“Home for Peace & Quiet and to catch up on lost Sleep!!!!!!!!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2009

Villa Rosa is the ideal location if you suffer from Insomnia. If you want nightly (24/7) entertainment you wont be disappointed! You have the choice of listening to the large range of barking/howling dogs, squealing maniac seagulls, loud diesel vehicles, car horns and LOUD LOCALS TALKING & PARTYING ALL NIGHT!! You have no choice as there is no air con in most of the rooms and you have to sleep with the balcony door open due to the heat.
There is also an appartment/timeshare Sales Operation in place at the pool area as management and sales representatives (who obviouly are earning a lot of commission) are showing potential new customers about all day every day.
There are sports facilities at the complex but beware of the debris lying in the tennis courts as you could end up with a nasty break. Make sure your trainers have good tread!!
Definitely would not recommend this hotel. Not even to my worst enemy as sleep deprivation is a hard punishment to endure.

just returned from a very enjoyable week at vila rosa, the complex is very well maintained and the staff are all extremely helpful. we were in block b and were about 20 steps from the second smaller pool which is not far from the main building and larger pool.

i can honestly say i never heard one dog bark all week, yes there were sea gulls but not loads and they didnt wake us in the mornings.

the maids did come every day and the air conditioning was very good, especially as we had a few very hot days.

the super market on site is very basic but unless you plan on doing a lot of your own cooking its fine.

there are many great places to eat in the town and can recommend irelands eye, croke park, the holywood and sitting bull and also the chinese restaurant.

As we had a late booking we did not have much choice as to where we would have liked to gone and stay in Portugal.First of all,the transfer was a nightmare,3 hours from Faro! We thought that we were never going to get there. When we did get to the Vila Rosa at about 10-30 at night, the miserable looking porter, wanted us to carry our suitcases up 2 flights of stairs. After 3 hours on the coach we really did feel like it! My mother-in -law was with my wife and I.She is 83,she could hardly carry her case.He eventually showed us the lift. We ended up in Lot 21.Yes you do her dogs barking, locals shouting, building works going on in the morning. But not every night. If you want peace and quite dont book in here!
We went off most days to different places,as the town in Praia Da Rocha is just like Blackpool, all shops and pubs. There are some nice places to eat.The Irish Eye we recommend, like the other reviewers, for there breakfast. If you like meat the resturant just outside the Vila Rosa is good value. The Sabour Gaucho.
Well recomend the jeep safari,up to the mountains.
We booked in town just pass the Casino,on the left ,an English woman called Kathy whos been there for 27 years.Much cheaper to book in town.We took taxis every where we went ,very cheap 4 euros to Alvor.A really nice little town, nice fish places to eat at.We also went to a place called Ferragudo, really worth going to,an old fishing village. The taxi cost us about 8 euro, but be sure the taxi driver gives you a card to ring them back for a lift home.As there arw no taxis in Ferragudo. Also go on the trips to the fish and gypsy markets in Loule. The sand sculptures are well worth going to see.Portimao is just down the road, have a taxi.Recommend the sardine restruant, right down by the bridges, massive place. Also go on the river cruise, very nice and peacefull. The Zoo Marina is ok for a day out,for young and old.

We have just arrived back from the Vila Rosa and before going on holiday we were concerned because the recent reviews have been mixed but speak as you find - thats the idea of these reviews. We arrived on the afternoon of the 9th August and were greeted by a very friendly receptionist. She arranged for a gentleman to show us to our studio he was very pleasant so far so good. He opened the door to a bright, really clean apartment overlooking the pool. We could not have asked for more. On the floor below us was the reception and below that was the outside bar and entertainment area. We were very lucky you could not have requested better. The only comments I have to make about the studio was that the cooking facilities were basic (2 rings and a fridge) and the air-conditioning could have been better. We had to leave the door open most of the time. The comments I want to make are regarding the staff.

We had four occasions to use reception - booking in, arranging a taxi to the nearby Continente when we first arrived and I needed a battery for my mobile phone.Arranging car hire which was excellent and requesting a extra pillow. On each occasion we were met with friendly staff who were very professional in their jobs. We used the bar/bisto area on many occassions and were served promptly, politely and the food was nice. One evening I left my wrap on the back of a chair and this was returned with the minimum of fuss the next day. The cleaning ladies did an excellent job they came about 3pm 6 days a week and changed towels and bedding twice a week although they said it would only be once. The position of our apartment allowed us to see the rest of the hotel team at work. The pool was cleaned and I mean really cleaned (men in frog suits going down to the bottom of the pool) every day. They commenced every morning spot on 7a.m. and were finished for 9 a.m. when the pool opened. The gardeners were out everyday. They cut the grass area around the pool every Thursday and you could see why this was the case. The biggest change over is on a Thursday so they have done this to limit the disruption of the holidaymakers. They were still finished by shortly after 9 a.m. The shop is tiny on site but did provide you with the basics.

