“Perfect family break in an excellent hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2010

Just returned from spending Christmas in the Gran Castillo and we had a fantastic time. We travelled with our two children( 2&4) and they loved their time there(and therefore so did we!).Booked a week before after finding a cheap flight and were a little apprehensive after reading the mixed reviews..A lot of people commented on the food being a concern, we didnt see this at all. It is worth noting that it is "proper" food and not benidorm style chips with every meal so if this is what you perfer, this may not be the right place for you.
Other concerns were rude staff, and we didn't encounter this once during our stay and to be honest they couldn't do enough to make us happy throughout our stay. Sometimes the bar staff couldn't understand people's different accents but i found if this was the case and you repeated yourself politely, then there was no issue( if someone shouted at me, i would probably be as rude back to them)

The All inclusive is great value as we got international branded drinks included (e.g Ballantyne's, Bacardi , Havana etc). Also the staff were very good in my opinion by letting you know if something was not included (e.g some cocktails) so no nasty suprises at check out. Also the spa is included in your all inclusive basis but we didnt use it due to the kids so cant really comment on this.

The rooms were very spacious and well equipped, two 3/4 beds together with a separate living room area in our family room. Big bathroom with double sinks, a walk in shower with massage jets, toilet & bidet and another bath with a shower...

The animation team worked very hard and were fantastic - thanks very much for all your efforts...the kids have plenty to do including a heated swimming pool which makes swimming in the late afternoon/early evening possible.

In terms of beaches, as previously stated, the beach directly in front of the hotel is pebbled but there is a good beach at papagayo which you can walk to along the paths on top of the cliffs. Having said that the promenade in front of the hotel over to playa blanca was great for walking of the excesses of breakfast and lunch...

We hired a car from a local company called cabrera medina via the internet from teh uk and would highly recommend them especially to those with kids as they dont charge for child/booster seats and are fully insured. they also dont have the usual con of pre filled fuel tanks which cost you an additional £40 or so, you just return it back witht eh same fuel as when you got it. Our car had only 8 km's on the clock so another bonus..( i am no way linked to this company btw- just very happy with the company)

Lanzarote was really nice, we would highly recommend visiting Timanfaya volcano and its well worth the money at 8Euro's per adult and kids are free...

Negatives:
These were not really that important to us but may be to you...
The hotel is about 3km's form Playa blanca so we were glad we had hired a car( i believe its about 4 euro's each way in a taxi)
Not sure if you are a young couple if this hotel / island is lively enough for you, in our opinion it is more of a chilling out place..

Overall we would say the hotel is fantastic and is ideal for families with young children but becuase you can use the facilites of both this hotel and the papagayo( which is the adjoining hotel on the same complex) there is plenty of space to escape the rugrats if you so wish...
Hope this helps..the S.... Family

5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 29, 2009

I booked the Dream Gran Castillo as a last minute deal, and what a great choice it was.

Although not a five star hotel by normal standards (more like a very good 4 Star), but the service, friendliness of staff, quality of food and general cleanliness made me rate it as 5 out of 5.

On arriving at the hotel, i was greeted by a very friendly lady on the check in desk, although my room wasn't quite ready for me, I had a quick drink by the pool to start the unwind. All the staff were very accommodating and helpful and only too pleased to assist.

I only ate in the buffet restaurant, but the quality of food was certainly the best I have experienced for an all inclusive buffet restaurant. There was a good selection of foods available and a chef to cook your choice of fish or meat to your liking.

The pool area was very clean, and the reserving of sun loungers was not allowed and actually enforced, meaning there was always space available.

The beach outside the hotel was too rocky to be of any use, but the Papagayo was very good and quite a pleasant walk to get to it too. The hotel is situated quite a walk out of town, but the pathway along the sea front made the walk more than pleasurable.

The gymnasium was quite disappointing, the quality of the equipment was quite poor and there was no water machine available.

I would definitely go back to the Dream Gran Castillo again, the stay was a complete pleasure.

One week @ £320 (or thereabouts) each, all in. Excellent value, and very reasonable choice of food at every meal, so no complaints there. Huge room, with own sitting room adjoining, and balcony, and very luxurious bathroom, with shower, and bath, and two handbasins, and also bidet. Generous change of towels. Extremely clean. One heated pool which was well used, many other pools, all very cold in November, but that's hardly surprising either.... Adjoining Gran Castillo luxurious, but facilities can only be looked at by Papagayo guests, or pay to use. Not available as part of the deal (except pools of course). Papagayo marvellous for families with smalls. Bar available after evening meal small, and dedicated mostly to kid's entertainment. Seemed to run short of Cava on fourth day of our visit - became very difficult to have with dinner. Some waiter/resses lovely, some really quite rude. Pressure on early diners to move off tables. Tiny complaints, really almost 10/10 EXCEPT today as we departed, and despite receptionist's assurance that we could get coffee and toast at 7.45am (hardly crack of dawn), Reception completely locked down, no staff, and Restaurant staff studiously ignored us through windows. As we had no water with us, and the coach transfer (WHICH I DO NOT RECOMMEND, GET A TAXI) takes nearly one and a half hours, by the time we got to the airport I had a ,stinking migraine. We had to let ourselves out through an iron garden gate, push our door key card under the locked door of reception, and sit on a hot, dirty coach absolutely parched with thirst, and with rumbling tummies (because we don't travel well on empty bellies). A pity. Provided you don't want late night carousing and like a quietish, but clean and tidy all in deal, would still recommend. but use taxi transfers, and get organised the night before it you are an early departure.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 22, 2009

For my birthday i was lucky enough to be treated to a 5 day stay at the Dream Grande Castillo (14th Nov-19th Nov). From the minute we arrived we were made to feel extreamly welcome although we were a little schocked at the size of the resort when first confronted with the map the resort is easier then i looks to navigate around. The size also means there is something for everyone! I lost count of the number of swiming pools; some heated, some not, some quite, some aimed at children..whatever you wanted it was there.
I would highly recomend the spa which is included if your all inclusive. They have the latest and greatest in hydropools, saunas, plunge pools and lots of other excitting things i didnt know existed!
The weather at this time of year was beautiful and was 25-28 C most of the time, there was a lovley breeze of the sea so if was perfect for sunbatheing.
I know alot of the previous reviews comment on the amount of children at the resort. To be honest when you go anywhere hot in summer you will get that (which seems obvious to most) but was fine in Novemeber there was a couple of young families but not over run at all!.
The staff were really great, I was sent a bottle of Cava on ice for my birthday without saying a word, the bar staff are very polite (speak ALOT batter german than english). The cleaners were excellent our room was always spotless as was the resort i don't think we saw litter at any time throughout the whole trip.
The location is ok if you dont mind a walk. If your a keen walker then its perfect! I usually HATE to walk anywhere but with gorgeous views a the nice weather its nice.
The food was not particually the best I've ever had but i could take it or leave it and some days we ate out. It was fresh and great if you eat fish but if you dont food was a little hard to chose. The a la carte restraunt was very nice in my view, unfortunatly my partner didnt love it as much but still said it was nice.
I would definatly recommend it and hope to go again next year!!!
