“Dated hotel, more like a youth hostel, nice restaurant, nice pool, bad breakfast”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2013

This hotel is dated and I really don't think they earn a 4 stars hotel.

Our room was in bad condtion. The bed was hard. The ceiling had damage. Also the coridor and entrance are looks more like a youth hostel than a 3 or 4 stars hotel.

Breakfast was poor, only ready made products and very little choose.

Pool is nice and full of light but there are no change rooms, so you need to go to your room to change, which is ok.

Room Tip: I think a room at the end of the corridor. When we were there, there were many children and they kno...

We used this hotel to relax for a few days on Ameland and it was perfect for what we needed. The Hotel and the rooms are clean and the restaurant is also good. You can hire bikes nearby at Tweewielerbedrijf Visser. The island has good bike routes and wonderful beaches.

I attended a large conference at this hotel, and the overall impression was that time stood still for the last 20-odd years. The appartments on the ground floor are barely adequate for two people, and *very* noisy. The higher floor appartments get very warm in summer, and have no AC. Opening a window helps, with the continuous breeze on the island. However, the bedroom is in a separate en-suite room with no windows and barely gets any fresh air.
Also the conference rooms were not well equipped, the projectors were too small to serve the entire room. Though additional projectors were placed half-way, the slides were still hard to read from the back.
The only reason I still rate the hotel as average, is the good and friendly service I received, and the quality of the food, which is also very good, given that they were serving well over a hundred people at once.

Room Tip: In summer, try to get an apartment on the ground floor, they have big sliding doors, which makes it...

This place is alright if they would not charge you like a 4 star resort because they definitely are not!

They have rooms, apartments and small houses for rent. We stayed 3 nights at the actual hotel. The rooms are basic. They're clean but old and with thin walls. The TV was very small and had bad reception too.

Parking at this hotel is no problem at all. Because it's on the island Ameland most people come by boat and don't bring their car. There is a bicycle rental business near the hotel. About 5 minute walk from the lobby. You can just leave your bicycle at the hotel at a large parking spot for bicycles.

The breakfast buffet was very good. Very large variety of different kinds of bread, cereal, yogurts and juices. The coffee was bad, I have seen people order coffee at the bar and bring it with them in the breakfast area. We also had dinner at their restaurant 2 times. Both dinners were very nice. The food quality was definitely worth the stars but the restaurant setting is again basic and old.

One night we were sitting outside and got hungry at about 10:30pm. I went to ask for the food menu. The girl at the bar looked surprised somebody actually came in to order something and told me they did not offer any food at this time of day. Only drinks. The mini bar in our room only contained some chocolate bars and a small bag of chips, so this was pretty inconvenient. We went to bed hungry.

The location is alright. It's about 5 minute bicycle ride to the sea. However next time we're at Ameland we will not stay at this hotel because the town Hollum is pretty dead. I would have rather stayed in Nes which is far more alive and most tourists actually stay around this town. Nes is about 10km away from from Hollum and the Amelander kaap.

As we travelled with our dog that was not allowed in the appartments, we rented both an appartment and a hotel room. The appartments are a bit basic with a tiny kitchen and no luxury feeling at all. As the entire building has a wooden base structure, it is rather noisy and we were glad we had an upstairs appartment.
The quality of the hotel bed was far better than the ones in the appartment. The outline of the hotel room however too is basic; no minibar, no coffee facilities etc. The breakfast is sureley no 4 stars.

In short; the location was excellent (2 km from the beach, walking distance from Hollum) but the look and feeld of both the hotel and the appartments a bit outdated!

We had booked two adjacent maisonette flats via an Dutch auction site. On the ground floor there are apartments with one sleepingroom. On the second floor are maisonette flats with two sleeping rooms. Because of various supplements in addition to the low auction price, it was still an expensive weekend. Our apartments looked freshly painted and were clean. The beds were good and it was quiet, probably because of bad weather. The pool is small but warm and is open untill 9 pm. The apartments have some specific disadvantages. It is wood frame construction with wooden floors (very noisy) and electric radiators. A towel package costs 15 euro per person. If you have been given for example apartment number 120, there is a very long walk with your luggage (there are luggage carts). There was no hair dryer, you have to shower in the bath. The toilet is located on the second floor in the bathroom. The hotel is not within walking distance of the beach but pretty close to Hollum. An apartment on the ground floor, I would advise against it because of the noisy nature of the first floor. The service is good.

We booked a two night "Valentine's day" arrangement. When we arrived, it took a long time to check in since our reservation had apparently only just arrived. Moreover, although we had booked a room in the hotel, this was unavailable so we were moved to an apartment, which has fewer services (e.g no room service, no hair dryer). The bedroom in the apartment was very cramped and dark. Our arrangement included a five course dinner on one evening, but this was very disappointing so we only ate there one night. The swimming pool was very small and frequently crowded, so we didn't use it.

The only good thing is the location. The town is just outside the Village of Hollum, which is pretty and has a good selection of restaurants. I can recommend Herberg de Swan, where we ate hare and vension at very reasonable prices. It is only a 5-10 minute walk to the centre of the village. 10-15 walk minutes away is Hollum beach. This is very beautiful and has an attractive and popular beach restaurant (The Sunset).