We were a little apprehensive about the position of our apartment of noise from the bar area. We should not have been. The only noise was before 10.30 then the entertainment moved inside. This was typical hotel entertainment and we din't see much of it so don't feel we could comment.

Now the barking dogs - yes we did hear them but they were not constant and unfortunately, I don't think the hotel can do much about this you could be staying in any other hotel in the surrounding area and still be getting the same trouble. As for the sea gulls living as we do in a costal town in England believe me it was no different and again you would still hear them in any of the other hotels.

In our experience and lets face it thats all we can write about. The Vila Rosa is well run, well maintained by excellent staff and they are the owners biggest asset. We were asked to complete a in-house survey which we did. In it they asked us if we could name a member of staff who went the extra mile. We couldn't to do that would seem as if we were penalising another member and they were an excellent team.

ANY REVIEWS THAT MENTION BARKING DOGS ARE NOT A JOKE AND YOU MUST TAKE THEM SERIOUSLY!!!
We booked ten months before travelling, paid quite a lot of money and requested quiet accommodation. The apartment was nice and tidy, well-equipped for what we wanted and high up in Lote (Block) 22. We arrived just after lunch on Saturday and the two guard-dogs in the villa opposite started to bark on and off from 5/6 pm. They re-commenced early on Sunday morning and we told the Rep that he would have to move us as it was unbearable. They were peak weeks and he had nowhere to put us, so we agreed to try to tolerate it until the following Thursday, when we decided that it would be too upsetting to move all of our belongings out and re-settle somewhere else, especially as we had had reports of barking dogs on most sides of the complex. Our course of action was to keep out of the apartment as much as possible. So, when the massed seagulls woke us at 3/4 am every morning, we were wide awake. At 7 am the nearby building-site swung into action and we found that Portuguese building techniques consist of hitting large lumps of clangy metal with hammers. Siestas were out of the question because of the dogs, so most days were spent around the (albeit very nice) pool. The police were requested on a couple of occasions late at night although the receptionist was reluctant as "they have done nothing in the past!" If you are in the apartment between 10 & 11 at night when the 'good' owners walk their pets, then the chorus of howls, yelps and barks is deafening as the caged beasts frantically try to get out to the ones walking freely in the street. On occasion, there is a plaintive cry in a British accent of "For God's sake, shut those dogs up!"
The locals have a weird sense (or lack) of community and neighbourliness. We're not talking about holiday flats here, we're talking million-pound villas with swimming pools, roof-top terraces, etc with dogs deafening the neighbours while they're eating on the patio or playing cards, etc. There are flats in the town with two alsatians living on the balconies. Major hotels on the main strip have big dogs barking constantly next door.
Anyway, the complex itself is very nice, good pool and pool-side facilities. On-site restaurant is Brazilian themed and the Potuguese loved it, but we found it not quite to our tastes. All the staff were lovely, friendly and helpful. The on-site mini-market is ok for basics like water, milk, bread rolls, etc. The Superali shop is ten minutes walk away in the town and there is a big shop just around the corner on the main drag for your wine, beer, etc.
The weather was perfect, the town and surrounds nice (Alvor is delightful), the choice of eating places is very good and varied, but we could not recommend the Vila Rosa to anyone except insomniacs and our enemies.

We stayed at the Vila Rosa from the 31st July for 2 weeks. After reading reviews on trip advisor we weren't quite sure what to expect. When we arrived at the vila rosa, the receptionist was lovely, really helpful and friendly. We were shown to our room which was massive. Really spacious and very clean. We stayed in block 4 which was opposite the black and the white dog. Our personal names for them "Pongo and Mutley"!! The only time they seemed to bark was on a morning between 8-9 am and early evening, but I wouldn't let this put you off. They really aren't half as bad as stated in other reviews. The maid service was excellent, they cleaned the rooms 6 times a week and bedding changed twice a week. If you leave your towels on the floor in the bathroom then they are changed daily, which we found fantastic. The pool was really clean and very child friendly. If you plan on staying at the pool for the day though, you do need to put your towels down early morning as it was really busy when we went. The evening entertainment was ok, not the best we've seen, but it kept our 2 children entertained late on an evening. The beach was beautiful, the only draw back with this was the popularity, it was really busy.
After trying out some of the Portugese Restaurants on the first week, which were a bit hit and miss we ended up sticking with an english restaurant by the name of "Dukes". Absolutely beautiful and reasonable priced meals for lunch and evening meal. Really friendly staff too. If you follow the road into the centre and over the bridge you need to turn right at the main street, Dukes is on the right hand side of the road in between some souvenir shops. "Definitely worth trying". This is the one place that even my kids miss about coming home from holidays.
All in all, we would definitely visit Praia da Rocha again and Vila Rosa.
