“Beautiful surroundings and a wonderful staff”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 5, 2013

Villa Campestri is peacefully set in the hills about an hour outside of Florence. The property is lovely and very well maintained. The staff is extremely friendly and accommodating. There are wonderful walks all around. The olive oil is delicious.

We booked a superior room and were upgraded to a suite on arrival. Unfortunately, the suite was quite drab and may have given us an unfavorable first impression. The resort was booked and we were only able to swap rooms the following day. The suite was excessively dark with only a few dim lamps that didn't provide enough light to read with, the bedroom had only one sliver of window that faced the unspectacular driveway and not the peaceful landscape that the front of the resort offers. The room was heavy, draped in maroon and depressing. The bed, bedding, and amenities were tired and the bathroom was dirty. We were switched to a lovely room the following day with large windows that opened to a pleasant view. The bathroom was clean and the room was all around far more cheerful.

This resort is perfectly comfortable and nice, the grounds are extremely pleasant and the staff is very friendly. We enjoyed our stay after the first night and we would recommend this resort with some things to keep in mind. There is very little lighting throughout - it is dim and dark inside. While most of the old furniture is charming and fits the ambiance, some of the amenities that would make a guest comfortable are simply tired or outdated and not in a way that compliments the style. It is a simple and charming place though that has a lot of character.

Dear Guest,
We are pleased that you enjoyed the second room. Our idea is that a boutique hotel room is like a dress: not everyone likes the same style. At the same time we are confident that our product has been built following the ancient rules of Italian charming remarkable architecture. For example the huge king-size bed in the prestige suite you mentioned and that you didn't like have been recreated using an ancient technique of bedding thanks to artigians working nearby. Villa Campestri is an old country manor first built in the 1222 and then amplified during the centuries. My family restored the whole property with dedition and passion in order to create a pleasant environment for our Guest. Most of the time the dress fits perfectly, sometimes it doesn't. Why don't we try again? We would love to welcome you again in our house.

I stayed at Villa Campestri back in March for a total of 8 nights. The resort is a renovated 15th century villa full of charm and character. If you are loking for a quiet, relaxing place, Villa Campestri is the perfect location. The property is big, and the drive to the town of Vichio is only 5 minutes away. They have a beautifull pool that looks inviting, unfortunately it was too cold while I was there. The rooms are big, clean and nicely decorated. The breakfast is one of the best I have ever had in a hotel: fresh squeezed (do it yourself) blood orange juice, fresh eggs, nice cheeses. The restaurant also serves very good dinners and lunches as well. Their house red wine is delicious. The staff is very friendly, knowlegeble and helpful. Gemma, one of the owner's daughters even called Avis and helped change my rental car return for me when my flight changed!

The only downside to my stay is that there was no cellular reception or wireless internet in my room (#73?) due to the thick walls of the villa. However, the large common area upstairs was quiet and had great reception/wireless connection that was perfect for my needs. The downstairs reception area at the entrance was also very comfortable and made it easy to deal with my daily phone calls and emails.

Overall a wonderful place to stay with well-appointed rooms, great scenery/grounds, excellent food and extremely gracious people/staff. Highly recommended, and I most definitely plan on returning.

We were watching a friends' small dog for the weekend and still wanted to enjoy a little vacation. This place was perfect. Plenty of space to run and play. We enjoyed two of the trails, I believe it was about 1.5-2 hours of walking total. The views of the valley are quite nice. They have a swing set, small slide, pool, and bamboo hideout for the children. I would suggest taking your own towels for the pool. For the adults there are free mountain bikes. The food is simply delicious!!! I would recommend staying here only if you have your own car, as it is very remote. I've never traveled with a pet before so I don't know the "norm" but the hotel staff was extremely friendly to us & our pet! Thanks!

Room Tip: Room 66/67 is 1 queen bed & 3 twin beds in 3 separate rooms which would be nice for a family wit...

I was at this villa because a friend got married here. There were about 40 of us total in attendance at the wedding and I don't think anyone would have a single complaint. The service was above and beyond! Not only did the staff attend to the bride and groom, but they did everything they could to take care of each and every guest. The food was phenomenal, and the presentation just beautiful. I have severe food allergies and they took amazing care of me. There were a few times the group made last-minute requests and the team at Villa Campestri did everything to make it all happen. The 700+ year-old villa has so much charm. Some of the rooms are large with large bathrooms while others are a bit more cozy with smaller bathrooms. But, when you take into consideration the age of the property, you don't mind. Each floor in the villa has a center space which is like an over-sized living room. Our group spent a lot of time relaxing and socializing in these spaces. Depending where you were standing, you could access their free wi-fi. The property itself is glorious - rolling hills, an amazing view overlooking the city, beautiful gardens, delightful patio, generous-sized pool, and lounge chairs all over the property to rest on. There is a 5-minute walk to a waterfall and many trails/paths for other hikes. Several people in our party rented bikes from the villa as well. The only disadvantage to this location is that it is isolated from anything else. So, unless you have a car, be prepared to spend 20 euro per trip (the van holds many people) to/from the city (or train station). While breakfast is included in the rate, there is a fee for other meals at Campestri. So if you want to go off-site for a meal, factor in the shuttle service.

Room Tip: Ask the hotel which rooms are mini-suites, which are mini-apartments, etc.

One of the highlights of our recent trip to Italy with 18 life-long friends, arranged by Cornucopia Journeys (www.cornucopiajourneys.com), was the day we spent at Villa Campestri in Vicchio, north of Florence. The Medici-era villa, lovingly restored, is set on a hill overlooking Mugello, and the views are spectacular. Gemma oversees the olive oil operation and her sister, Viola, is responsible for the hospitality at the villa. Both are so welcoming and care deeply about their property and the experience you will have, as does their excellent staff. Gemma conducted a fascinating tour through the olive groves and the olive oil press operation, and then we proceeded to the Oleoteca for the olive oil tasting. What an education! Everyone was very impressed with her knowledge. The luncheon following, designed for us by Viola and their chef, was exceptional. The ingredients were all very much in season and sourced locally, and the chocolate lava cake made with olive oil at the end was their crowning achievement! It was a truly wonderful and memorable day. We very highly recommend Villa Campestri for any group or individual who is looking for an authentic olive oil experience in superb, peaceful surroundings.

We traveled to Villa Campestri with our rental car and three sons age 7 to 13. It was a bit tricky to find but well worth the beautiful drive up to the Villa. The room we had was very spacious for a family of five and we spent four nights there. Breakfast was fabulous as too was our evenings dining there. We drove to Florence but recommend taking a train in Vicchio in order to avoid the challenges of driving and parking. The towns in the valley were very nice and there are beautiful walks around the Villa. We look forward to going back!
