“Excellent value for money”

I will be brief as many recent reviews are comprehensive, if a little unbalanced. Those who are comparing this hotel with the two 5 Star Luxury hotels in Playa Blanca should remember that they will pay a lot more to stay at them. Compare this with hotels of similar price, and in our view it compares very favourably.
Room: we booked a superior double/twin room and requested a quiet one. Request was honoured, and we received a family room (ie one with a seating area with sliding doors to separate the bedroom if you wanted). Room was superb - beautifully decorated, everything worked, amazing bathroom. Bed firm but comfortable. Free safe (many hotels charge a lot for this). An inner door separates bedroom from corridor thus reducing noise.
Grounds and public areas: lovely layout based on Moorish architecture, clean. Only problem ( a serious one at peak times) is lack of sunbeds caused by towels left, sometimes all day, and nobody on the bed. Not unique to this hotel but they do need to stop this selfish behaviour.
Food and drink: Good food, sometimes a queue for show cooking but not as serious as stated by other reviewers. The all- inclusive deal seemed generous, including spirits and liqueurs, not just local drinks as stated by hotel. (Some hotels have very restricted all-inclusive).
Entertainment: not important to us, but it did look poor from an occasional look.
Other tips:
Hotel is a long walk from centre of Playa Blanca (which we liked as it is select and quiet area) but a local bus costs 1.2 euros each way and runs at 15 and 45 minutes past the hour from near hotel. Alternatively, it is a lovely seaside walk first to Rubicon Marina (15-20 minutes) then on to Playa itself (say another 20 minutes).
Free wi-fi in reception area (again, many hotels charge, reception will give you access code).

My husband and i stayed in this hotel over christmas 2011. After reading tripadvisor reviews prior to going, we went with an open mind. The food was fantastic, plentiful and a wide variety. The drinks were proper makes, the wine nice. The waiters and waitresses were very hard working and pleasant. The pool appeared very clean (though we didnt go in , but people we spoke to said that they were warm and clean). The room was fabulous, roomy and cleaned every day. We did not experience any queing in any of the bars or restaurant.

On arrival we were given a lovely room with a small balcony but looking at a brick wall and were told that we would only get sunlight in the evening (it was dark by 6pm so we would not have got any sunlight to sunbathe on the balcony) As we dont do the pool thing and wanted privacy we asked to be moved to a room with a sea view where we would get sunshine on the balcony, they asked us to stay in this room for one night, then ask to be moved. We decided that as we were only there for a week we did not want to spend time unpacking twice so paid an extra £210 to upgrade to a sea view room, which was worth it as we spent most afternoons on our balcony.

We were pleased to find that a chinese and an italian restaurant were part of the hotel and within the fully inclusive package.

As i said the food is plentiful, in fact we only eat lunch on one day as we were still full from breakfast.

The downfalls were the evening entertainment which was dreadful, however we have a good sense of humour and found it to very entertaining in a comical way. Also if you want a bottle of water for your room it cost 2 euros a bottle (which should have been included as we were fully inclusive) No tea /coffee making facilities in the room, and if you wanted coffee in the room you had to pay for room service.

In the marina (about 15 minute walk from the hotel) there is a lovely bar / restaurant called the blue note. One afternoon we sat there for a few hours eating tapas and drinking red wine whilst listening to a fabulous blues/jazz singer (British) this only cost around £35 for the two of us.

There was not much of a christmas atmosphere on christmas day, but as the spanish celebrate later than the British i was not surprised or dissapointed,

Overall a very good experience and would definately return.

Room Tip: The only rooms that seemed to get the sun for long periods are the sea view rooms

