“When is a hotel not a hotel? When it cannot provide the basic facilities expected by guests.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed April 4, 2012

My husband and I spent last night in this hotel and were appalled. When we arrived on the Tuesday before Easter, it was like a deserted hotel. A very glum receptionist informed us that we would have to go to the hotel next door if we wanted dinner and also for breakfast which we had paid for on booking. We then discovered that none of the normal hotel facilities were available - nothing was open! In fact apart from the receptionist we only saw one cleaner in the hotel, no other staff and only 2 other guests in the building. We ate in a lovely beach seafood restaurant nearby but could not even get a drink of water in this hotel as there was no bar open. There was no power to the mini fridge in our room and there was no shampoo or shower gel in the wall dispenser in the bathroom. There were no tea or coffee making facilities in the room. On checking out we complained to the receptionist and said we felt we had been misled when we made our reservation and we would not have booked if we had realised the hotel was not properly operational. The cost of our stay was exorbitant based on a complete lack of facilities. She simply invited us to write a letter of complaint! We are terribly disappointed and would definitely not recommend this hotel to anyone nor will we ever return.

We stayed here for two nights in May when we were travelling along the andalucian coast. The rooms were gorgeous, ours had a lovely view of the pool. The breakfast had a really good selection, they made fresh omelettes and pancakes. There was also cava for breakfast:-)

The pools were fab, particularly the main pool. It had a nice jacuzzi too! The location was really good, you could get down on to the beach from the back of the hotel. There were two ponie's in the grounds too which were really cute and tame.

The hotel restaurant looked really nice but we ate out in Conil, i think it was about a 10-15 mins walk. Conil town is really pretty, theres some really nice bars, restaurants and little shops

Room Tip: Try and get a pool view/sea view, even if you don't pay extra request it and you might be lucky...

The whole complex actually consists of two hotels, each following a slightly different taste. The Fuerte Costa Luz is the older one, I would choose the new one next door, as its just a little more tastefully appointed. The rooms are well appointed, the grounds very nice and all areas clean. It is really a very nice complex to take a relaxing weekend holiday. Service is exceptionally friendly and kind. Hotel is mainly geared up for german tourists

I can recommend the hotel, but it is a tourist hotel, with all its drawbacks: One feels a little isolated from the real spain, as everything is a little too far to reach. Although it is very nicely decorated, it still lacks some refinements and detailing, that one would expect from a 4 star hotel.

Rooms: We had one of the suites, although very spacious and comfortable ist lacked detailing: Several lamps didn´t work, reception on both TV´s was bad, Radio DVD wasn´t working, Towel rack in bathroom was "tilting" on one screw, instead of two, we could not find any writing or notepad but several pens (?), the mini bar was a joke, because in order to get it refilled you have to place an order the day before (what kind of policy is that?).

Grounds:
Nice, but not as spacious as one might expect, it is much smaller than it looks on the pictures. Can get crowded.

Restaurant:
Breakfast Buffet is included and the selection is very good, but the timing is horrible. As breakfast is served only for a short time, there is quiet "a run" for it. Why they insist on serving you the coffee, rather than also doing this self-serve, is puzzling. As it is already crowded, you sometimes get your coffee "after" you have finished with the breakfast already. If you were lucky to find a place to sit, that has been cleaned up. Not a lack of staff, rather a lack of time ...

Service:
Tried to get just a coffee at 11am, right after breakfast = impossible. Just got the reply that breakfast was over. I was prepared to pay for the coffee, but no service availabel. Sorry, but thats not what one would expect

Parking:
Extra charge and too expensive-park your car on the streets, if you find space

Town of Conil:
Walking distance to downtown a little too far, if you want to head there for dinner. But if you look for something more original, it is worth it. May not look like much from the beach, but head downtown at night, it is very cozy and original.

Beach access:
A little further away, than one might expect from the pictures. Carefull, because the gate was locked sometimes and when we came back, the card reader refused to work. Beach itself a dream to walk.

Summary:
Nice hotel, but I expected a little more. They try very hard to please, but it just is not what one would expect from 4 star comfort. Internationally I would rank it as 3 stars.

It's a very professional operation with good food and clean modern rooms and lots of resort features. Better if you speak German as it it seems aimed at that market. We were walk in (no reservation) so probably not high on the priority list in contrast to pre booked or groups. Good luck if you park your car there because finding the way to the garage is an adventure, and confusing. I think because of the language issue some issues were a little more difficult than normal. However, reception staff were helpful but reception does get busy because the complex is so big.

Not the first time we are staying at Fuerte hotels. This one was amazing!

Right at the reception you are offered a drink, anything from water, juice to champagne.

We booked a standard room but were upgraded to an ocean side view room. We dropped our luggage and went of exploring. It was evening and we were pretty hungry. Dinner buffet were being set up and I walked inside to look around. My husband is not a fan of buffets. On cruises he refuses to eat anywhere but in the restaurants. But I was tired and hungry and this buffet looked really interesting.
Fresh grilled fish, several choices of grilled meats, as well as salads, 4 different kinds of shrimp and langoustines. Not to mention all the hot dishes and desserts. I was impressed and talked him in to having dinner at the hotel. House vine was superb! We ended up eating at the hotel every night.
Our room was not satisfactory because it had musty smell, we could not open balcony door cause we were on the ground floor and anything or anybody could walk or crawl in and air condition was not working properly. In the morning I asked at the reception if we can have another room and explained the reasons. No bs and no problems. We were offered a room right away, if we were to pack and be out of ours in half an hour. But we had an excursion booked and had limited time, definitely not enough time to pack and move. I said we'll be back by dinner time and that I don't really care about the view as long as I can have my balcony door open to get fresh air at night. When we returned we were moved in to an even better room with better view on the 3rd floor. It was perfect. Next morning on Sunday we went down for breakfast and once again breakfast buffet offered everything from fruits to champagne. Hot station was offering omelets, various eggs done to your liking, pancakes and crapes. Meat and cheese selection was incredible. Very friendly staff and everybody spoke English and German. Highly recommend this hotel. Will definitely look forward to staying there again next year.
Also highly recommend this restaurant right on the beach, La Fontanilla. Fresh local fish and seafood, impeccably prepared and super-fast.

Room Tip: ask for a room on a higher floor with side of ocean view.

The hotel is nicely build, like a fort with wooden gates, a tower, etc.
At check-inn we became a drink (champagne, juice, water). All personell is very friendly, at the reception, in the restaurant, in the bar.
Nice room, we could not get seaview, but our room overlooking the tennis courts, was fine en quietly. A bit noisy, you could hear the sounds of toilet flushing in the room next to you, but not very disturbing.
You decied how many times you would like to have your towels and bedlinnen changed. The hotel is very consious about the enviroment.
Bathroom is clean, not very modern. There is a shower curtain (in stead of a glass wall) wich is a bit old.
Breakfast en diner very various en tastfull. Lots of choice in fruit, meat, fish, salades, etc.
Swimming pool and garden well maintained. No reservations of sunbeds (while we visited the hotel). The water of the swimming pool was very cold.
Animation limited in these period, but it was fine by us; for example demonstration of making sangria or gazpacho, a guided walk trough Conil, sunset in the tower with champagne.
You can also use the facilities of the neighbour hotel Fuerte Costa de la Luz.
