“clean but drawbacks”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2012

the hotel welcome was good, unfortunately no lift and stairs to the living areas. All on the flat-pool, bar ,bungalows(nice instead of appartments)Bar staff reluctant to serve you or disappeared whenever someone went to the bar especially if you had an all inclusive band on,they never smiled!!I had 2 bra's stolen from the room by the housekeeper and just missed her in the act of taking a third as we came back early from breakfast. The food was diabolical even the spanish complained.not a 4 star possible 2.near to beach more than most ,beach lovely and clean and safe for kids.Restuarant very cheap for the canaries a lot cheaper than tenerife

Room Tip: 1076 is good near but not too near the bar pool area. There is a ramp at the side of the shop if you...

We stayed at the HL Rio Playa Blanca from 1st April-5th April. We arrived at 11.00PM(ish), and were a bit underwhelmed with the first impression of the hotel. Nothing fancy, certainly not a 4 star, but it looked reasonable and seemed to be in a fairly good location.

Check in at reception was quick, the receptionist was efficient and helpful, however we were given our keys and sent to find our room by ourself. We had been told that we couldn't use one of the doors on the bungalow as it could be sticky. The rooms consist of bungalows which are dotted around the complex. The whole place it very poorly lit, and we struggled to find our room and open the door in almost pitch darkness. It would have been much easier if we'd have been shown to our rooms.

The rooms are a good size; a kitchenette, lounge area, bedroom and large bathroom, with plenty of storage. Unfortunately, they are quite shabby looking and very poorly kept. The 'sticky door' the receptionist warned us of actually turned out to be a plastic door with the central panel completely kicked in (!) and poorly mended. It didn't seem very secure at all. The bathroom window was also not secure, bizarrely the pane of glass was too small for the frame and there was an inch gap right along the top of the window. It would have been very easy for someone to break in, and given the fact the bungalow was in a dark area, away from the main hotel area, I felt really uneasy in bed at night.

The beds were OK, 2 single beds pushed together but comfortable enough.

The apartments were shabby in other ways; mould on tiles, rust on the side of the bath, etc. Nothing major, and to be fair, the maids came in every day and the rooms were kept spotless.

The facilities in the resort left a lot to be desired. They were just far, far too small to cope with the amount of guests. The bar area was tiny, the bar itself was very small and majorly understaffed. Guests were left standing there for 10 minutes until somebody came to serve them. One day, the queue for the bar was right out of the bar area and up to the pool! This was made worse by the fact that there was NO self service at all; usually at AI resorts there is self service beer, wine and soft drinks. There was none here, so even the children at the hotel had to queue for cola, lemonade, etc. There was a small pool bar, too, but it only opened every now and again. As getting a drink was so difficult, some guests were actually going to the supermarket and buying beer and sangria to drink by the pool, as it was quicker than waiting to be served in the bar. Ice creams were not provided as part of the all inclusive, they were only available to buy from the on site supermarket (every other AI hotel has had small pots of ice cream available as part of the package, all day. So this was disappointing).

The food was pretty poor, on the whole. Breakfast was the best meal. There was plenty of variety; bacon and eggs, sausage, toasts, breads, pastries, pancakes, etc. Also a variety of cereals, yoghurts, and fruit.Once again, the dining room seemed much to small to cope with the amount of guests, and there were long queues for food. The lunches and dinners were, to be entirely honest, dire. Most dishes were labelled simply 'meat in sauce' or 'fish in sauce', the whole place had a whiff of stale onions about it, and the food was greasy and tasted old. I've stayed in plenty of 3 star All Inclusive hotels before, so I don't expect 5 star cuisine, but this was a very low standard. The food wasn't replenished regularly, so went lukewarm under the lights. We ate out almost every lunch and dinner time.

The pool and bar area was kept clean, and the toilets were spotless.

Check out is at 12 noon. There is no storage room to keep luggage once you've checked out, however we were told we could leave it in the reception area until our transfer arrived. We were permitted to use the facilities until we left.

