“relaxing holiday”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2013

lovely hotel just returned from having a very relaxed 1 weeks all inclusive holiday. most staff are a credit to the hotel the only 1 I had a problem with was 1 girl in the spa who continued with her phone call and turned her back on us as we approached her desk , we did have spa treatment Jacuzzi sauna Turkish sauna (these are free but you are not told we found out by accident) on arrival we were directed to E Block which was a hike and we had a view of barren rocky land however we had a lovely big room and very spacious and so quiet at night, the food was help yourself buffet plenty of choice you can book the Chinese restaurant and there is a French restaurant if you visit the French restaurant you do pay (but if all inc you get a discount). The pools were lovely and different levels for sunbathing plenty of sunbeds entertainment was ok but they do look after the children, and evening entertainment is laid on a bit club like - not for us but was popular with others , 4 levels in the hotel and lots of different seating areas to suit every ones needs , you get a map on arrival and we put our cases in room then got our bearing it is a huge hotel so it does take a couple of days to get used to it but plenty of lifts if I have 1 little gripe I wish they had steak knives to eat with as the normal knife did not have much serration on them . special thanks to the waiters/waitresses and the bar staff they did an excellent job . also free shuttle bus to take you to marina ( not much there but a nice walk along sea front,

Room Tip: E block large rooms and very quiet at nights sleep

Credit where credit’s due – this is an excellent hotel located on the eastern most extremity of the resort of Playa Blanca and literally within easy walking distance of Papagayo beach. Do bring sensible shoes though as the paths down to the beach aren’t easy going.

Back to the hotel. It’s quite a big complex and for the first couple of days it can be a bit of a challenge figuring out where everything is; but it’s all part of the fun and things soon fall into place. In fact a bigger challenge might be figuring out what you’re going to do next as there is so much choice in terms of where to eat and entertainment you need those couple of days to figure it all out.

Lets quickly go through the detail. The rooms are spacious, very clean and well maintained. They’re modern and comfortable with TV, hairdryer, etc with everything you would expect in a four star hotel. Oh and of course they are cleaned and changed every day. Nothing is too much trouble so if you want extra towels, etc just ask.

The dining arrangements are very good and the food is first class. The whole experience generally revolves around the main dining room where there’s plenty of choice for everyone with some options to have meat, etc cooked while you wait. Most if not all the clients in the hotel seem to be on an all inclusive arrangement and the beer and wine flows freely. Pace yourself! As an extension to the main dining room there are several themed restaurants so if you fancy Italian, French, Chinese or Mexican cuisine then your lucks in. Note you do have to book some of them in advance and the French restaurant attracts an additional charge.

On the entertainment side there are five swimming pools around the hotel though two of them are more paddling pool sized than eight lane Olympic! Still there’s plenty of choice. Only one of them is heated though so do test the water first – the ones that aren’t heated take a bit of getting used to. There also a spa with gymnasium attached which is well equipped. This is also where you do your towel exchange each day. There are several bars around the pool area and these serve up drinks and ice cream pretty well from sun up to sun down. Alcoholic drinks from eleven am onwards.

For evening entertainment there are usually one or two shows taking place or a pianist or bingo or something. There’s always something going on and again several bars to choose from – one of them being outdoors forming an outdoor theatre.

If you do get bored with being fed, ‘watered’ and entertained then there’s a courtesy bus that does a couple of runs into Playa Blanca each morning and afternoon. It’s a full sized coach so plenty of room and if it does fill up then the driver just turns round and comes back for a second run.

In summary you can’t really go wrong with this hotel as it caters for everyone whether that’s couples or families; older or younger. We stayed there from the 3rd to the 14th of February 2013 and apart from a couple of days when we grumbled about the weather (it was cloudy) we had a really good holiday.

Room Tip: Same tip as always. Get a room that's away from reception and the bars

Just returned from honeymoon ( received no special treatment although hotel advised by travel company ). Rooms and views from blocks A, B, C & D very good, hotel and outdoor areas kept spotlessly clean, plenty of sunbeds but music from entertainment team can be heard in all pool areas, bars very pleasant to enjoy the views. Cleaners very pleasant but reception staff not overly friendly. Food a little disappointing, soup and a roll or couple of pieces of pizza the only thing on offer for late arrivals, for main meals the salad and sweet bars were unimaginative and never seemed to change from day to day. Although it seemed a large area, half of food was duplicated. We have stayed at other all inclusive hotels in the Canaries and Greece and the food has been better.

