“Last minute choice which made our week”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2013

Thanks to a last minute change of plans, we needed to find a hotel at short notice and ended up at The Gran Conil.

Unprepossessing from the outside, the hotel impresses in every way once you are through the door. The lobby is minimalist, beautiful and spacious, with white furniture surrounding low level fountains of moorish tiles. The rooms themselves are also very modern, large and very well presented. The configuration of the hotel is a U shape, which faces the sea, so most rooms have good sized balconies with sea views. Bathrooms are equally spacious and come complete with double basins, and showers over the bath.

What really makes this hotel is the level of service and attention the staff deliver to make you feel really welcome. On check-in we were offered a drink, whilst we were taken through the necessary paperwork. We were also given a briefing sheet detailing all the key info needed - wifi code, restaurant and spa opening times, how to pick up a swimming towel etc. Finally staff offered to show us to our room.

Everyone, from reception, to bar staff to housekeeping, treated us with the sort of care and attention normally only offered at the most exclusive establishments. A real treat.

We had a week half-board at this hotel in Late August - early September. the hotel is fairly new and nicely appointed. the reception staff are helpful and the restaurant staff particularly so - they do an excellent job. Nice to sit outside and eat our meals - which incidentally were to a very good standard. Always plenty of choice of good-quality food.

My only complaint was when we arrived. We had paid for a room with a "partial sea view" and mentioned this to the receptionist. he advised us that we would like our room...however, it was the first room on the first floor that looked straight onto the bar and restaurante - WHAT A DISASTER. i immediately complainted and was I felt treated rather rudely by the reception staff for voicing my disapproval - but seriously, this room was literally 5 meters from sitting in these 2 busy public areas. We were then moved onto the third (top) floor and half-way down the inner-length of one of the accommodation wings. Altogether much better AND we now had a sea view (which is what we had requested!!!).

Room Tip: I would return to this hotel but would be very specific about which rooms (there are about 6 bad one...

We arrived in Conil intending to stay in another hotel, but found it was only available for one night. We were told to try the Gran Conil and were realyy impressed. The reception was bright and beautifully furnished. They were doing a special offer and breakfast and dinner was included in the room rate. The room was very spacious and clean as was the bathroom. The pool area was excellent and the pool a very good size for serious swimmers. A pool bar served snacks and drinks. The hotel was within walking distance of the beach and Conil town. Breakfast was very well catered. All in all one of the best hotels I've stayed in.

From the moment we arrived the staff were friendly and did everything they could to make our stay enjoyable. Arriving before the normal check in time was not a problem and we were soon in our room which was very clean , modern and well decorated.
The grounds are not vast but are very well kept and have a gate leading to the beach. The pool area had numerous sun bed, a large pool and the usual bar facilities.
We were on 'half board' which proved to be excellent value. The breakfasts and evening buffet choices were very good and whilst there were the usual repeated items there were different dishes each day; some of which were cooked to order.
Slight annoyance was that the daily charge for the room safe was a bit high and you had to pay for the underground car park, but there was some free parking in the grounds or nearby.
I would definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: The side sea view rooms on the south side of the hotel get the evening sun.

We stayed at the hotel in the second week of October and were blessed with incredible weather. Sunny and hot.
As we had a car for the week, the location of the hotel was perfect for us - away from the main roads, right on a superb beach. We explored the area and were very impressed with this part of Andalucia. There was so much to do and see! We visited the following places:
Arcos - just over 1 hour drive from the hotel, Medina Sidonia - 40 minutes (we happened to visit during a local fiesta and the atmosphere in the main square was amazing), Cadiz - 45 minutes, Jerez just under an hour, Vejer - 20 minutes (it has a very pretty square with squirting Andalucian frogs!). All of these destinations were unique and well worth visiting, but if we had to choose just one, it would be Cadiz, an unforgettable place. We had a lovely lunch in St Agustin square, which is close to Cl Rosario where you can find the church with the Goyas. But bear in mind that they close for the siesta and re-open at 4.30pm. Arcos is also stunning (we arrived in the late afternoon expecting it to be colder than Conil and were delighted to find out it was 33 degrees and brilliantly sunny!). We did not get the chance to visit Barbate which is close to Vejer, but if you like tuna, it is the place to go. We bought some in Seville and it was delicious!

The hotel is just like the photos, immaculate, stylish and minimalist. The rooms and bathrooms are excellent. As it is a 4 star hotel they do not provide bathrobes, however you can hire one for 18 euros from the reception.

We complained about our side sea view room on arrival, as it was very close to the restaurant and bar, and we had asked for a quiet room at the time of our booking. As we arrived late, we had to wait till the next morning, but the security guard checked the noise level and shut the door to the bar which held a private function. The next morning Susana, the manageress, dealt with our complaint in a very professional and efficient manner and we were given a lovely room on the first floor, very close to the sea view rooms. We were very impressed with how quickly and smoothly we were moved to a much better room. I celebrated my birthday during the holiday and the hotel management left a complementary bottle of cava in our room which was a very nice surprise. The chambermaids left me a balloon and chocolates. A nice touch.

The breakfast was good and we had ours early to avoid the crowds. The singing egg chef was great and she did not bat an eyelid when I turned up with my own organic egg (bought in Carrefours in Cadiz).
The evening buffet was ranging from good to very good with a couple exceptional dishes. They provide a small range of gluten free products and there is a good choice of salads without dressing, so you can choose your own. Their vegetables are mushy and completely overcooked, but here were at least 3 kinds of fish for grilling (different each night) and some ready cooked fish dishes. I believe that even a vegan would find something different each night.

Only one small criticism - the mojitos at the hotel bar were horrendous. Possibly the worst we ever had, however, the bar prices were very reasonable.

This hotel caters for families with children. We tend to avoid places which do, but we are very happy to have chosen it, as we did not encounter any problems. We were either lucky, or the hotel attracts sensible parents!

We can highly recommend this hotel for a superb holiday, especially if you are willing to explore the area. We booked our holiday through Travel Republic, so we had a choice of flights. We chose the latest flights form Seville and had an amazing day in this incredible city. A perfect end to a perfect holiday.

Room Tip: If you want the sun on your balcony in the morning, ask for a side sea view room in the right wing...

After searching the Internet since Jan for a venue for an Irish family birthday bash in Spain we were so lucky to hit upon Hipotels Gran Conil. We just returned to Ireland on Sat Oct 6th and cannot wait to go back. A modern hotel in a fantastic location, fabulous views of pool and sea, great food, value for money and last but not least the extremely friendly and helpful staff. All excellent. From the moment we arrived until we left, we felt pampered and looked after by front desk staff, restaurant and bar staff with a very special mention for Matthew and Carmen who made our holiday so special and memorable. Cannot wait to make a return visit with more family and friends. We want to tell everyone about Hipotels Gran Conil but we also want to keep it as our secret retreat.

Room Tip: Room with a view is worth the extra cost.

This hotel is quite new (2011?) and very modern. We stayed for two nights and had a room with a sea view, which was a good size with a fine bathroom. We have stayed at the Calle de Fuente end of Conil before and the Fontanilla beach near this hotel is fantastic with good seafood restaurants. There is nothing wrong with this hotel but it does seem to lack sole. The majority of the guests seem to be from Germany and the service is excellent although there is some comedy as the waiters try to talk to all foreign guests in German. We booked with half board because it was very good value. The restaurant offers huge buffets for breakfast and dinner with some fresh food cooked to order.

Room Tip: Worth paying for a sea view room.
