“Beautiful hotel - in the wrong place”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2008

La Herreria is definitely the best modern hotel we have stayed in, in terms of a stunning modern building, with awesome views across the plains to the mountain range behind.

The lounge was beautiful with great views and lovely modern furniture - very comfortable and stylish.

We stayed in one of the suites, which was luxurious and a great treat in terms of Bang & Olufson TV/DVD/stereo and a two person free stading bath etc but for a hotel which purports to offer a luxury experience, there were definitely problem areas.

The spa was really disappointing - very small, not much going on and not very relaxing. We were very bored after the first half hour. There were no outdoor seating/swimming facilities.

Other aspects of the hotel were unusual; waiting staff in the lounge were very thin on the ground, the restaurant was beyond eccentricity - we weren't given menus at ANY of the meals, just asked how many courses we wanted to each. Each course was then served with an announcement of what it was when it arrived at the table.

My partner was delighted (he had double portions of rare meat, fois gras and fish throughout) - I was starving.

Normally this would be no problem, but the hotel's remote location made finding alternatives difficult (everything was a 20 minute drive away) and we had specifically booked a spa/retreat hotel because we had driven a long way in a two weeks tour and wanted some r&r before going home.

We would give it another go if we were in the area but it definitely wasn't a final destination place for us. It is worth going there for a drink at sunset though - if you could find a member of the bar staff in time!

  • Liked — The room - height of luxury
  • Disliked — The restaurant (but my partner might disagree)

We had heard of the Hotel Spa La Herreria as a mountain resort in the north of Spain with fabulous view and service. We are Norwegians (spoiled) and used to excellent service and accommodation, and thought we would try something special (for a change). Arrived on the 18th January, 2008, and understood right away that we had hit the right spot, after some
doubt relative to environment etc. There was a special atmosphere surrounding the place; the smell og oranges and cinnemanon, the ambiance obvious. Accommodation is great (xxxx), service and food immaculate, - and the view ----! How about "venado a las finas hiervas", together with the house wine from Ribera de Duero? In short: EXCELLENT! - We are coming back, and recommend our friends to do likewise.

We came across La Herreria mentioned briefly in an article in The Guardian in Feb '07. The hotel has just 15 rooms and opened in Nov '06. It's just off the N611, about 86 km from Santander, in the Cantabrica mountains, and even our Garmin satnav couldn't find it. Villanueva de Henares is a tiny little hamlet with perhaps 12 houses, a church and not much else. Judging by the state of the buildings and the roads, it seems that quite a lot of investment has gone into restoring the hamlet, which includes the two 12th century buildings La Herreria now occupies. By Madrid standards, the rooms are very reasonably priced, and also unlike Madrid, breakfast is included. We stayed in the suite (170 euros) which was utterly fab, with a huge amount of space, wonderful furnishings, two B&O TVs, etc. The design conscious will go ape over the transformation: think lots of wood and exposed brickwork, contrasting textures, myriad lighting details and so on. The hotel also includes an upmarket restaurant, although when we stayed, there were no more than two tables occupied. The food was chic rustic with an emphasis on meat and fish, so vegetarians will have a tough time. The wine list was thoroughly OTT, with representatives of just about every bodega around, and bottles ranging from 16 to 600 euros. There was even an H20 list! The hotel also has a spa bit downstairs but there was no sign of it being used. One of the drawbacks of the hotel design is that everything happens indoors (even the loungers next to the pool are behind glass) and I do wonder what it'll be like in the height of the Spanish summer. The same is true of the 1st floor lounge (again a symphony of textures and furnishings) which is pretty much enclosed in glass. Given that we seemed to be the only guests staying, one also wonders about the hotel's viability. Perhaps it's just too off the beaten track for its own good.
