3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2014

Staff were exceptionally helpful and friendly. The room was basic. No kettle, tiny tv, old towels and bedding. Room seemed clean. Nice view from balcony one way (the sea), not so nice view the other way (smoking chimneys). The prices for food, room service, coffee etc seemed very steep. Breakfast at 10 euro per person was disappointing, all cold food, except for some scrambled eggs. Wifi was free and it worked ok in our room. Lots of restaurants nearby. Good bus links to nearby railway stations and therefore its easy to get around. I think it took us less than an hour to get to Amsterdam by bus and train. Hotel is in a lovely place, set on a sand dune.

My first visit to the Netherlands and couldn't have asked for anything more. Lovely hotel set high in the dunes, greeted by friendly staff on arrival, nothing too much to ask. Beautiful seaview room, clean and comfortable. Would definitely stay again.

Nice hotel on top of a dune (foundation is an old German bunker) overlooking the North Sea.
(though there are also rooms overlooking the steel works next door).
Practically on the beach ! and the restaurant has excellent food !

Room Tip: Sea view room (cost a bit extra).

Our family room was great - large with two separate single beds for our children (5&8) which is always a bonus rather than the quibbles sharing a sofa bed can bring! Staff were friendly and room was clean. The breakfast was fantastic and the hotel makes an excellent base for exploring north Holland with direct access to the beach. The only downside was dinner in the restaurant. There was not a choice of wine (other than the colour!) and we were not allowed tap water for the children to drink, instead we had to buy bottled water. the food was expensive for what it was we thought and did not meet our expectations, especially the kids meals which consisted of deep fried chips and chicken nuggets. However, there are plenty of lovely local restaurants within 5min walk so dinners well catered for. Breakfast was good and offered a lovely selection of continental food. There was an option to pay extra for late check out which is handy if you want to make the most of the beach.

Room Tip: Ask for higher level and sea view for the best sunsets

Nice rooms in het Hoge Duin and very friendly staff. On top of a dune (foundation is an old german bunker) and overlooking the beach and the Northsea.
The food is of excellent quality in the restaurant and the waitress, Gonda, friendly and efficient. We had a wonderful weekend.

The location:
The very small village is quite quaint with a choice of bars and restaurants.
Direct access to a kilometres long and beautiful beach and a wonderful 18 Km long protected dune landscape (admission fee to-day 1,5 Euro per adult). A real pleasure for walks, cycling and riding.
BUT next to the village there is huge CORUS chemical factory. It’s not only the hideous view of the buildings and chimney that are disturbing but also the suffocating rotten egg smell when the wind blows from the south.

The Hoge Duin hotel
is located at the top of a dune with direct access to the beach. Very quiet location, certain rooms have a sea view others have the Corus factory view. I wouldn’t say that this is dramatic, but being at the seashore, one would expect something else.

All staff members we met were very friendly and helpful. The hotel gave a very clean impression. The rooms were spotless clean. The decoration is OK but an IKEA cheap version. Those who love very soft mattresses will certainly appreciate the mattress. Breakfast was outstanding. The restaurant is OK; the dishes have sophisticated names but can’t really keep their promise.

We were there during winter season (the off season) and paid 95 Euro breakfast included, which for off-season seems to us as to expensive for the quality.
During the weekend, there was quite some beach activity of windsurfers, kite surfers, car sailing, paragliding etc… if you would go for a more “zen” feeling, you have to walk a few Km.
A big plus was the internet connection in all rooms (free of charge)
All together a pleasant experience where I would come back if it wasn’t for this Corus factory.

Restaurants in the village:
The fish restaurant (at the same time fish shop) is charging extravagantly high for even not the “fish and chips shop” quality they serve (40 Euro per person for the starter & a main dish, 2 glasses of wine & water + 1 coffee).

Restaurant De Liefhebbers was a good experience.

Five nights here in late April gave us an off-season sea view at the end of our day trips around northern Holland. We had a large "luxurious double sea view room." Very nice continental breakfast of cold cuts, yogurt, variety of breads & cereals, hard boiled eggs, jams & honey; quiet during our off-season visit. The wi-fi was excellent & handy for anyone with an iPod, iPhone or laptop computer (the hotel's public computer was not working during our stay at the end of April 2010). Fridge in room, tea pot, plates/cups/utensils were nice additions, especially for wine & cheese in the afternoon or a cup of tea before bed. Beautiful view from our balcony - entire wall was a window w/door to balcony.
Rooms need some refurbishing - a coat of paint and new rug would do. The public areas were particularly in need of freshening, especially the rugs. The door to the room (141) did not lock automatically - this is a safety concern! The restaurant was not open for dinner during our stay at the end of April 2010. Parking was somewhat limited for a hotel of this size. The many levels made access difficult, especially at arrival. Night entrance was accessible only by a staircase (small).
