“Pretty good, but avoid the annex rooms”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2014

I stayed here for an event, and unfortunately I was given a room in an older part of the motel. It was honestly like a ridiculous maze getting to my room, and it seems others may have experienced it similarly, as I ran into other wanderers a couple of times during my first attempt to find my room.

Once there, the room was clean and spacious, although not as modern and up to date as my friends' rooms in the main building--mine definitely was showing its age. Still, despite not having a spa bath, my bathtub was nice and roomy, and the separate shower was okay(although the shower head was an older kind stuck to the wall from a great height).

I think if you were a family traveling by car, the annex might be a really good choice, as there's lots of parking spaces near the doors, but for somebody attending an event and arriving by plane or train, it makes less sense to stay so far off the beaten track.

The daytime receptionist women were firm but friendly, but were unable or unwilling to change my room to one that wasn't in BumF+ck Iowa unless I paid €79 extra per evening. The night duty reception clerk was much more accommodating, at least when it came to cakes, unlocking the pastry case for our hungry and drunken group after hours.

The bar was pleasant, and photos from friends who visited the restaurant looked really amazing. Breakfast was quite okay as well. It seems like quite the local hotspot on a Saturday night, as we saw families and couples who were coming in from nearby areas for dinner.

Room Tip: Be firm and insist upon one of the refurbished rooms in the main building.

Just north of Amsterdam, at a highway exit, lies Hotel Restaurant van der Valk Akersloot. I was there for one night with a collegue and had dinner . Although both hotel and restaurant are big, the sphere is very good. The meals we had were very good and so was the double room with bubble bath. Everything was very clean and spacy, and the organisation was running like an oiled machine. Congrats van der Valk Akersloot, very good!

Room Tip: Book at the hotels internet site, they offer last minute rooms that are attractive

Good points: We had a refurbished ("standard deluxe") room, which was perfectly comfortable with a roomy bathroom. Although there was a huge number of people at dinner, service was prompt and the food surprisingly good. We both had steamed mussels for a main course. I had sashimi to begin and my wife had smoked eel from the local lake. The latter was amongst the best eel we have come across. The swimming pool is large enough to get some proper exercise (but see also negatives below). The bar in attractive, but the service sloppy.

Bad points: The room had not been properly cleaned. Full internet bandwidth is only available if you agree to "Like" the hotel on Facebook, otherwise you have to put up with a reduced rate. Does this count as coercion? The swimming pool is used by local clubs and swimming classes, but the times of these are not available in the reception and are wrong on the notice displayed in the swimming pool. We had to wait until 17:30 to swim. This is not mentioned on the hotel website: I think it is close to fraud to advertise any facility swimming pool, which is only partly available to hotel guests. The hotel is currently being re-built so some areas look out over building sites. Teh carpets in teh corridors are old and worn.

Final comments: its just to big. When you combine that with the major building works then I'd go somewhere else. It is a shame that van der Valk hotels seem so inconsistent, so you are never quite sure what you will find on arrival. The one in Almere for example is very good.

Room Tip: One of the refurbished rooms

After consulting trip advisor we settled on this hotel and were not disappointed, in the contrary everything was great. Excellent welcome, super room, excellent restaurant and even though very busy they coped very well. As we needed a rest after the long drive and it was a Friday we visited the nearby cheese Market in Alkmaar, a must in your lifetime.

We stayed for 2 nights in August. We had a premium room which was gorgeous, complete with rain shower, whirlpool bath and quality bed/bedding. Check in was a little abrupt and cold, with an eagerness to sell us breakfast, which for the price of the room should have been included. The pool area was rather shabby, had no towels and was also not very well lit in the evening. Akersloot itself is super, a really beautiful village. There was ample parking and a comfortable bar with lots of very smartly dressed staff. We would stay here again but hopefully it will include breakfast next time.