The hotel is about a ten minute walk from a small selection of restaurants and shops, and the smaller beach. There's a steep hill and quite a few steps, so people with limited mobility might struggle. A 20(ish) minute walk down the promenade leads to the main area of Playa Blanca, with plenty of shops, bars, restaurants and other attractions. It's definitely worth a visit, as there's some lovely places there, and a larger beach, which was nicer and less rocky than the smaller beach by the hotel. We went for a few drinks in the Old Mill Irish Bar (above a restaurant on the front) and if you find it, it's a hidden gem. Live music, excellent atmosphere, great selection of drinks and really friendly staff.

Overall, Playa Blanca is gorgeous, and I'd definitely visit again, but I wouldn't return to this hotel.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 1028, which was fairly close to the main bar area and the gate to the beach.

i have just come back from a holiday at the rio playa blanca, just to say the staff are smashing but there is not security at all at this aparthotel , we were in a 2 bedrooms 2 bath room apartment , it was situated at the back of the holiday site so a bit of a walk to the main area , bar restraunt and evening entertainment , unfortunatley when we got back to our bungalow we have bewen broken into , they took anything of value and also not of any value , but the worst was they took our passports and our flight details which scared us , we spent most of our saturday at the local police station not rearly understanding any thing they were saying, but the thieves have had secondhoughts as they came back and returned these documents to us , the left them under the bed so the cleaner could find them
so no more aparthotels for me

Room Tip: make sure youn ask for a room close to the pool

My sister and I stayed in the Rio Playa Blanca in Lanzarote for a week at the end of February, and it really was excellent considereing the price we paid. The whole place was spotless, the staff were very nice and the food was excellent. We were lucky with the weather and spent a lot of time relaxing by the pool, reading our books and sipping cocktails! We loved our bungalow, which was spacious and private, and was bigger and nicer than another one we visited where friends were staying for two months. I would certainly go back to Rio Playa Blanca.

Room Tip: Ask for a bungalow near to the hotel, so that you don't have a long walk back in the dark after...

Stayed for a week last week, the bunglaows were clean but with sockets falling off the walls and lighting not working, it needed some maintenance. Very spacious and comfortable though. Had to carry luggage down stairs from reception and there was no offer of assitance. The pool area was lovely, with plenty of beds, although it did seem a very quiet week. The staff were good but seemed to be limited so were multi tasking which did cause delays in service. Meals were ok, lunch seemed the best. This is the first hotel i've stayed in that didn't offer much of a fruit range at breakfast, only proividing quartered oranges, grapefruit and apples as a rule, no melon?? However, if you asked for bananas they did go and get for you. Breakfast is heaven for those who like cereals, breads, cakes, toast, fried food or ham and cheese. Not great for healthy options.
During meals, the staff, although friendly, were slow to re-set used tables so on more than one occasion I had to get napkins, cutlery etc myself from the trolleys.
Location is great unless you want a sea view, with the centre of town being 1.5k away.
Having stayed at a majority of the the other 4* hotels in the resort, I cannot see how this hotel gets this rating as it is of a lesser standard. Would I stay there again?? Only if there was nothing else on offer at the price I wanted to pay as you get what you pay for

We stayed for a week at the Rio playa Blanca, the bungalows are very clean, staff are friendly. The food is ok the best meal of the day for us was breakfast, please remember we all like different things. We thought we had value for money and had a lovely relaxing time. the beach is a short walk away and is very clean. There was no shortage of sunbeds so you do not need to get up at the crack of dawn to put your towel on a bed. we would go back

Room Tip: Take a travel kettle for your bungalow if you want to make yourself a cuppa.

Stayed at this complex for the month of January we enjoyed the food, loved the chinese also the duck & fish, all cooked in front of you so fresh plus the Canarian night.
We were lucky to be staying a while but the food did not get boring.

Were happy with the location it was easy to catch a bus or walk to the shops harbour, market, beaches etc.
The complex was ok but felt it needed a good scrub down to stop the flies, the "heated" pool was alright for a quick dip!.
The animation team worked hard to entertain (fine if this is what you like)

Bungalows were basic these too could do with a bit of attention a through clean would heip get rid of the ants, and freshen them up, a problem with the sewerage while we were there lasted several days this was unpleasant and obviously an on going problem.

Overall we enjoyed our stay and would return.

Room Tip: Try and get away from A/C unit first row behind reception 1150 -
