Just returned from spending Christmas in the Gran Castillo and we had a fantastic time. We travelled with our two children( 2&4) and they loved their time there(and therefore so did we!).Booked a week before after finding a cheap flight and were a little apprehensive after reading the mixed reviews..A lot of people commented on the food being a concern, we didnt see this at all. It is worth noting that it is "proper" food and not benidorm style chips with every meal so if this is what you perfer, this may not be the right place for you.
Other concerns were rude staff, and we didn't encounter this once during our stay and to be honest they couldn't do enough to make us happy throughout our stay. Sometimes the bar staff couldn't understand people's different accents but i found if this was the case and you repeated yourself politely, then there was no issue( if someone shouted at me, i would probably be as rude back to them)
The All inclusive is great value as we got international branded drinks included (e.g Ballantyne's, Bacardi , Havana etc). Also the staff were very good in my opinion by letting you know if something was not included (e.g some cocktails) so no nasty suprises at check out. Also the spa is included in your all inclusive basis but we didnt use it due to the kids so cant really comment on this.
The rooms were very spacious and well equipped, two 3/4 beds together with a separate living room area in our family room. Big bathroom with double sinks, a walk in shower with massage jets, toilet & bidet and another bath with a shower...
The animation team worked very hard and were fantastic - thanks very much for all your efforts...the kids have plenty to do including a heated swimming pool which makes swimming in the late afternoon/early evening possible.
In terms of beaches, as previously stated, the beach directly in front of the hotel is pebbled but there is a good beach at papagayo which you can walk to along the paths on top of the cliffs. Having said that the promenade in front of the hotel over to playa blanca was great for walking of the excesses of breakfast and lunch...
We hired a car from a local company called cabrera medina via the internet from teh uk and would highly recommend them especially to those with kids as they dont charge for child/booster seats and are fully insured. they also dont have the usual con of pre filled fuel tanks which cost you an additional £40 or so, you just return it back witht eh same fuel as when you got it. Our car had only 8 km's on the clock so another bonus..( i am no way linked to this company btw- just very happy with the company)
Lanzarote was really nice, we would highly recommend visiting Timanfaya volcano and its well worth the money at 8Euro's per adult and kids are free...
These were not really that important to us but may be to you...
The hotel is about 3km's form Playa blanca so we were glad we had hired a car( i believe its about 4 euro's each way in a taxi)
Not sure if you are a young couple if this hotel / island is lively enough for you, in our opinion it is more of a chilling out place..
Overall we would say the hotel is fantastic and is ideal for families with young children but becuase you can use the facilites of both this hotel and the papagayo( which is the adjoining hotel on the same complex) there is plenty of space to escape the rugrats if you so wish...
Hope this helps..the S.... Family
