“Definitely will return but customer service needs some training! ”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 20, 2014

I stayed at the Sandos Papagayo beach resort (aka Papagayo Arena) for 1 week all inclusive on 31st March with my boyfriend. This was our first holiday without my 7 yr old since we'd met 5 yrs ago. We wanted somewhere with plenty to do and see but also somewhere with good food and hygiene. We landed early after a good flight and arrived around 9.15pm. We'd been pretty excited about the holiday particularly as Bookableholidays.com had put an upgrade request in for us! We hadn't opted to pay the extra for the Elite package as we were trying to save money. However, upon arrival we were greeted by a rather grumpy and abrupt receptionist who continued her conversation for some time before checking us in. She never cracked a smile! Despite this we drew her attention to the upgrade request but were told quite bluntly that "if you want upgrade ... you pay!"

I have to say although we knew we weren't guaranteed an upgrade we were obviously disappointed.

When we arrived at our room (1007 block h) we were pretty shocked. It was very dated and although it was reasonably clean it was nothing like any of the brochure photos (or trip advisor customers photos for that matter!) The bath had rust around the plug, tiles had filthy grout in some areas etc. The tv was older than me! The shower was pretty feeble and very old. It was far from the luxury we'd hoped for.

We had a bottle of water left on the floor in front of the door and the towels were like sandpaper! The "view" was non existant ... our balcony was overlooking the back of the hotel and had a footpath not too far away so people walking past could see in, it also had a wall with a large security fence. Not impressed. All this did not bode well for the relaxing break we needed. We decided against complaining (which in hindsight I wish we had) as we had not paid for a sea view etc so didn't feel it fair to the hotel.

The "Elite" package included quite a few extras ... some of which I feel should be offered all guests at a hotel of this quality such as water in room being replenished. When we asked where we could get bottled water we were told we had to refill the original bottle or buy from vending machines.

It may just have been me but I got the feeling if your wristband wasn't Gold Elite ("normal guests wear blue") then they weren't overly bothered about making your holiday special. We did come across a couple of staff that were polite and happy to chat, in particular Viktor in the main bar. Always had a smile and asked how people were.

When all inclusive I have to say my main request is that food is good and surfaces etc clean. The papagayo scored well on both counts with this. There was an endless team of staff constantly cleaning the hotel, whether it be floors or the gigantic windows. The food was of a good standard for all inclusive however not always hot (a problem I've found with all AI I've stayed in). At breakfast there was always a choice of bacon (although very fatty you could usually find some that was well cooked) beans, tomatoes, eggs (cooked fresh). There was occasionally sausages, but not quite cooked enough for my liking, tomatoes, cold meats, cheeses, toast, salads, fresh olives and dried fruit, yoghurt etc. They also did delicious pancakes (again ... cooked fresh). There was plenty of tea, coffee, fruit juices and fresh fruit too.

Lunch time and dinner time usually had very similar menus. We had everything from seafood paella to lasagna to roast dinners to shark loin! The main buffet restaurant was a bit canteen-like so we walked through and sat in the Italian area every day. It has to be said that the Italian bit with its fresh pasta and pizzas was fantastic and the staff on there were extremely friendly and helpful.

There was also cava and orange juice available throughout the day in reception and some nice seating areas.

We tried the Mexican restaurant but we were unfortunately very disappointed. The food was not very "Mexican" and the bits that were, was not particularly nice. We also went to the Chinese which I thought was better but still not great.

The location of the hotel is good but at the very end of a promenade which takes you to the marina and then further on to playa blanca. It's a pleasant walk, about 15 minutes to the marina and about 1 hr leisurely walk to playa along the beautiful coastline.

We played tennis which was just €5 refundable deposit. This was really good. We also had a safe which you paid €\£20 deposit for and €3 per day to use. We used the spa which was included for sauna, steam room and jacuzzi. The sauna was ok but the steam room wasn't very hot and neither was any of the 3 Jacuzzis. I had a pedicure on my penultimate day and this was lovely but the lady who did it did not speak English and my Spanish is not great so it was a silent 40 minutes! Must learn more Spanish! You could also get pool towels free of charge but along with the safe deposit box and water we weren't told about this on our arrival and found out through other guests!

