“Truffle Hunt!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2013

Villa Campestri is perched on top of the hill overlooking the Tuscan Valley. Everyone at the hotel went out of their way to make us feel comfortable. I highly recommend the truffle hunt with Giani (or Johnny?)and his dogs. We were so lucky to find 7 truffles with one as big as a baseball! The hotel cooked us a great pasta lunch the hunt. We never had this much truffle on one plate before.

Room Tip: Room 48, with private balcony with sunset views.

Villa Campestri is a nice hotel in an ancient villa that looks like a castle even. The thick walls allow for a chilled temperature in the building even in summer although there is no AC in the room (at least not the one we were). The castle overlooks the valley and is surrounded by lawns and fields – the swimming pool is big enough to allow for a cooling swim in the morning or during the day. All rooms are furnished differently and with ancient furnishings: beds, closets, desks, chairs – this creates a very nice atmosphere that you don’t find everywhere. Breakfast is served in the first floor in the mornings with fresh food, however sometimes it was a bit crowded down there and we had to wait for the waiter to supply additional bread, salumis, cheese etc. Despite from all the above said we are a bit disappointed with the restaurant where we then only ate once: there were only two waiters that night. As the dinner hours are only within 7pm and 9.30 pm and there were plenty of tables & guests to be served, all went a bit chaotic and comic: there was a break for 30 minutes between the appetizer and the main course, then we sat 25 minutes in front of our main course plates once they were finished. When the waiter delivered desert, there was no space to put the desert plates as there was the dinner plates still. We talked to the waiter the next day and shared out experience and observations. He agreed that was a special night but – to be honest – the price level of the restaurant and the expectations that they set with all of it are too high for guests to really accept that.

Thanks to Tripadvisor we are now used to reading many reviews, sometimes pleasant, sometimes unpleasant. By now we are all great critics because being a critic is easy. We do not risk anything by taking advantage of the great power that our words have on the web. But the sad reality is that, in a bigger picture, even the most average work of a small suburban motel has a lot more soul, energy and love compared to the words and the judgment that defines this. That specific evening when you were our Guests was a special night as we explained to you. A very serious last minute problem did not allow one of our waiter to come to work. Plus many guests that didn't confirm their reservations at the Restaurant changed their mind and asked at the very last second to eat at the Restaurant. I found it unfair that just 1 unfortunate evening was the reason to write a review with low rating.

We already spent 2 nights at the resort last year - as we really enjoyed our short stay then, we came back for a 6 nights-stay. And we're so happy we did!
We were warmely welcomed as "coming home" friends and given the suite we'd been asking for, with a wonderful view and a fabulous bathroom. The whole historic property itself is fantastic, so is the location up in the hills, with wonderful views on the surrounding countryside - don't skip the view on the valley when the mist is rising up, it's just gorgeous!
Having breakfast on the terrasse early morning is such a plesant moment and makes you ready to drive and discover the surroundings - immediate or not: Florence, the Chianti region, Lucca, San Gemignano...And coming back in the evening to find peace and beauty in the Villa is just great! .
Havind dinner in the restaurant is remarkably enjoyable too: the food and wine are delicious and the atmosphere is elegant. Really enjoyed too the limoncello Dario used to bring to us in the living room!
We are feeling we've found top of the Tuscan atmosphere... and probably will be back again!
Thanks to all the most welcoming staff, to Sandra, to Bianca, Tatiana, Viola...Dario (and the people working in the restaurant too).

We found Villa Campestri to be commodious and restful. The setting is picture perfect and the staff was so friendly and accommodating. We arrived one day early--we had only booked one night originally-so we got to enjoy two evenings there. Breakfast is delicious and the atmosphere is elegant and remarkably enjoyable. Internet does not work inside the rooms (walls too thick), but works fine in the main living room. The villa is difficult to find and you need a car here, if at all possible. We loved the setting so much that we have considered moving here!!

Room Tip: Downstairs.....dark and lovely......

We recently stayed at Villa Campestri for five nights. It is a very friendly place, where the owners and employees go out of their way for guests. We reserved a room without thinking about needing a ground floor room (no elevator). Not to worry, they graciously agreed to change our room. As many have observed, this property is historic, but bathrooms have been updated. The food is fabulous. We had dinner every night. Dario manages the restaurant. He speaks excellent English and can describe all the dishes for you. We especially enjoyed the risotto special one night with vegetables and saffron. The filet of beef is also spectacular. The wine is also excellent. All very reasonably priced. The propery is located on top of a large hill. Once you get to the road that goes to the property, you have a 2 mile, narrow, twisty turny, drive. Just be prepared. We enjoyed market day in nearby Borgo San Lorenzo. Florence is easy by train or car. We also drove to the Chianti region and to the medieval town of Lucca. It's about a half hour drive to the autostrada. We had a great time, even when the weather didn't cooperate.

Just arrived home after three fantastic days and I can only agree with all of the previous reviews. Fantastic location up in the hills with wonderful views of the surrounding countryside. The staff were most welcoming, the food and wine were of the highest quality and a special mention must go to the restaurant manager, Dario. Our room (64) was huge with a separate sitting area and views from two aspects. I will certainly return.

It is quite astonishing, how one place can assemble and excel in all elements characteristic to a Region. Starting with a set-up on wavy heels, through the charm of a Tuscan village, with remarkable design and architecture surrounded by a cypress garden. With olive oil made to a theme, in both the restaurant and the spa, I felt we found top of the Tuscan world and might not be found for days.
