“Absolutely fabulous Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 9, 2014

We have just returned from a weeks holiday at The Volcan Hotel after having a fantastic time. I am usually a 'homebird' who is always ready for home after 7 days but could have stayed another week - I just didnt want to leave! We originally stayed in room 321 which overloooked the Marina, a brilliant room with fantastic views but we were offered an upgrade to The Club at a reduced rate for the last 3 days. WOW!! this was like another world. Very select! and has someone said at breakfast - 'Another day in Paradise'
The staff on reception, the waiters, porters, chambermaids were second to none and always had a smile for you. The buffet food was excellent with plenty of choice. The amenities were great, even had a little playground and clubhouse for children.
The only couple of complaints were the fact that sunbed cushions were left out 24/7 and were badly stained and also tea and coffee replenishments were charged for after the first day. These were pointed out on the questionnaire at the end of the holiday and by the time we got home we had an email saying that these points would be looked at.
A thoroughly fantastic Hotel which hopefully we will be returning to in the near future.
Definitely check out The Club and upgrade if you can afford it, well worth the money.

Room Tip: Room 321 in the normal part of the Hotel and 667 or higher level in The Club - both had fantastic vi...

We Recently returned from the Hotel Volcan after a short winter break. We had previously stayed here about 10 years ago and in the interim, very little has changed, the Hotel is without doubt showing a little wear and tear but overall service was polite and professional. The accommodation is generous and if as we found the weather isn't great there is ample room to lounge around without getting cabin fever.
Facilities are good without being great, Breakfast Buffet is extensive and operates efficiently, likewise with the Buffet Dinner which at €20.00 per person is good value.
If you are looking for a 5* break, this unfortunately is not it, but if the rate offered compares favourably with other good 4* properties then this will most likely fit the bill. the location is excellent, two mins walk from the nearby Marina offering lots of eating opportunities and a very pleasant 15 min walk along the seafront to Playa Blanca. the one major problem is the WIFI, it is really poor, better around the reception are but slow enough to drive you mad in general. This is a problem which should be rectified without further delay.

Room Tip: If you are paying extra for a balcony, make sure it offers more than two chairs in a cramped space.

The purpose of our visit was two fold; a family holiday with myself, girlfriend and 7 month old daughter, and as a recycle for a possible diving club trip.

On arrival at the hotel you walk through a very impressive 'monastery' type hall lit by candles and the soft sound of singing monks - sounds tacky but is quite cool.

The main reception is housed in a large round 5 storey atrium (from the outside it's supposed to resemble a volcano) that also has a few gift shops, an impressive jungle wall and home to the pub and a more chilled cafe bar.

The reception staff were courteous and we were shown to our room. The room was a decent size and they'd remembered to include a cot bed for the baby and were thoughtful enough to leave us as a bottle warmer.

I wouldn't say that it is the most lavish hotel room I've ever stayed in but it was more than adequate and reasonable value for money.

They had kindly placed us in a room next to the children's pool and not far from the playground. As we were visiting in January all the pools were very cold including the heated pool and only a few brave soles went for a dip. On the few very warm days the paddling pool reached a bearable temperature for a few minutes.

By far the best pool was the one located around the buffet restaurant. The sun loungers here are much better than the old dirty ones found in other parts.

We did pop to the spa where they have a small heated indoor pool / jacuzzi where we managed to take our daughter for a swim. We had to give staff a bit of gentle persuasion not to be charged 7 euros each for the 10 mins we wanted to use it for.

The hotel is situated in close proximity to the marina and pushing the buggy there wasn't a problem. There are quite a few decent restaurants in the area, I would recommend a visit to 'Little Italy' and try their volcano pizza. Although there are quite a few British people, we didn't come across any that sometimes give us Brits a poor reputation. There is also a scenic walk along the coast that takes you into and past playa blanca.

As the week went on the hotel definitely grew on me, there seemed to be ever new things to discover and we never got bored.

We stayed in the hotel on a b&b basis and the breakfast had a great variety, was very fresh and had something that appealed to most nationalities - mainly English, German and Spanish. The only disappointment was the egg station was undermanned and the toasters took forever.

One evening we decided to eat in the hotel Italian, it was very disappointing. Both myself and girlfriend ordered a pizza which tasted more like cheese on toast. I asked for a glass of red wine which was served at near freezing point. The table of oaps next to us didn't seem to thrilled either with their meat and fish dishes, one described it as "very ordinary". It was pretty pricey too!

We did have a quick nosey at the buffet in the evening which looked okay but probably not worth the 20 euro price tag when you can eat a la carte in marina for less (unless you have a huge appetite).

Scuba Diving

I went for two dives one morning at Rubicon Divers which was a 10 minute walk to the Marina. We did two local dives both of which were ideal for new or inexperienced divers. I was pleasantly surprised by the abundance of fish of the 2nd dive at 'Flamingo'. From talking to a few other customers that had dived quite a few times around the island the best dive sites were to be found near Puerto del Carmen. Rubicon have a boat permanently moored there and will drive you there in their mini bus. The facilities at the dive centre were exceptional and they have clearly spent thousands developing their technical side. They offered rebreather and standard tech courses and the staff all seemed pleasant enough. The rib to the dive sites was comfortable, fast and easy to dive from. The main purpose for the dive was to decide whether we would organise a trip for our dive club www.oysterdiving.com. I think the short answer is yes and I think it would be great for some of our newer divers. In January the water was 18 degrees and I found that in a 7mm wetsuit I just about coped, but a few of the divers were a little chilly. I think we will arrange our trip in September or October when the water will be a few degrees warmer (it's the Atlantic) so will never reach Red Sea temperatures. I don't think we will stay at the Volcan though and probably aim for something a little more affordable for our club members.