On our departure day we booked a courtesy room free of charge for 3.30. You only get half an hour so it was a bit of a rush to get two of us showered and changed especially as the room was quite far from reception. However, we appreciated this extra as other hotels I've been to charge for this.

All in all, despite being disappointed with our room we would still recommend and return ourselves. I think I would look in to upgrading although I am in two minds as we really did feel second rate customers which I don't think was the intention but unfortunately how I felt and I don't think we should have had to pay extra to be smiled at more!

Spent 11 nights at this hotel and I must say it was very enjoyable and value for money, The food was first class and very friendly and helpful staff. It was a little overrun by kids but then again we went during a school holiday period and after all it is a family hotel. Nothing wrong with the kids but there are a few irresponsible parents who dont give a damn what their kids are up to as long as there not being pestered by them. The room was very nice but we were a little disappointed that we did not have a sea view, the reception staff did offer us an alternative but we decided to stay in room H1001 as it was close to everything.

We read some reviews before going to this hotel and some people complained about the food, I don't know what they eat at home but there was absolutely nothing wrong with any of the food on offer, in fact we have been on other 4* all inclusive holidays and this must rate as one of the best.

We have only been back for 2 days and are already considering booking again for late September, hopefully not so many kids about at that time, as I have already said nothing wrong with kids in fact their presence eliminates the snobbery that you get in Adult only hotels.

Hopefully we will be able to request a sea view room when we book for September, we were offered room B17 as an alternative and would definitely take a room in blocks A or B on our return.

Thank you Sandos Papagayo for a great holiday, also Jet2 were excellent.

Fabulous hotel, spotlessly clean, lovely food and very friendly and helpful staff. Travelled with 12 and 10 year old who enjoyed the weeks break as much as us. Entertainment was limited but good. Overall a lovely relaxing break we would definitely visit again.

Room Tip: Block C looks onto the sea and the views are lovely.

We arrived after a great Jet2 flight but had pre-booked a private minibus due to previous guests saying that the hotel was the last drop off and took 1 1/2 hours to reach the hotel. Our transfer was 25 mins. Upon arrival we were greeted warmly and welcoming and checked in fairly quickly. There are no porters in this hotel, and so we were advised on how to find our rooms. We booked 2 rooms and emailed the hotel beforehand to request 2 roomstogether, which we were given. Our rooms were in block C 525 and 526. Lovely views out to Fuerteventura.
We also upgraded to the Elite package and so had the extra luxuries; guaranteed see view, Cava upon arrival, bathrobes and slippers, sweets and chocolate in rooms, private breakfast room, VIP lounge (premium branded drinks, newspapers, wifi, snacks), A fridge stocked initially with drinks, and a fresh bottle of water each day, also tea, coffee replenished daily.
The rooms were very spacious and exceptionally clean. Previous reviewers stated that they thought they were a bit dated and in need of modernising, but I thought they were very nice and in a Canarian style. The bathrooms were very spacious too.
The complex itself is very large and built on several floors on the hillside. It takes a while to become familiar with the layout. Everywhere is very clean and the staff are very nice. The pool areas are large and around all 5 pools as well as several other areas. They are all nice and there are plenty of sunbeds dotted around. There are signs to inform guests that sunbed reservations are not allowed, but everyone does it.
There are several activities for everyone to enjoy such as: table tennis, pool, football, basketball, tennis court, aqua aerobics in the pool, bingo in the outdoor lounge, nightly shows (although we didn't see them).
The food was nice, but that's all. Nothing special. We ate in the International, the Mexican (which is the snack bar during the day), the Italian, and the Chinese. We didn't visit the French restaurant. There was plenty of choice in all the restaurants, and the food was hot enough. What we didn't like was the fact that you are not shown to a table, its a free for all, and you have to find a table yourself. In peak times, its a scramble to find one. The drinks aren't served to you either, you have to get them yourself. It would be nicer if there were staff available to find tables for you rather than you having to rush to grab a table before someone else does!
The VIP lounge was a added extra for us, but to be honest, I'm not sure it was worth the extra money. The room itself was very nice, but was more like an Airport VIP lounge! There wasn't much atmosphere either so we only visited it on one occasion.
All in all a lovely weeks stay at this hotel, and yes I would recommend it.