Room Tip: Any room in blocks A-D the higher the better

This hotel is fantastic value for money.
Firstly the moment we arrived we were made to feel very welcome and got the room we requested before in an email. C block 425. Perfect sea view.
The room was spotless and very large with two 3/4 beds pushed together. Lovely sized terrace and beautiful bathroom. There is a fridge and safe. The safe costs 3 euros a day but I could not chance not having one. I do think the safe should be free.
The hotel is huge and took us a couple of days to find everything, but it was all fun.
The food!!!!! Oh my!! so much choice and perfectly cooked.
Breakfast; bacon, eggs, tomatoes, beans, omlettes plain and cheese to name a few. Plus continental, toast and cereal. Spoilt for choice.
Lunch; roast chicken, goose, steak and numerous fish. Plus lovely salads, soups. Deserts; ice cream, cakes, fruit, cream yoghurts to name a few. Next door in the Italian you can have spaghetti dishes made to order and the pizzas are lovely.I had spaghetti carbonara one day, it was delicious.
Dinner; equally as delicious. One night there was Roast beef, chicken, duck with all the trimmings too. The list is endless honestly. We absoloutly loved it.
There are five pools, the top one where games are held is heated, although still was quite cold. The animation don't bother you to join in if you don't want to either.
We only went to one show El Divo and they were very good. We loved The chill bar for the ambiance, just a shame it was a bit chilly up there.
The green room is for adults only and did get quite busy but you could always find two seats and we met some lovely people by doing this.
There is a bar called Canarian which has a terrace attached and there is some entertainment held in there too.
This is a lovely friendly hotel and the staff are fabulous. No waiting at the bar only maybe 5 mins at the most. Oh and the drinks were very very strong so do be careful. I drank the gin n tonic and it was like Gordons, my husband asked for Bacardi and got it. Didn't drink much wine but found the white ok, the cava was lovely.
There is a lovely walk to Rubicon Marina from the back gate and it takes about 30 mins. On Thursday and Saturday is a very good market. You can get a shuttle bus outside front and they will give you a time table. This takes you into Playa Blanca, about 10 mins. Beautiful Marina, shops, restaurants. We got the bus down and walked all the way back. It's a good 40 mins that's all.
You can eat and drink all day if you want and trust me some did!!
Also there is a snack bar need the pool where you can have burgers, chips salads etc.
There are people returning year after year. We don't usually do this as we like to try different places. Maybe one day we would though.
Give this hotel a go i'm sure you won't regret it.

Room Tip: We picked c block because of the sea view and high up. Plus it's quieter and you can actually ju...

This was our first visit to this Gem hotel but it will not be the last.
The staff always have a smile and a hello when you pass them in the corridors no matter what time of day.
The pool areas were huge with plenty of sunbeds and spaces to relax by the pool or on the sunterraces.
The Italian, Chinese and Mexican resturants were a bonus and we visited them on a number of occasions. The French resturant was first class and the food was excellent quality we paid 42E for 2 3 course top quality meals. We had pancakes in the grill bar at 4pm and coffes machines with buscuits and cakes were available there as well as in the Canarian bar most of the day.

The rooms were spacious, the only niggle being that the beds wre very hard, we were in c block and overlooked the sea and althougth we were caught up in the storm this did not cause any problems in our room, the lift was out for a while.but we needed the exercise after eating all the lovely food.
Ladies if you have space in your suitcase that a few coathangers this was the only thing lacking in the room, there were about 10 in the wardrobes for 2 people, this was not enough if you like hanging most of your clothes up.This is not a problem exclusive to Sandos I always take more hangers, most hotels don't seem to provide enough.
The bars were nicely situated with a terrace along the Canarian bar to sit and watch the sunset. The chairs were comfy although a bit tired and in need of repair or replacement.

We spent our time in The Green Bar after dinner this was an adult only bar and although there were very few children at the hotel when we were there I can imagine people without kids would find it a great place to escape to in the months when more children were around.
We met a number of people who were on return visits and I think that speaks for itself. We will definately be returning there each time we have a holiday in Lanzarote. .

Having read all the reviews we can agree that the standard of this hotel is very good. Like most hotels, if you look very closely, you can find faults e.g cracked tiles, but this is general wear and tear and certainly won't spoil your holiday as the overall appearance is very impressive.
We particularly liked the heated pool and the many bars. You can get a lovely creamy Cappucino from 2 bars inside.
The food was very good but the desserts were unimaginative and of little variety but, if you can wait until 4pm you can get freshly made pancakes in the pool bar (worth waiting for!).
We had requested a twin room at the time of booking but the memory foam double bed we had was absolutely huge (and comfortable) so this was no problem and the maid service was excellent.
The location is good with a large sandy beach 15 minutes one way and a nice 40 minute walk to Playa Blanca the other way but if you're into nightclubs this is not the place for you. Just outside the hotel back gate is a beach which, although very stoney, is good for a quick dip in the sea!
The jacuzzi and sauna were free but the safe was not!
The only real downsides that we found were firstly, that the entertainment (theatre) area was 'uncomfortable' with no tables, hard chairs and was open to the elements on one side (although, the 'professional' acts were very good).
Secondly, we had to use the microwave at every meal to heat up our food.
Summing up, we would definately return and would definately recommend the Sandos Papagayo for a good value holiday.

Room Tip: We were in Block A which was nice and quiet and facing the sea (as most are) but a fair distance wit...

Great choice of food. My Husband emailed ahead and asked for quie, sea view room and we were not dissapointed we got C block. It was my 50th Birthday whilst there and again in the email my Husband mentioned this and after a lovely walk to the marina came back to find a bottle of champagne left in the room. Don't bother with the computers as we also found them very slow or took our money but didn't work. Hotel is 15 minute walk away from the Marina along the beach front and another 15 minutes to down town Playa Blanca, plenty of benches to stop for a break if needed, but only 4 euro's in a taxi. Snack bar is open from 11pm til 7am where you can get free beer and wine. All inclusive finishes in the bars at 11pm although they don't close til after midnight but you need to pay for drinks then. Baileys is not included (2 euros).