Firstly, I'm not someone that moans there is no English food in a Spanish hotel, or that a member of staff doesn't smile 24/7 etc etc... We travel a few times a year and have never reviewed a holiday before, so will just tell you how it is. Arrival at the hotel is good, champagne while you are waiting to check in, and I mean wait...30 mins. First room was overlooking rubbish skips, the second didn't have a shower, the third was spot on... Spacious, walk in wardrobe, superb bathroom and extra large balcony but no info pack what so ever in the room (hotel map, tv channell guide, etc etc). After finally getting our room we went for lunch but had missed it, we had been travelling since 7 am so were very hungry! We then tried to get a snack from the bar... Poor, really poor!! After waiting 20 mins for the trays to be replenished as they were empty the choice was burger, hotdog and chips which was the same for the duration, either empty or filled with hotdogs, burgers and chips. When you arrive for dinner you are allocated a table which is yours for your stay, which I think works well, but I'm afraid that's where the organisation stops. You either line up at the only grill, for your fish or meat then find that the potatoes or sides have run out so you have to get someone to replenish what ever you are wanting, by which time your fish/meat is cold. Breakfast is exactly the same but worse as there is 1 person cooking eggs..only to order or omelettes to order which means if the person in front of you has opted for an omelette you have a wait for your egg, which doesn't sound so bad if you were at home with your family but this bloke cooking has an average of 1000 or more guests to cook for.... I waited 15 mins for a fried egg only to find afterwards there was no bacon so waited another 15 mins by which time the eggs were cold and I'm afraid that was the way it was all holiday. I must point out that all waiters and the dude cooking the food was very friendly, helpfull and what you would expect from hotel staff. To sum the restaurant up.. Food... Ok, Service... Excellent, organisation... Shocking, and for the record, coffee... disgusting. The only place to grab a drink in the day time up until 5pm is the pool bar, 1 maybe 2 serving, again not enough for the size of the hotel. This was a problem all over the hotel irrelevant if you went to the Italian restaurant, or had a drink in one of the 3 bars in the evening which We never see more than 2 staff serving throughout our whole stay (don't think this would of been the case if you were paying for you drinks) as for the evening entertainment as nice as the animation staff are, the shows they put on are dreadful, so much so that one evening the only people clapping and laughing were two 5 year old lads in front of us. Infact there is more people sitting outside on the terrace in the evening then sitting in side putting there self through the show...there is only so many times you can see the same man swinging rope around or doing Handstands, or men dressed up as woman miming really badly to film clips. The hotel is located more or less on its own so you don't have much else to choose from of an evening. Summing up The hotel in my opinion is that some of the grounds, rooms and service is 5 star, but the rest is just about a 4. We had a few problems throughout our stay which could happen if you were staying at the best hotel in the world and to give the hotel manager (david) his credit, he sorted everything, was apologetic, and we felt he really wanted us to leave his hotel happy. In my option this hotel is extremely understaffed and in areas very mismanaged and dis-organised,but with all us Brits that work hard for our holiday, your holiday is what you make it and we had a good time, would we return, no! Unless it was for new years eve, which I must mention was superb, food, champange and amotsphere was all spot on. Would we recommend, properly not as everyone's standards are different.. You only have to look on here.

I've just returned from a 4 night trip with my mum and sister to celebrate her 40th birthday. Upon arriving at the hotel I thought it was nice and was pleasantly surprised, we were offerred a drink on arrival while we waited for mum to check us in. The room we were shown was huge, I think it was a family room with 2 double rooms and 2 lounges and we were initially delighted, especially as we had a sea view. What we didn't realise was that the room was completely over looking the bins and skips, full of debri which wasn't to our liking. My mum arranged for us to move to a new room on the 3rd day of our trip and that room was much better. Apart from the view of the bins, no tissues, no water, no tea / coffee making facilities, no hotel info, I really couldn't complain about the room!

The food at the hotel was the main thing for us that let it down, we really didn't have a great meal in any of the venues and in one case one of our party couldn't eat a thing even after re-ordering. You wouldn't starve, but certainly not 5 star standard. We actually ate out 2 of the 4 nights at Romantica in Playa Blanca, which was the highlight of the holiday.

You do have to queue for drinks in the evening, which we found unbelievable in a 5 star hotel, although the quality was fine.

Sun beds are a major issue the hotel needs to tackle with many of the guests placing towels early in the morning to book a bed, then not using them until the afternoon and sometimes not at all. This is not allowed in the resort but management clearly doing nothing to inforce the rules.

The staff at the hotel are very friendly and I would have no complaint, they always had a smile for you and greeted everyone they met.

All in all, if you want a fairly reasonable family holiday, try the Gran Castillo. If however it's a 5 star experience you want then stay at the Princess Yaiza - truely beautiful!

DO NOT GO TO THIS HOTEL!!
THE MANAGEMENT OPENLY DO NOT CARE AND ARE ONLY SEEKING OPPORTUNITIES TO EXPLOIT YOU!!!

My wife and I have experienced many many hotels of all standards around the world, and were very much looking forward to our first New Year holiday in the sun with our young family. How wrong we were...........