Room Tip: Block C is central to the hotel and all have a sea view.

On arrival we were allocated a room E1072 which faced the sea on 10th floor, furthest away from reception. It was very tired and worn, had a beautiful view with double balcony. Didnt use pools, decided to sunbathe in roof top sun areas. Loads of sun beds available all day. Food was good, especially the pasta which was made especially for you while you wait. Tried the mexican which we thought was excellent and therefore went twice. This is situated in the daily snack bar and they do a brilliant job of transforming it every night into a mexican experience. Plenty of places a relax aroung the hotel and have a quite drink, also serverl bars to choose from. Views from the hotel are stunning. Weather was brilliant. Have stayed at Rubicon Palace and prefer that, but would like to try Timanfaya Palace next time. If you get a good price, its worth trying the sandos. There are nice walks along coastal promanade to the marina, however the hotel has a courtesy bus but it only takes you as far as dorada beach which is still about 30 minute walk if you want to go as far as playa blanca town. (not much there, few eating places and usual tat shops) however its a lovely walk. I would say this hotel is between 3 and 4 star, just needs updating .

Room Tip: most rooms have a sea view, but would avoid G and H rooms overlooking papagayo beach through metal f...

This was our 3rd visit to the Sandos, having visited twice last year and, if anything, it was our best stay yet.

As always, we upgraded to Royal Elite and thought this was great. Last October, we were disappointed as we struggled to get a seat in the Royal Elite Bar but this was not a problem this time as the lounge had been extended. We also appreciated the quieter breakfast in the Chinese restaurant. Other perks included use of the safe at no extra charge, tea and coffee making facilities and regular replacements of bottled water.

The food was as good as ever, with a massive choice at every meal. The food was always hot and was replaced regularly so was always fresh. Our son particularly enjoyed the freshly cooked pasta whilst I enjoyed the fish and paella. There was always a range of tasty salads, fresh vegetables, different types of meat and fish plus an array of desserts, including different flavours of ice cream.

The dining room did get very busy (the hotel was full as it was the Easter holidays) but it was slightly quieter and calmer at the Italian restaurant at the far end. We never had to queue for more than a minute but have to agree with other comments that it is noisy.

For the first time, we visited the Mexican restaurant, having previously been put off as it doubles as a snack bar during the day. Really glad we gave it a try as we thoroughly enjoyed the change (and a real effort was made to update it from being a snack bar). Didn't try the Chinese Restaurant.

Our room was at the top of block C, with a fabulous view out to sea and over to Fuerteventura. The beds were very comfy with memory foam mattresses. On the whole, there was little noise (just the occasional inconsiderate guest making too much noise returning to their room).

Our 10 year old son really enjoyed the daytime entertainment and took part in football, tennis, table tennis and boules. He also made good use of the table tennis tables, pool tables and X Box with the friends he made.

We never struggled to get a sun bed, even when we went out for the morning and returned for the afternoon. The areas around the pools (particularly the heated pool) did get busy but we preferred the quieter sun terraces.

The staff make the hotel; they are so friendly and helpful. No, they don't all speak fluent English (how many of us speak fluent Spanish!!) but their attitude is fantastic.

We went on the Yellow Submarine trip, which was arranged by the hotel and would highly recommend this.

All in all, a great hotel - we hope to return later in the year.

Room Tip: Blocks A-D look straight out to sea.

Nice hotel, but very big!
Mainly English and Germans (is it why the food is so bad? ;-)
Definitely more of a family hotel than a hotel for young couples.

The-
The food
The food (yes... it's that bad!)
The food (I had better at school)
The bed (used to be a nice king bed size, but the mattress now looks like a gruyere cheese because it is definitely worn out)
The people reserving their seats at 7am and then go back to bed: At 9am no more seats nearby the pool.
The Spa!!! (people getting out of the sauna or hammam and jump back into the jacuzzies! (I actually never saw anyone else taking a shower while I was in the spa!

The +
Royal elite service (especially for the breakfast in the morning (only time of the day where the food is actually good))
The room and the view
Papagayo beaches next door
The housekeepers, waiters and bartenders are nice!

Room Tip: Definitely block B!
