotel is excellently run by its keen and efficient staff - and here's the clincher: at only £35 per night each for B&B, it represents excellent value. The decor is minimalist and modern in a 1990s sort of style with Ikea-like simplicity, but the rooms are spacious and clean. I loved the open plan - eat (most) anytime breakfast room - mainly Continental Cuisine, but a nod to the British guests with an easy to use hot plate and a limitless supply of bacon and eggs. Finally, just a word about the excellent staff; friendly and super efficient, they really made our stay complete.

Room Tip: Because it is a "Conference" hotel, the off-season for this hotel is in the summer months...

Visited for 3 nights [long story - not appropriate for this entry] to attend a wedding at the Landhuis which is an excellent venue for a wedding with the house, grounds, small pond with swans & fish.

However the hotel was very basic. The external view as you approach is not attractive, but the entrance lobby is quite pleasent.

The disappointment is the rooms, very, very basic, although they have the amenities that i would expect. In some ways a poor mans premier Inn, and not i dont think a 3 * rating.

However contrast this with the staff who are brilliant. Co-Linda and Bethan were brilliant & very helpful for any aspect that you require. Certainly they made the stay more tolerable & i hope are recognised as valuable additions by the hotel management.

The breakfasts were continental, but with the added quirk of having the opportunity of cooking your own fresh bacon & eggs on a hot plate type of cooker etc. The food was of basic choice but still very pleasent, and really nice coffee's etc [ why does it always taste better abroad].

There is little or no entertainment as most of the guests are, i guess here for any wedding, or for walking - it is a very good area for this, as it is a nature area, and quite close to the beaches in this area. There are also some contractors who lodge here - as i guess they work at the Europort area which is about 7 or 8 kms away - however you hardly see them, or for that matter anybody.

For us the worst part was the lack of heating - there was little or no heating - and even when asked - they heating levels were quite low, and the rooms cool, even in early June.

The problem is there are few hotels in this area to choose from, although there are a couple of nice hamlets in Oosteven & Brille, which are quite attractive in their own way, and may have accomodation.

As a one off night stay for a wedding, it is probably OK - for longer - i do have reservations, but as i say the staff are the best feature of this hotel without doubt.

Another thing is they serve evening meals during the week, but not at week end? - , although they supply a list of places to eat within the immediate area, but you do need a car.

The hotel price is reasonable [ for wedding overnighters] but i think quite expensive otherwise given the facilities at the hotel.

Room Tip: None - from speaking with other guests, they are all similar.. which is a shame, as it could be so m...

Very poor & sober, even for a conference centre. Bathrooms lacked shower curtain & hair dryer but did have a couple of old, greyish towels - too nasty to use really. Another con was the fact that I had absolutely no reach with my cell phone during the entire stay. Final con: forget coming here if you don't have a car... The nearest bus stop is a fair 25 min. walk from the premiss.

Finally a few pro's: beautiful park surrounding the hotel, good breakfast buffet and the nearby mansion is great for weddings (which is why I came here in the first place)
