“Huge apts is the best part”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2010

We arrived late afternoon and were checked in at 'reception' very efficiently. There were no smiles, no chat, no extra informaton...even when I asked about the room having a safety deposit box the answer was simply 'yes'. It wasn't until I trailed the bags to the room that I discovered you had to pay for the safety deposit and the air con. That in itself I didn't mind, but why not tell guests this at check in?!

APTS
Were great. We had a ground floor apt with a large living/dining area, large seperate fully equipped kitchen, twin bedroom with ample wardrobe space and a large bathroom. The balcony was huge also, with 2 sun loungers and umbrella and table/chairs. It was the largest and best equipped apartment I've ever stayed in however......
The maid service wasn't great and I don't think we had towels or sheets changed once in the week, which is a shame as it really detracted from the high quality of the apts. Agree with the other reviewer about the pillows...I've never experienced anything like it. Like a pillowcase stuffed with hard cotton wool balls.

POOLSIDE
We sat her on a few occasions, good fun but very busy and you have to fight your way past the inflatables in the pool to have a swim. Did have to get up very early to reserve a sunbed and even early if you wanted an umbrella. No one comes round the entire day to clean up though, so it can get quite grubby at the end of the day if people don't clear away their own rubbish.

FOOD
Ate breakfast/lunch a couple of times and the food was lovely. Service wasn't though and I thought all the staff were miserable. Didn't bother us though as we didn't spend any time there in the evenings.

LOCATION
Great location 10 mins walk from the main centre and beach. We used the little dirt track every day and night with no problems. The shortcut is outside and to the left of the hotel.

RESORT
Great resort with something for everyone. The beach was gorgeous, 5 euro per person for a lounger and umbrella for the day. The beach bars were good too and we had a few good lunches down there. Jet Skiing was brilliant fun too.
We went to Alvor and also to the marina at the Dockside which I would highly recommend. Both great nights out.

TRIPS
Did one trip with the rep on the Catamaran which I thought was fab and good value for money. All the staff were wonderful and would do anything to help. It was great to get out and see the beautiful coastline.

OVERALL
If you need a base in the resort, then I'd recommend this apartment. If however you're looking for a relaxing time by the pool with a good bar/entertainment, then this is not the hotel for you.

Only two complaints with this lovely hotel. Firstly the pillows were awful felt like some had cut up foam and stuff bits of it into a pillow case. lastly its self catering apartments and we took mcdonald back and got told of like children. Other than that it was lovely and clean and everyone was really friendly.

On arrival we were charged 20 euros for air conditioning and 20 euros for a safe (safe was a reasonable price, the air conditioning stopped working after one week and didn't get fixed and we recieved no refund), given a key to our room that was meant to sleep 3, it had a twin room and a living room with a shabby dirty sofabed, when we pulled the under bed out it was stained and very very uncomfy to sit on...I did complain but was told there was nothing they could do!!!!

We made ourselves comfortable and walked down to the pool area, which is quite impressive and clean, the only thing is you couldn't get in the pool for people with lilos and playing with balls or other toys, it was mobbed!!

We had lunch in the cafe on site, it was lovely but later found out they charge whatever they like each time you go to the bar!!

We soon caught on to the 'German' way of putting you towels out first thing or you didnt get a bed lol lol lol....people partied way into the small hours with the onsite bar being opened till 2am!!

I was really looking forward to this trip but found it to be way over the price we should of paid,

The rep Claire was pleasant and the beach is spectacular but I wouldn't recommend this place unless they updated their furniture and made people adhere to the rules they post all about the resort!!!

We have just returned from the plaza real apartments with our children aged 10 and 5, our friends with their 2 young children joined us for our second week. I will get my only complaint out of the way first. We arrived at the apartments at 12 noon and were told that our room was not ready as were several other families who arrived with us. After complaining that our children had been up since 2am and were very tired we were told that it states in the brochure that check in is after 4pm (which it does not). We then had to sit in the bar which is not air conditioned, change our children into their swimming costumes in the toilet and wait for 2 1/2 hours for our room. The First Choice rep who arrived was very rude and unhelpful and said that because we had requested a high floor room that was why our room wasnt ready!! We had booked one year in advance so this was totally unacceptable.

This thankfully was the only gripe we had over the full 2 weeks. The accommodation was very spacious and the pool area very relaxing and safe for the children. Our children used the Thomson kids club and thoroughly enjoyed it, you did not have to pre-book the day before either as we had done other years as it is quite a small complex. You do have to pay for the air conditioing which is 10 euros per week with 20 euros refundable deposit (well worth it as 37 degrees most days!!) The apartments are a good 15-20 minutes walk to the resort centre and the first few restaurants you come to are very nice, Ju and bulli and pupe are 2 of them. If you go further to portimao there is a beautiful marina and the dockside restaurant is excellent, this is a good 30 minute walk though, taxis back from the centre were around 4 euros. The resort is very busy along the main strip with every type of bar and restaurant you could want, you do not get pestered too much outside the restaurants either, if you say you have eaten they leave you alone.

