We didn’t know that it existed, until, first one, and then a second friend recommended it. Where is it, I asked, right at the end of the San Pedro paseo maritime he replied, just before you get to the river where the paseo does a left turn.
Well I knew of two small restaurant around about where my friend were describing, neither of which were called RAFA.
Ah, well Its down a passageway he said, just before the first of the two restaurants.
Thus began our discovery, of what turned out to be a hidden gem, not because of any of the normal attributes that would attract you to try eating there, but if
you look at the menu and see, for example, a Grilled Sole for 10€, your expectation would be, either that the size of the fish would be like a Dab, or that it would be a frozen fillet, or worst still that it wasn’t even a Sole!
In the event, none of these were the case, for it was something like a 250 to 300 gram whole Sole, cooked to near perfection, on the bone, well seasoned,
and it was delicious. I say ‘near perfection’ because originally I asked for a
meuniere, which arrived as grilled with some butter sauce on the plate, but I forgive the chef for this. Looking at all the dishes that were arriving a tables around us, the portions were generous in size, and visually attractive. Coming back to the menu, it covers a wide range of fish, meat, salad and snacky dishes, including some
Rustic, is probably the best description of the dining room. Jovial and efficient, would be good words to use about the staff, and wholesome, tasteful, and moorish, for the food. Don’t expect a fine dining experience, but do expect to be hooked, for the bottom line, as far as we were concerned was, ‘We will return’ But, as my friend implored me, ‘try to keep it a secret’, otherwise we will never get in!!
They have 60 covers outside and a 60 inside, and when we were there 50 odd were taken, so, although we didn’t book, it looks like a call on 95278 1632 would make sure that you don’t go hungry. My description above as how to find RAFA is fine if you are walking, but by car it is little bit trickier – see map.
They open for lunch and dinner Tuesday to Sunday.
