“Lovely hotel in a postcard village”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2014

Firstly Monnikendam is worth a visit for its own sake. It is a picture postcard small town (or large village) with cobbled streets, old houses, canals and locks. It has a Disney feel to someone from the UK, as everything is clean and well cared for (I mean everything, every house, street sign, cafe, bollard etc). There are cafes, shops and restaurants. Parking on the main street is limited, but there is space alongside the canal if you loop around the one-way system. There is a pleasant small market on Saturday morning.

It is very quiet (we were there in January) but locals say it is always quiet, it isn't a tourist destination apparently. In the UK it would be like a Bibury or Stow-on-the-Wold, with coaches full of visitors.

The Posthoorn is a small hotel on the main street in an old building, so all the rooms are different. We stayed in the Sistersroom (I think) which was large and comfortable. Note the bathroom, while large with a bath and separate shower, is quite open to the bedroom. It has frosted double glass doors, so if you need privacy for your ablutions it'll be somewhat limited <g>

We ate a tasting menu in the highly rated restaurant together with a selection of wines. It lived up to the reputation. Splendid food and Mark (the owner) does a good job of explaining why he has chosen certain wine with each dish. Even if you don't stay at the hotel give the food a try.

The downside is the cost, neither the hotel nor the restaurant is inexpensive, but then Europe isn't generally a budget destination.

Having driven in to Amsterdam to look around I'd echo another reviewer and say if you are short of time don't bother, just relax in Monnikendam, it is a much nicer experience.

Room Tip: We saw two of the suites and they were both large and pleasant, we didn't see the rooms describe...

We chose the Posthoorn to celebrate my 65th birthday. With children and partners, we had a party of 8 and occupied 4 of the hotels 6 rooms. The rooms, especially the 2 suites, were all different and well appointed. We had booked well in advance and all our requests, including dietary requirements, were met.

Starting with a glass of champagne and amouse bouche in the library, we moved into the restaurant for the Chef's Treat Package of 6 courses with matching wines. The food and wines were very good and the Maitre d' was attentive and knowledgeable on wine. The breakfast was basic, but adequate. However, I was surprised to find that we were charged extra for cofee at breakfast - not very Dutch.

Monnickendam is worth a look around and, if you are lucky, you may see a luxury yacht being worked on in the harbour.

We would definitely return here.

Room Tip: The 2 suites are excellent !

Only 30minute bus journey from Amsterdam, this lovely village and beautiful street made us question why we would want to go into Amsterdam at all.
After finishing a conference in Holland, my wife flew in to celebrate our wedding Anniversary. We got a taxi from the airport - don't do this - over priced and you will be looking at 110-130euros! Only 75Euros when we booked with Posthoorn after our weekend stay.
We stayed in the Persijnen room which is lovely and romantic. The bathroom is open plan, so if you are a new couple, worth bearing this in mind!
We booked in to dinner for the Friday night which was lovely. Some of the food we would not have ordinarily ordered but it was presented as you would expect and was a delight. When returning to our room, all the candles had been lit - small thing but meant a lot. We had also given the time we wanted breakfast - another lovely touch not to be pressured into going down when they want you there.
After a lovely breakfast we used their bikes on Saturday (FOC) to see a bit more of the area before we got the quick ish bus to Amsterdam.
We would stay here again and it has made me question why I would stay in the heart of a city again if there are such lovely places to stay like this.

Monnikendam is a charming village close to Amsterdam. And Hotel Posthoorn is a gem within the heart of the town. Only a few rooms, individually decorated. You may find them a little kitchy with lots of stuff standing around, but feel comfortable anyways once you drown in dozends of pillows.
And the greatest thing about Posthoorn is located on the ground floor: its restaurant!
Far away from what you usually can expect from Dutch cuisine, this kitchen really is worth a detour.

My boyfriend took me away for a surprise 2 night stay for my 30th birthday. I was SO impressed with this hotel. We arrived on a Monday - we had already been told the restaurant would be closed so it wasn't a surprise to us but we had a lovely meal on the harbour anyway so it was no bother. The staff couldn't have been more helpful, we were upgraded to a private suite at no extra cost - I can't find the name of it on the hotel website but rather than being in the hotel itself it was next door, with your own private entrance. The room was stunning - huge shower, roll top bath, king size bed.
We had a lovely continental breakfast each morning - which perhaps is considered basic by some people's standards but it was lovely fresh meat, cheese, pastries, freshly baked bread - the kind of thing you expect in Europe.
We dined at the restaurant on our 2nd night and we couldn't fault it - fab service, wonderful food, great wine. We were the last diners to leave and they made no attempt to rush us - it was great.
I'm really shocked at the bad reviews on here as I honestly couldn't fault this place - the little touches like returning to our room after dinner and finding all of the candles had been lit was really nice.
Monnickendam itself is a really quaint little place - we visited during snow and freezing weather but it made it even more special, it felt like a Winter wonderland.

I would return to this hotel in an instant - if you want somewhere where the staff go out of their way to make your stay feel special, and a great hotel in a beautiful setting, then this is your place.

Visited in august in a suite. Not too bad rooms. But the walls need repainting and a lightbulb didnt work. Toilet next to the shower isnt optimal. The royal breakfast was pretty damn basic with no fruit or cerial what so ever. Also dont expect any service on monday evenings because there isnt a single member of staff in the hotel. Restaurant is good but serves pretty slow and with a wine arrangement we still had to pay for every refill we had making slow service pay off big time. It was a highly expensive experience we will not likely repeat.

I picked the Posthoorn for its fine dining arrangment when I wanted to take my boyfriend on a surprise weekend for his birthday. The staff were all adorable and helpful, the food was an excellent surprise (we both work in a 2Michelin star restaurant but the cooking was pretty much just perfect) and the bedroom was cosy, and very prettily arranged, with the bathtub in the bedroom rather than the bathroom which was a partitioned-off shower and loo. We thouroughly enjoyed stay, and decided that next time we'd make it at least two nights.
