“Charming hotel in a pretty village”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 21, 2012

The hotel is in the centre of the pretty village of Arcen, near a river and within walking distance of the superb Kasteeltuinen (Castle Gardens) which garden lovers should make a point of seeing.

Our room (number 21) was situated on the first floor of the main hotel building overlooking the garden and we had no problems with noise - I believe that problems with "thin walls" may be restricted to the ground floor annexe next to the rear gardens, as the main building is well soundproofed.

The two-night package including evening meals, breakfast and entry to the Floriade was excellent value. The towels and bathroom fittings were nothing exceptional but everything was clean and reasonable for a mid-range hotel.

Evening meals were very good though the wait between courses was unacceptably long the first night, with half an hour between each course. However, I mentioned this to the waitress and I was told the delay was because they like to give guests a chance to relax between courses. Maybe worth bearing in mind if, like us, you are tired after a long drive and just want to get to bed! The following night we experienced no such delays, proving it is always best to let the hotel know and give them a chance to fix it if something isn't as you would like it. The food itself was absolutely delicious.

Breakfast starts at 8am and is buffet-style continental plus bacon and scrambled eggs. The second morning the latter were not ready until 8.20 and we had almost finished, so we didn't bother with it, as we had to be away and out of the car park early as the streets and hotel car park were going to be closed for the "Asparagus Fair" at 9.00am.

Overall not perfect, but close enough to merit a 5 out of 5.

Room Tip: Main hotel does not have any problems with thin walls!

On a family trip to Floriade, we wanted something close but in a smaller quieter location than Venlo. Typically we like smaller, querky hotels that are different to big mainstream chains and Hotel de Maasparel fitted the bill. We had 2 rooms set in the small but lovely gardens. Rooms were both a good size but quite different to each other. One had 2 walls of windows and was very bright and summery while the room next door had one very small window and was quite dark. The gardens were a delight to have outside the room but i would agree with other comments that the walls between the bathrooms were very thin and conversations as well as bathroom sounds good easily be heard!
Breakfast is set in a lovely breakfast room, good selection but missing a toaster! Resturant looked lovely and seemed very popular in the evenings but unfortunately it only had 1 vegtarian option and also seemed a bit expensive.
Overall I liked the hotel and would recommend for those wanting something different to a big chain hotel.

Room Tip: Garden Rooms, No 7 had the best view and lots of windows

We were greeted with a smile, and given answers to our questions. Rooms were of a good size and nicely but simply decorated. We had rooms in the garden and as per other comments could hear our neighbours especially in the bathroom. Breakfast was simple, but plentiful, we would have liked to have been able to toast bread but otherwise breakfast was good. Didn't use the restaurant in the evenings as we had a vegetarian in the party and only one option was available (with mushrooms which our vegetarian does not eat). Arcen itself is a quiet location, but the Castle gardens are definitely worth a visit.

We did not stay at this hotel but spent two lovely evenings in the restaurant. We received a very warm welcome from the staff and received wonderful service especially from the two young lady waitresses who were proud of their town, its culture, the restaurant and the food it served, especially the asperagus which is extensively grown in the area.

We chose to eat from the special 3 course menu each evening and loved the Arcenese Mustard Soup (hope to find the receipe on line). The main courses where a choice of Lamb Stew, Pork de Chef and one other which I cannot remember, recommend the stew and pork. Served with a lovely salad, fresh vegetables and chips. We chose to add a portion of asperagus to try it, very different from the asperagus we have in England. Choice of Tea or Coffee. Dessert is available at an extra charge. Cost 24 euros per person. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and the atmosphere is very serene.

We would recommend booking a table if you are not staying in the hotel. Thank to everyone at the restaurant for making us so welcome, we hope to return to the area in the future.

Chose this hotel because of its situation in the picturesque town of Arcen in the Limburg countryside. Friendly welcoming staff, with nothing too much trouble for them. Evening meal excellent, if a little pricey. Good choice, but could have done with an English version, though our waitress did try hard to translate the comprehensive Dutch/German menu. Breakfast was typical continental, nothing special but certainly OK. Only real complaint was the soundproofing of the rooms, but not too horrific once our next door neighbours had finished their ablutions.

Travelling in a group, the choice of the Maasparel was not our own but that of the organiser. Having said that, we very much enjoyed our stay here and would return. We were allocated a large, ground floor room with direct access to the garden. It was well furnished and a good size, although the lack of any sound-proofing meant that we were a little more in tune with our neighbours on both sides than we might have liked. This was particularly noticeable in the large, echoing bathroom!
Breakfast was simple but good and plentiful, served with a smile.
Arcen itself was a delight with plenty things to amuse - many within easy walking distance. Stepping outside the hotel, across the road, one could access the grassy riverbank path, or spend a happy hour sitting watching the barges pass by.
A good base from which to explore this interesting region, especially during the Asparagus season!

  • Liked — The situation in a small, interesting town
  • Disliked — A small niggle - there was no hairdryer!
