“basic but beautiful”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2013

The Strandhotel has only some 12 rooms and offers everything you basically need in a basic way. You can sleep, shower and eat. Don't expect luxury of any kind, but an authentic and characteristic place to stay, located right ON the endless beach. You wonder if they have to dig themselves out of the sand dunes every year.
The rooms and the beds are small, the toilets and the basic shower are opposite some of the rooms in the corridor. If you happen to have rainy weather and you need to dry your clothes in the room there is a problem. But people are friendly and easy going so they hang everything on the railing of the stairs. In summer AC would be a real added value. The outstanding aspects are the bike service and the restaurant. You can rent excellent bikes of any kind, electric bikes included. They serve Frisian whisky that can live up to Scottish standards. The atmosphere in restaurant is real nice, breakfast is good (including Frisian sugar bread!) and dinner is more than you would expect. So if you have realistic expectations you won't feel sorry. Given the price the quality level is all right.

Room Tip: ask for room number 10, it is the ' biggest'

We celebrated my friend's 55th birthday here and stayed 3 nights and cannot wait to return. Don't expect luxury...instead a friendly, comfortable clean beach hotel where you step out of the front door and onto the beach. We had to share bathrooms but not a problem. Had the most amazing sea view where we watched glorious sunsets from the comfort of our beds.Kitty was very friendly and helpful and even brought Anne a cappucino in bed on her birthday. The food was excellent and enjoyed the seafood. Spent our days swimming, cycling and walking.

We participated in an auction; you could bid for two nights at this hotel at this website called Vakantieveilingen. We won the auction and paid a total amount of 113 EUR including breakfast for two persons. So EUR 28,25 per person per night.

Just to be clear: we loved the hostess named Kitty. She was very nice and we praise her for her kindness, but... we really did not like our stay here due to the rooms and due to the fact that we had to share a bathroom with the other guests. The rooms were also really noisy! We stayed at room #1 (I think this is the smallest room you can get... so we were not lucky!) and in order to get to your room, you needed to walk up the stairs. We could hear EVERYONE walking up and down the stairs all night long... so this was not good for our good night rest. Moreover, the sink in the room was really crappy! The tap is not working properly! You need to use your hands constantly to open the tap to keep the water running... so unable to wash your face propely. I think they did this on purpose so that you were forced to go to the shared bathroom to wash your face... there are no sinks in the shares bathrooms, only showers... so in order to wash your face, you had to get a shower.... sigh!!!! Although there is no dust in the room (I double checked it), the overall feeling was that it was not clean. I think this feeling came from the really bad state the building is in. The building is really old and a renovation is necessary (and that is an understatement)....

I really would not recommend this place due to the bad bad bad rooms.. but.. if you are walking by this so called "hotel", do eat dinner here! The food is amazing!! We had a really nice dinner there.

I think their website is a bit deceiving, they show a very big, nice and "fresh looking" room, but this is really not the reality.....