BAD POINTS:
1. Bad rooms. The management will look to put you in inappropriate hotel rooms if you have not stayed before (e.g. overlooking the bins); especially if you are British as they hope you will not complain and put up with it. This happened to many many people we spoke to and there was always a long list of people complaining.
2. Cold. Many rooms are FREEZING and our children could not sleep. We have to pay and extortion amount to get a room on the sunny side of the hotel. Management just seemed to laugh and said ‘you British should be used to the cold’.
3. Black outs. The lights in our room were faulty – when we asked for them to be fixed, after waiting 5 hours, the maintenance man shorted the fuse (at 7pm) and we were left in pitch black, with 2 young children in the shower, for over 2 hours. Reception did not offer to help until I demanded assistance. The general manager did not seem to care how upset our family were, even though we had a special needs child (which they were aware of). We had to get our children dried and changed by the light from our portable phones..
4. Dirty sheets. Do not expect any new sheets after 8pm. Even though this is supposed to be 5 star, we put our children to bed to find dirty sheets were on the bed. Reception refused to provided replacements even though our children were desperate to go to bed. After 2 hours and a long ‘discussion’ at reception spare sheets were ‘found’ (it was 23.30 after a looooong night). Very very upset again and no apology given. Photos taken.
5. Dirty baths/Jacuzzi. We ran the Jacuzzi with our children in the bath, to only have ‘sewage’ come out of the jets. Children v upset. It was cleaned at our request on 2 occasions and still blew out sewage even on our final day. Photos taken.
6. Unclean rooms. On several occasions, all the maid did was change towels and turn down beds – and nothing else. We left items out to test this and were right.
7. Poor management. We spoke to the senior management about the above and were virtually told that we were only trying to take advantage of the situation, with no understanding of the impact on our holiday. The literally do not care, and on several occasions cut our phone conversation very rudely, even though we aimed to be polite at all times.
8. Poor poor night time entertainment. We felt that WE were the entertainment as no effort was made to provide any entertainment during our stay. The internal animation team were mainly used who tried but were very amateur. The ‘band’ provided on new year were the worst I have seen and literally mumbled for an hour before being kicked off just after midnight.
9. EVERY THING ON THE CHEAP. It seems that all efforts have been made to cut corners with everything automated – they must have had some consultants in to recommend changes as it took ‘cost savings’ to a new level... From the water dispenser (no fresh water), cocktail machine (that the staff told me not to use as was so bad, coffee maker (awful), juice machine (the worst I have experienced), anything that you would take for granted in a 2 star is absent here. I even bought coca cola from the local shop and the soft drinks provided in the bar were so bad.
10. COLD POOLS. My children never swam once in the holiday – something we always do and really put us off. Even the supposed heated pools are FREEZING and we never saw anyone brave enough to swim. The pool with the water slides in the brochure was literally the coldest I have felt and you had to break off the ice before using..
11. Slow restaurant service. At the Chinese one night we had to wait over 2.5 hours for our meal even though we were first in. Our children fell asleep and we had to leave early .
Good points:
Not many…
If you pay an extra £300 per week you may get a room with a glimpse of the sea (we were not told of this extra charge until we arrived).
Quiet – as it is miles from anywhere.
Everything else is mediocre at best…. Food/drinks etc…

We feel mis sold as this is NOT even a 4 star. All efforts were taken to get money out of you, even though it is meant to be AI. They will refuse to provide a refund no matter the circumstances..
Therefore, you are recommended to try one of the other much better hotels in the area, such as the Los Jameos Playa and princesa yaiza… At least there the management care about good service.
We will not be returning……

Having just returned from a pleasant holiday at the Gran Castillo I have to agree with other reviews that state that the hotel is not 5 star, which is a shame because it so easily could be ! The hotel and grounds are kept very clean and well maintained , the rooms are a very generous size with excellent bath rooms (though the shower temperature could be inconsistant ! ) and the staff are lovely.
The negative points are luke warm food, the quality and choice are fine but unless you have something from the grill (where the queues could be awful) the rest was never hot ! There is no bar service in the evenings and that meant queuing for a drink, not what you expect from this class of hotel ! The hotel also seemed under staffed, especially in the bars and in the dining room. It would also be helpful to have an infomation pack on the hotel in the rooms, we didn 't even have the extension number for reception ! and a bottle of water in your room when you arrive would have been appreciated.

My wife and 2 young children stayed for 5 nights between Jan 1st - Jan 6th, I had booked the hotel directly with no travel agent involved and found them very proffesional and helpful. They even sorted the transfer from airport to hotel (30 miles for 42 euros) and everything ran very smoothly. We arrived late on NYD (8.30pm) staff were very good on reception desk and sorted evening meal out promptly.
The food in the hotel is poor. Breakfast is the worst I've ever experienced, sausages are "hot dog" style, bacon is more fat than meat and the rest is a mixture of cheese and herrings in sauces.
Lunchtime we decided to snack in the various bars, food was average, and if you could avoid the pigeons, it was less than adequate.
Dinner was poor again, very bland tasetless food with not many sauces to go with the freshly cooked meats. We decided to go to the Italian for 2 nights, this was better, although not brilliant.

Enough about the grub, the hotel itself is very nice situated in a quiet part of Playa Blanca and an ideal place for a peaceful holiday. The room was clean and although the walk to the restraunt etc was far, we found everything spotless and well maintained.

The area outside the sports bar was fansastic for late evening sunshine, but the bar itself didn't open until 6pm. Odd.

All in all, a decent hotel but never a 5* due to the poor standard of food.
