“Charming but rooms need upgrade”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2013

My family spent four nights in one of the larger ´garden rooms´ located in a 2-storey structure behind the main building. It's a little cramped for four (queen-size in main area, 2 singles in a separate bedroom), but since the island is great for exploring we spent little time indoors. Great location: the public bus stops in front of the hotel, village services (food, shopping, bike rental) and public swimming pool (guests swim for free) are no more than a five minute walk, the closest beach access is a seven minute bike ride.

Beds are fine. Outdated tv with the typical selection of cable channels, water cooker for coffee/tea but no fridge or other frills. Daily cleaning was good, no problems with towel changes. The building could use some maintenance - inside and outside. Everything works as it should, but is outdated. Staff is friendly, although sometimes a little stoic- a typical Frisian characteristic you have to love.

Continental breakfast in the main building was adequate. Coffee comes from a machine (not the same stuff served in the main restaurant and terrace), no warm dishes other than boiled eggs, only two kinds of cereal, but a decent selection of breads and spreads. Prices for drinks and snacks on the terrace are OK, but the room price is steep, considering the limited size and furnishings. Being a nature reserve island with limited room for accomodations, room prices will obviously be higher than on the mainland. But better deals are to be had if you look hard enough.

Room Tip: This is a pet-friendly hotel and some guests do bring their dog.

October 24th we had lunch and dinner in this restaurant. Its inside atmosphere brings back the good old days of family holidays: the interior, decorating, the people. The food (we had veal liver with lard and onions + cod) was very tasteful and reasonably priced. Service is very friendly. If you like old-fashioned quality and a little bit of nostalgia, this is the place to go on Schiermonnikoog!

Nice people, GREAT breakfast, good rooms and excellent food. Combine this with an unbeatable terrace and nice atmosphere on the most lovely island of the Netherlands.
We stayed for two days, three nights and started our early evening arrival with some drinks in comfortable seats in front of the open fire. Our room in the garden was very comfortable and complete. I stayed in this hotel before and again it met the expectations.

Room Tip: The garden rooms are excellent, outside of the building with lots of privacy.

The hotel is charming in some way, but the whole island is charming. The hotel also has a feeling of the "old" world, which is nice. The situation at the edge of the village is nice. However, the whole hotel is not very well maintained, the carpets are shabby, the staff is nice but not very professional. The whole thing made a rather chaotic impression to me. It is a pity, because this could be top class and very charming if it would be better managed.

Everything was perfect.
Our room with afternoon sun and a lighthouse view.
Cosy and unpretentious.
The hotel is in a great location between the center of town and the beach.

Room Tip: any room that faces the lighthouse.