Overall we had a fantastic time, Thomson rep Claire on site was really helpful, nothing too much trouble as were the kidzone reps. We would definitely go back to praia da rocha and also the plaza real.

I travelled as a single mother and business woman of 34 with my 16 year old daughter and her 16 year old friend, we travelled to Plaza Real fearing the worst dissapointment as we had just returned from a 5* spa & golfing hotel in Marbella and we were expecting this 3* establishment to be significantly below standards as it was booked only 2 weeks before departure costing a mere £2000 for a one week stay in a two bedroom apartment, for both me and my daughter! Amazing value for money, as we drove into the complex we were feeling rather disheartened by the hotels exterior, our fears only grew worse as we entered the reception area, however after checking in via the highly friendly recption staff we went to our assigned room D217, upon opening the door an angled marble staircase leading up o two spacious double bedrooms, an oversized bathroom with two showers with his and her's sinks and two balconies appeared, downstairs was an equipped kitchen, a large entrance hall, a downstairs WC/cloakroom, a large broom cupboard under the stairs which we transformed into swimming pool inflatables storage, a large louge diner combi with a large balcony, air-con units were in almost every room and only 15 euros for the whole week! Now that is VALUE for money!

The beach was gorgeous! And the nearby Marina of Portimao was stunning, and a lovely place to eat.

Car hire was also very cheap!!

However despite my daughter and her friends presence I was away on business and for the day that I had to drive all the way into Lisbon for a meeting, I had to leave my daughter, and her friend around the hotel, they made great use of the local shopping complex which contained many home brands such as Mango, Zara and Lacoste, the hotel staff were more than willing to keep them in safe hands in the time they were around the hotel, as was the lovely Thomson holiday representitive Claire!!

The staff were fantastic, as were the surroundings, the weather and the beach, a real eye opener from the usual kind of business trip, I would definately do it again!!

We arrived at the Plaza Real Apart-hotel towards the end of July just as the school's broke up, so the apartments were beginning to get busy.
On the first day, we encountered a few problems with our apartment; One of the air conditioning units was broken, the sofa bed also broke when we sat on it, we had a leaky shower head and the balcony chairs were unbalanced and rickety. We reported these problems quickly and were shocked when a maintenance man turned up to repair everything 5 minutes later. We were very impressed and didn't experience any further problems. We were also impressed by the maid service, it was a relief especially when you get back from the beach and you realise you've brought half of the beach back with you.

The kitchen was well-equipped with everything you need to cook a proper meal, however it did lack in the number of glasses and plates. The oven isn't fan assisted and sometimes creates smoke which can set off the fire alarms. There is another problem with the hobs too. You must not turn the hobs any higher than a 4 otherwise it trips the electricity for the whole apartment. The bathroom is large and clean, but be careful when using the shower, because the bath and the floor are quite slippery. Other than that, it is very comfortable and spacious.

The swimming pool is okay, but if you want to do proper swimming or you dislike children I wouldn't recommend this. There are no lifeguards at the pool and children often break the rules which are clearly stated at the pool entrance. Before the pool is even opened, towels are on every available sun lounger so you need to get to the pool early.

The bar offers a good range of cocktails, milkshakes and other alcoholic drinks. We didn't have a chance to try the food on offer, but from what we saw it was pretty limited menu anyway. However, with Praia da Rocha beach only a 15 minute walk away there are plenty of other local restaurants and bars to try there.

There was evening entertainment 3 times a week. On Tuesdays and Fridays there is karaoke in the bar, which we tried many times and it is done really well with big screens etc. On Fridays they have a weekly parrot show, which is very funny but they do try to get lots of money out of you through pictures with the parrots. Then on Sundays there is a kids' disco.

The location of the hotel was very good. You are close enough to the beach if you wanted to walk there regularly, but you are also far enough to be away from the hustle and bustle of the beach promenade. The hotel's surroundings are very quiet and peaceful. The nearest supermarket is about 15 minutes walk away, which makes travelling back with lots of shopping very hard work in the heat. It is best to get a taxi from the bay outside to the hotel and it is only costs about 3 or 4 euros - so not too expensive.

Overall we had a very enjoyable holiday. If you are travelling with Thomson, Claire the hotel rep, is very friendly and is always willing to give advice and help. I wouldn't recommend this hotel for couples, I think it is more aimed at families.

The apartments are spacious, I travelled with my children 18,16 & 10 yrs, we had plenty of space. Apartments cleaned, beds made and change of towels most days. Not much evening entertainment but swimming pool closes at 8pm there is a pool table and a few arcade games. The electric went off when I told the receptionist she said 'that happens, just flick the trip switch back'. However the holiday rep Claire was very helpful and said it usually happens and advised the cooker be put on at a lower temp.(the only grumble)
Plenty of places to eat in the main resort which is about 15 min walk. we had a three course meal at a resturant for 7 euros! so didn't find eating out to expensive. The beach is wonderful, lots of steps though. Supplies Continente (We bought a parasol from here -1 euro it wasn't special but ideal for the days on the beach). - plenty of taxis in car park, save carrying shopping back up hill! Aquashow Excursion well worth going, half day boat trip was just right, if taking children.Overall had a lovely holiday.