Summary

A good hotel for OAPs wanting to escape the British winter and great for couples and families. If you want uber luxury then you probably want to look elsewhere. For diving its a good destination for new divers, or if only one person in the family/couple wishes to do a few relaxing dives.

Stayed here for 7 nights with a friend for a week of relaxation away from our busy work life.
We were not disappointed, check in was quick, effortless and very friendly. Mamosa on arrival yum, welcome pack and activity list for the week.
We had a garden room (122) beside the pool and close to the back exit on to the marina, very handy.
Room was spacious, spotless and great amenities. Balcony over looked the marina at sunset it was stunning.
Breakfast was effortless and superbly organised, no wait for tables, and the selection was second to none, staff were fantastic and to have, cava and rose cava as well as Bloody Mary option for breakfast was outstanding I thought.
Activities were great from yoga and tai chi to cheese and wine, sushi making classes, painting and cocktail making classes, superb fun. Ida and Sara were superb and first rate at their job, special thanks to them.
Night was fun from bingo to flamenco to tribute rock bands all very good. David the bar waiter was very efficient in service and did a fab job on busy nights. Maybe a quiz night to more people to interact may be good?
Pools were well kept although as previously said the wind was very strong and leaves from the beautiful gardens were everywhere but constantly cleaned up. Pool was cold but I like a brisk dip on a warm day so I loved it lol.
Plenty of sun beds in all levels of the hotel and for those moaners they are in the process of all being replaced.
All in all a fabulous week and cannot wait to return.
Thanks again to all who run a fantastic operation.

This is the third time we have stayed at this wonderful hotel. We stay in the club volcan area which has lovely rooms with spectacular views. Our room was on the 6th floor over looking the marina. The added luxury of the private pool area, private lounge, dining room and bar are well worth the extra. As mentioned by others the breakfasts are fabulous with a huge choice of continental meats, cheeses, fruits, cakes etc plus freshly cooked hot breakfasts made to order. The staff were very friendly and very professional. We stayed half board and thoroughly enjoyed the evening meals every night. It is in the form of a buffet with plenty to choose from. Meat and fish are cooked fresh on a griddle in front of you. The fish was superb as was the Gazpacho which we had every night! We think Volcan is the best hotel in Playa Blanca and the best situated;we have stayed on the island several times so feel we can comment. We will definitely be returning.

I stayed here with my mum for a couple of days as a suprise mini break for her birthday whilst we were in Lanzarote. Really nice hotel, very friendly staff, we were made to feel very welcome. We had a twin garden room which was spacious and well appointed with nice touches. Breakfast was yummy with a wide variety of choice. The sun terraces had a very relaxed feel with lots of nice chill out areas. The whole hotel appeared clean and well appointed,(although the pool attendants seemed to be fighting a losing battle due to the strong winds blowing leaves into it). I'd have no hesitation in reccomending it

My husband and I have stayed at this hotel 20 times. We would not choose anywhere else in our retirement. The whole ambience of the spacious grounds and the nearby marina is so relaxing. All the staff are so pleasant and obliging-nothing is too much trouble. Breakfast buffet is superb and any requests for hot food can be cooked fresh. Evening meals which we have sampled occasionally have plenty of choice but we also visit the various restaurants on the Marina where staff are also very obliging. One can amble around the grounds of this hotel without having to use stairs because where there are steps there are also carefully angled slopes or lifts. Most suitable for pushchairs as well as for those of us who have had re-placement knees!! In fact the whole promenade from east to west in Playa Blanca has also been designed for those who find
steps difficult. Very clever and full marks for that. Also the prices of taxis over the past 7years
have only risen 50c.We know this as there are several Sports Bars in the Papagaiyo Centre if
you feel you are missing any important rugby or football matches. Some of them also show ''Strictly C.D.'' Ferries also cross to Fuertoventura every half hour.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a sea view looking over the straits to Fuertoventura

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
This luxury five star hotel, the Hotel Volcán Lanzarote, has a prime location on the seafront and together with the “Marina Rubicón” yachting harbour it constitutes a tourist resort in the southern part of the island - an area that forms part of the UNESCO’s “World Network of Biosphere Reserves”. The hotel is located just 10 km from the Timanfaya National Park, 900 metres from the picturesque fishing village of Playa Blanca, where you will find shopping centres, bars and restaurants, and just 30 minutes from the International Airport of Arrecife. Andrés Piñeiro, the chief architect of the project, chose a design based on a complex of classical buildings that are a true reflection of the typical architectural style of the island. The design of the hotel is reminiscent of a typical village of Lanzarote, with romantic patios, traditional courtyards and secluded spots, together with the magnificent hotel entrance which is a replica of the Teguise church of “Ntra. Sra. de Guadalupe”. With its unique architecture and the distinguished service of a luxury hotel, the Hotel Volcán Lanzarote is an icon within the high end segment of the tourism sector. ... more   less
