Just returned from our 4th visit to this hotel and already looking to book again.Always thought, I would never go to the same place twice and would never go all inclusive. Have had to eat my words! The standard on cleanliness, friendliness of the staff and above all the quality and variety of the food just can't be bettered, and up to its usual standard. There is so much choice, it's mind boggling and all beautifully presented and fabulous to eat. Great array of drinks, loved the Piña Coladas and the Larios Gin and Tonic. The new chill out bar is lovely. It was hot while we were there and was great to sit out under the stars enjoying the company of friends in such a lovely setting. We used last minute travel to take us from the airport to the hotel and back. It cost 90 euros and between 4 of us, was good value and totally reliable. Much quicker than taking the free transfer with First Choice.
All in all, we had another fabulous break at this lovely hotel. The staff cannot do enough for you, we can't wait to return again. Well done Papagayo Arena!!

Room Tip: The hotel will try and accommodate you, re room choice. We have stayed in G,H B block and also in o...

Lovely hotel in a great nice location. The downside was the entertainment which was poor and more than amateur. The brochure states that there is a 24 hour snack bar...don't be fooled this, as it shuts I the evening changing to the Mexican Restaurant. It closes n the morning about 8 and does not open again till 11. The food is good in the buffet restaurant with a good selection of hot and cold foods. Would definitely go again. If you want a relaxing break with no where much to, then this is the place to be.

Just got home from Sandos a very large hotel the good points everywhere clean, very friendly staff, very good food some of the best we have had in the Canaries, very well cooked, nice & plain & always hot, loads of salads & fruit. Our room was number C231 over looking the sea cleaned every day. The adult bar is good for a relaxing drink. Now the bad points dinner at 7.30pm far too late for us. You can not swim until 10 o' clock I was told to get out of the pool at 9.45 still so many people putting towels on beds early & not using them It is not a beach front as one would imagine just an area cleaned of boulders. Only a few things to do in the day, no music apart from the club song. Night entertainment didn't start until after 10 sometimes 10.20, the chairs are so hard there they are back breakers & nowhere to put your glass. Evening meal people were still coming in with their shorts & swimming costumes on, Overall we enjoyed the holiday but would not return as it did not have the buzz for us never seen so many unhappy folks in my life.

Room Tip: C block over looking the sea but the rooms can get very hot at night

Have never experienced all inclusive and was unprepared for the variety of food and drink on offer. So much choice and different offerings every day. Was impressed with how quiet it was despite the free flow of alcohol. Lots of couples, young and more mature, and families with toddlers. Didnt like the brown tiles terracotta and orange decor but loved the location of our room. Slept with doors open to hear the waves! A great place for lounging around relaxing reading then rolling off the sunbed for more food. And a drink. Definitely would return. Weather was perfect too.

Just got back from a week at Sandos Papagayo Beach Resort. First time in Canaries. Didn't know what to expect - had heard of "Lanzagrotty" but found the whole island lovely and not at all Kiss-Me-Quick/English pubby. Booked with First Choice and found all aspects of their service very efficient, from check-in at Gatwick to very helpful reps at the hotel. I travelled with my husband and we are both fussy travellers and expect a 4 star hotel to be 4 star and the SPBR definitely is. We found the entire complex to be spotlessly clean absolutely everywhere. Other reviewers who have found chipped tiles / broken items must have been spending their holiday walking around with a magnifying glass.

The first thing that strikes you on arrival is the sheer vastness of the place. There seem to be lounge areas and bars and pools wherever you look. The decor is fresh and cosy. It's a solid, well constructed building and in the bedrooms there is no noise from neighbours (the only time we heard anything was if there was a bit of noise in the corridor, which was rare). The only noise was the lull of the waves on the shore which made a welcome break from the traffic noises of home. There were plenty of lifts for those who can't do stairs, and although the hotel is split level in several places the walkways have slopes as well as steps for those with limited mobility (or pushchairs). the promenade that leads into Playa Blanca is also flat, although a little up hill in one or 2 places.

We did a lot of research beforehand and upgraded to Royal Elite and also emailed to ask for a high floor with a double rather than twin bed, which the hotel replied to and obliged by. We were in block B which was perfectly positioned close to the back gate of the hotel, which leads to the little beach and the main promenade walk into Playa Blanca. On arrival the hotel had no record of us booking the upgrade, which I don't believe is their fault as I had amended the booking sometime after the original. The reception staff sorted this out without a fuss and the whole thing was sorted out within a couple of minutes. They also made sure that the relevant goodies were sent straight to our room. It is a testiment to the efficiency of the staff there that if there was ever anything we needed it got sorted out immediately and with great attention to detail. On one occasion we asked for a change of mattress as my husband hates anything that isn't like a brick to sleep on and the mattress was much softer on his side. We arrived back at our room literally a couple of minutes later to find the mattress had already been changed and the bed linen stripped and re-arranged with the arty fan-shape that they like to do with the top cover.

The Royal Elite lounge was a welcome retreat, cool and tranquil away from the sunshine and buzz of the swimming pools. The lounge became the centre of our routine and added to the relaxing experience. This was important for us as the hotel is very much a family hotel, and as a youngish couple we were definitely in the minority so it was nice to escape from the armies of toddlers and pushchairs. When we were there it was just after the end of the Easter hols so seemed to be about 50% families with toddlers, 40% golden oldies and 10% others. The Brit brigade definitely seemed to dominate but there were a fair few Spaniards around, ans possibly Germans. Wifi was excellent in and around the Royal Elite lounge, even coping with the demands of many Silver Surfers with their iPads and Kindle Fires. In some areas it seemed that the surrounding hotel gave a better signal, which we were able to connect to.

The food on offer, and in some form for 24 hours a day, was vast. If you're a bit of a foodie the quality at times was not exactly Gordon Bleu, but on the other hand there was so much variety it was hard to leave hungry. The low point of the cuisine was the Italian restaurant, which we were surprised by as it gets good reviews, and the Oriental buffet (In reality just Chinese) was sadly not even up to Tesco's Finest standard. We still had a good stab at it though! Breakfast was lovely and the staff always smiling. Service was supposed to end at 10:30 but they were still putting out freshly cooked food at that time and never made you feel rushed.

Tip 1: the safe is a bit of a faff. The door opens with the hinge on the right, which baffled us for ages as we were trying to pull it the wrong way and thought it was stuck. You have to put your hand underneath where the digital display is and pull. Then you put your key inside the back of the safe door and turn it - it will only work one way. We frequently found our door wouldn't close when keying in the code but found if you press firmly on the door edges it would work fine. With Royal Elite the safe is free but you still have to pay a €20 deposit, which is returned at the end so don't forget to take the key out when checking out.

Tip 2: if booking an excursion on the Lanzarote Vision service that goes around the island, bear in mind that it goes anticlockwise and will take about 2 hours to reach anywhere and that's after you've gone into Playa Blanca to board it in the first place. The coaches are air conditioned but still pretty hot and not good if you suffer from travel sickness. People often say don't go for the First Choice /Thomson tours as they're expensive but we found them to be very well organised with excellent tour guides and cool, spacious coaches.

Tip 3: the little beach at the back of the hotel doesn't look much on photos but is lovely. But for a spectacular beach head for the Playas Papagayo - a 10 to 15 minute walk. You need good trainers for the walk, especially if scaling the side of the hotel which is quicker but quite a scramble. The muddy beaches are supposed to be at the far end of the 5 coves, but we found the far end of the first beach was about 50% togs off and the second beach (a further good 5-10 minutes beyond) was 100% nuddy, so not sure what was going on at beaches 3, 4 and 5!
