“best hotel on the island but definitely 3 star”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2014

We just got back from 4 nights on Texel at hotel Opduin.
Very kind reception on arrival.Staff tries very hard.
I agree with earlier reviews that there should be an extra elevator and that service in the restaurant in the evening is slow.
My room was very clean but dated. The carpet could do with renewal. The shower sprayed all over the bathroom and needed to be fixed.
Bed is alright but nothing special.
Breakfast is excellent but 18 Euros pp.
It is very much a family hotel, lots of grandparents with grandchildren and exceedingly dog friendly.Dogs are allowed everywhere....
It is a short walk through a camping to the beach.
Camping can be noisy in the evening.Small cafés and restaurants on the beach are excellent with very fresh food.
The swimming pool is clean but lots of people swimming in quite a small pool.
New newspapers every day,and lots of interesting outings on the island from the hotel.

I shall watch during the year if and when the hotel decides to update the rooms, otherwise I shall not go back at that price.
We had four beautiful sunny days, but in rain I can imagine the hotel to be a bit sad.
The spa was excellent with a good message therapist.

Room Tip: top floor and looking out to sea.

Dear Ittagub, Thank you very much for your extensive review. We appreciate it that you took the time and effort to write down your experiences.
We did not hear before that our 2 elevators are not enough, but thank your mentioning this.
At the end of this year or the beginning of next year we will renovate our rooms. So we look forward to welcoming you again in one of our renewed rooms.
Hopefully till next time.

It is the most expensive hotel on the island and not worth it.
I've looked for nice place to celebrate my husband birthday but we were very disappointed.
As we arrived the woman in the reception talked in the phone and its took 10 min until someone help us.
The room is very old and old fashion furnished.
The elevator didn’t work and we used to other on which was tiny and archaic.
breakfast is O.K. but again overpriced (18 euro per person)
seems that the other hotels on the island, are in the same level, therefor it's better to pick up cheapest one and not spent so much money on this hotel.

Because of the weather forecast we decided to run away to Texel for the weekend and this hotel was one of the few available at such short notice. Didn't get there until early Saturday evening and the welcome by reception was really very nice. The person couldn't have been more helpful which is a great intro to any hotel. Straight in to dinner before they closed and had an enjoyable and relaxed meal. Breakfast buffet was excellent and the best thing - real, fresh squeezed OJ. Even though we had to check out we stayed all day on the terrace, enjoying the sun, reading books and enjoying the atmosphere of the hotel and location.
What stood this hotel apart is the attention to detail throughout the public areas. Its very well done and it is clearly run by someone who is good at what they do.

We stayed 2 nights int the hotel with our (pretty big) dog in a junior suite. Although there are some minor flaws, the extreme friendly staff makes you feel really welcome.

First the positive things:
Great staff, everywhere.... all very helpfull and friendly, one of the best experiences in all hotels we have ever been.
The hotel is in a very good location. Couple of minutes walk to the beach as well as only a few miniutes to the center of the small town.
Food (we had breakfast, lunch and dinner) is very good and not too expensive.
More than enough parking space.
Everything is very clean and well maintained.
Very dog friendly

We had a room that overlooked the parking and dunes. I prefer that to the village view, although that wasn't bad either. But on the dunes side you have a spectacular sunset.

Negative points:
Well all small things. Elevator is small and very, very slow. In the evening I would like to have small dinner card in the lobby with simple dishes. Some items in the room do not really match (seem to be some new and older furniture). Last one: for my, the bed is a bit on the hard side, but I am used to a very soft bed.

All in all I am very satisfied and will go back for sure! Especially the packages they regularly offer are very good value for money.

Room Tip: All rooms are nice and quiet, but the dune side has a spectacular sunset.

We enjoyed the Junior suites as family rooms (each can hold up to 4). They were large and comfortable with one double bed (2 very comfortable single mattresses next to each other) and one pull out couch, good for children but also ok for an adult and child.

Location of this hotel is super. It's right in the dunes above the sea. If you want a view of the dunes, the higher up the better, and some of the rooms overlook the parking lot and then the dunes so ask to make sure. The other side is fine as well w/ views of the town.

The walk from the hotel to the beach is 7 or 8 minutes, down & up a hill, and the beach itself is wide and white sand, one of the nicest in Holland. Sunsets are especially beautiful on the beach, incredible colors!

The walk to the town De Koog is less than 5 minutes; it's a real beach town, very touristy & crowded esp. in high season, lots of reasonably priced and good but not great restaurants.

The staff at the hotel was friendly and the breakfast was really nice. The kids loved the fresh orange juice machine where you can have as much fresh OJ as you want. Also lots of breads, muffins, cheeses, meat, fish, eggs any way you want them. The koffie verkeerd (latte) is delicious.

The rooms were a bit hot at night (no airco, just fans) but the weather was exceptionally warm so no complaints. The pool was nice and the lounge areas of the hotel were comfortable.

The hotel was not extraordinary (I am quite spoiled by having been to some really top hotels) and some details were missing (no shampoo available while we were there which was a bit strange but they compensated by giving us extra bottles of shower gel), there were not enough towels in the room for the number of guests we had, no refrigerator in the room, no airco only fans, but we were overall very happy with our experience there.

We did not try the restaurants, there are plenty of choices just a few minutes' walk away in the village De Koog. We did enjoy the happy hour on Friday afternoon, nice touch offered by the hotel, very friendly and served outside right in the dunes, drinks & small appetizers.

Kids did try the pool and enjoyed it, it was not crowded and is a nice size. There is a game room w/ a pool table and some board games, and a small gym.

Room Tip: Ask for a room looking out over the dunes, the higher the better - and there are some rooms that do...

We had concerns re The Brasserie from previous comments and unfortunately this was very disappointing service. It started well from friendly staff but then they all disappeared and we had a long wait between courses and for plates to be cleared. Not acceptable standard for a 4 star hotel.
However, the hotel room was spacious, comfortable and clean and well appointed. Re negative points, the shower was too small and air conditioning inadequate for the hot weather but otherwise no complaints.
The breakfast choice was lovely and very good reception staff. The new veranda was peaceful and a great place to relax.
We choice the wine and dine package and it was a great choice.
Overall, we were glad we chose this hotel and would return and hope service improves in the meantime.
