“Reasonable and clean”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 12, 2014

I joined a friend to stay in this hotel. The location is not near the centrum but convenient to catch a bus since the stop bus in front of the hotel. It take less than 15 minutes to go to train station or centrum with the bus. Beside the hotel there is MC Donald so it is convenient when you need a quick bite and on emergency. The hotel lobby is simple and the room is big enough for European size and very clean. The bath room is big and clean with hotel amenities.
The price is reasonable for European / Holland price. It is worth it to try when you have to stay in the area

It's a budget hotel and so there's no faffing about and there's no frills. Being pleasantly greeted on arrival by reception staff with flawless English was nice.

Despite being a budget hotel, the room was surprisingly large, and the bathroom was excellent.

I and a colleague ate in the restaurant which serves simple food done well (I had schnitzel, my colleague had beef stew; both were tasty and filling) at a reasonable price.

Breakfast, though, was little short of chaos, and I think I know why. There's a line for the buffet and it terminates at the coffee machine. The problem arises because you can get your breakfast from the buffet before the person in front of you has got their coffee - because the machine is a bit slow (makes great coffee, though). A logjam builds up and even those people who don't want coffee are now stuck.

Being a Briton, I am automatically a world expert at orderly queuing, and I would suggest separating the food buffet from the coffee machine. This would remove the bottleneck and let people who don't want coffee with their breakfast to get to their table quickly.

This hotel does understand what is good value for a very good price. No nonsense but very pleasant to stay. Express (online) checkin and checkout saves much time. The service is no-nonsense but very pleasant and personal. The rooms are good size, even the flatscreen tv is good size :) Very clean and good central location for the (business) traveller.

We stayed at the Bastion at Schiphol airport before so I had some idea what to expect. On arrival they allowed us an early check-in, which was great. Our rooms were clean on the first day (Sat) and after that it was a battle to get our rooms cleaned. The front desk staff on duty were trying to be very helpful and I'm not sure whether they were short staffed for the week? Items in our room were not replenished and we had to go and request tea/coffee from reception. The breakfast were expensive and we opted to buy food at the store a few bus stops down. There is a lovely Turkish restaurant that does an awesome "kapsalon" which I could not finish! We stayed for a total of 6 days and were out sightseeing most of the time - so did not have much time to experience the hotel itself. It was value for money (our Rand is very weak) and I won't stay there again as I would choose a hotel closer to Amsterdam central. We thought Haarlem would be a better option as Amsterdam was so expensive due to Royal celebrations happening that same week. But in retrospect and all things considered, I would stay in Amsterdam as the money spent on bus and train fares levels it out.

Room Tip: We were on the 1st floor and it was nice and quiet.

Myself and some friends stayed in this hotel, not by choice as we were changed from our booked hotel which was the Bastion in Amsterdam. People were disappointed to find the hotel so far from Amsterdam and no facilities in the hotel. The room and the bed was very small. No room for suitcases and the bathroom was tiny. We got an upgrade for a small extra charge, which was better. We had no cups provided in the room though there was a kettle and tea and coffee available. There was no remote control for the TV and we were unable to turn it on. In spite of requesting this, it wasnt provided. On our arrival we were dismayed to find the outside was like a building site with machinery all around. The rubbish bins were at the front door. There was no available meals in the hotel on the evening we arrived. We travelled into Amsterdam by coach for dinner and returned to the hotel at 11.15 pm to be told that the bar was closed and there was no residents bar. The computer in the reception area was out of order. There was a pool table and a game machine in the reception area which was also the dining area. The hotel staff were very rude and unhelpful, when we arrived, though I must say that guests were also very unhappy with facilities in the hotel. The breakfasts were good and the staff friendly on both mornings of our stay. We checked the menu for dinner on the second evening, but this was very limited, so we walked to a small village nearby and found a wenderful restaurant. We didnt book directly with the hotel, but through an agent and were informed the hotel was four star.

Room Tip: book a deluxe room in the new part of the hotel

We stayed at the Bastion for three nights. Breakfast buffet was a bit expensive. McDonald's was next door so we had breakfast there. The shower for the bathroom was a nozzle extending from the wall with a shower curtain. There was no enclosed area for the shower so the whole bathroom floor was constantly wet.

Bus stop was within walking distance and took us directly to the train station.

Basically, this was a place to rest our heads and not to spend too much time in. The price was reasonable for quality of the hotel.
