We travelled to Holland with Stena Line specifically to see the bulb fields at their peak and found this lovely little hotel on Booking.com. It is 60 miles from the Hook of Holland and well placed for visiting the whole of that region. The Boschlust is owned and run by Wilma van Leeuwen and has a wonderful relaxing ambience for those who wish to get away from the madding crowd. It is a small Pension in a quiet neighbourhood on the outskirts of Bergen, just 5 km from the coast and a short drive to Alkmaar. Wilma is the PERFECT host and nothing is too much trouble and returning there from a day out is like coming home. There is a wonderful buffet breakfast consisting of mostly FairTrade Foods, and bacon and eggs are available on request. We had room 16 at the back overlooking the garden (where you can sit and write your postcards) and the only noise was the bird song. The beds were very comfortable and there were many good cable TV stations to choose from. The bathroom was small, being in the roof space, but fitted out to a very high "wet room" standard. There is ample free off street parking and the local shops are within walking distance. There are 2 small supermarkets where you can stock up on cold drinks and snacks. We enjoyed the fresh produce, especially the early crop of strawberries! For eating out can highly recommend "Het Centrum" right in the centre of town where there is an excellent menu of char-grilled meats, fresh veg and a salad bar at a good price. The scenery in the North is very "Dutch" with the coastal Dykes and Windmills, and in the Spring there is the added bonus of the wonderful aromatic bulb fields. They have to be seen and sniffed to be believed! There are great Zoos at Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Amersfoort all well worth a visit. Volendam is pretty but very busy with tourists. If you visit in the Spring and plan to go to Keukenhof, buy your ticket online before you go to save hours of queueing. After sampling all these tourist attractions return to the peaceful haven that is the Boschlust where Wilma will welcome you back. We would definitely go back if we return to Holland (a VERY underrated holiday destination!!)
